Random questions of the OT, PT and EU

1. When the 2004 OT re-release came about, there seemed to be many howls of dismay regarding the color corrections, higher saturation of colors and higher levels of contrast, I take it this is because it changed the original 'look' of the OT? Or would these changes be in favor in they were done with a more deft hand(as in not rushed in 30 days)?

2. I was looking over the RLM reviews and one of his points that stuck with me was how he noted that lightsabers became less special in the PT, being ignited all the time as well as a bunch of Jedi having them, as opposed to in the OT, where they were only ignited when needed, and at any given time, no more than two people were on screen using them.

I think he also complained about how the PT was too Jedi centric, compared to the OT, where you had a more even mix of 'normal' people, those without Force powers.

Anyway, upon further reflection, do you guys think this is a nitpick? This kind of thing seemed to be inevitable given that the PT was invariably going to be about the fall of the Jedi.

Certainly Lucas didn't have to go all lightsaber crazy at some points, like when Obi-wan ignites his lightsaber just to throw a tracking device on Jango's ship, but for everything else, I suppose it boils down down to personal preference, whether you wanted some broad based mythic Jedi focused story or a more personal grounded story that took place during this tumultuous time, or perhaps a combination of both.

3. I understand that their is a great deal of trepidation regarding the EU, primarily because of it's incessant need to connect everyone to everyone. Even so, how do you guys feel about many background characters having a name or story? I know that not all of the background guys have connections to other characters like they do in the EU novels, but do you guys like knowing their names and story or would you rather have them left unexplored?

Also, what's the general consensus on the Yuuzhan Vong? It seems they left a pretty big mark within the EU, and maybe I haven't been searching hard enough, but most fans these days seem to talk about the Jedi vs Sith aspects of the EU. The YV just seem to have faded into the background of the collective fandom's psyche.

I don't have a problem with the multiple lightsabers in the PT. What I do have a problem with is the chereography, the lack of colour variety, and how Yoda and Palpatine were forced into using them.

I generally don't have a problem with the EU assigning names and histories to the background characters. Some I like, some I don't. It's when major universe-shrinkage occurs that problems arise.

I liked the Yuuzhan Vong at first - their organic technology and apparent absence in the Force intrigued me - but as time went on I grew more and more disenchanted with them and their impact on the SW Universe. Frankly, I now feel the Yuuzhan Vong invasion should never have occured, and Luke, Leia, Han, and co. should have just lived happily ever after with their families and friends in relative peace and security following the events in the Hand of Thrawn novels.

That depends on which authors you read.  The EU is so vast that some of the story lines are completely separate.  As a non-prequel follower, I stick to stories that don't interact with anything prequel.

I had that same trepidation myself.  I thought the EU was so contaminated that it was unnavigable.  With some in-depth research and the input of this community, I found which novels to read and which ones to ignore.  I'll tolerate a very brief prequel mention, but only if it's a name-check, a date reference, or location.  Beyond that, the novel goes in the trash can.

RE the 2004 color: I don't see anything wrong with the original colors. Short of some continuity fixes in color, which they fixed in 1997 for the most part, they didn't need to mess with the colors at all. It doesn't make the movies look more modern. It makes them look blue.

Does the Thrawn Trilogy count as EU?  I read Heir to the Empire, and while I didn't think it was all that good (maily due to the writing style), I can close my eyes and imagine it as Episode VII.  The rest of the EU is way too convoluted for me.

RE: everyone has a backstory - this is a big part of why I hate the EU.  When Grievous was first introduced (via the excellent Tarkovsky Clone Wars cartoons), he didn't have an official backstory, which prompted interesting questons.  Who the hell was he?  Was he a droid who became self aware, and mated his frame with organic parts?  Are all the live parts from the same species, or is there some mix and match going on?  What's more in charge of his being - the machine or the organic?  As far as I'm concerned, he didn't need a backstory, but they later gave him one, which really just made him a lot less interesting.  Well, and then he got portrayed by Matthew Wood in the film, which made him stupid.

That’s impossible, even for a computer.

Yes. There isn't a SW novel/comic/game/etc. that has been elevated beyond "C-canon".

Man, this thread is all over the place. Seems like it could be merged with the General SW Discussion thread...
