Hey Guys,

I'm travelling to New York City in October. I've been a bunch of times but always on business so never had to book myself and never ventured far out of Manhatten. This time I'm going with my girlfriend using my own wallet, so just wondered if you guys could give me some good, honest advice about where to stay on a budget. As I'll be with my other half, I don't want to stay in a skanky hotel or a dangerous area, but also don't want to spends thousands.

What are some good areas? Any suggestions for nice but affordable hotels? Is renting an apartment a better option? Easy access to all the usual tourist stuff would be good.

Any advice greatly appreciated.
