It's always April 1st somewhere in the universe but never the less an Ubuntu (other flavours of Linux are available) start up disc and/or USB stick is a really handy thing to have around the house of anyone with a computer.

You can use it to sweep viruses, you can use it to retrieve data or restore a partition and other than the cost of the USB stick or disc it's better than kosher.

With power outages the drive killer isn't always the outage but surges when the power is restored so good surge protection is also a plus.

I'm pretty meticulous about back ups.  I have two 2xTB drives that are live for various work projects and storage.  Each is backed up to an identical 2xTB drive once a week give or take based on what I'm working on.  The back up drives are idle, not plugged into anything.  Surges are not an issue.  I've got everything on here, video files, all my family photos, all of my music, a lifetime of collecting music, my family projects like archiving my father's history in the Armed Air Forces in WW2 and his time as a POW (I still have about a foot of letters and documents to scan for that one!), wargame files (anyone on here know who Avalon Hill, SPI, Steve Jackson, et al are?).  All this stuff is too important to me to lose because a squirrel chewed through a power line & where I live we lose our power about once a week in summer.  There's some sort of junction or transformer about 1/4 a city block from us and we can literally hear it go right before we lose all power in our house.

I'd like to think this is all some elaborate April Fool's joke, whether or not it is someone out there can learn something from the conversation.  Back your stuff up and do it in a way that minimizes your opportunity of a "holy bats*** what  the hell just happened!?!?!!" incident.

We had quite a few outages during the gales either side of Christmas and in the cold snap the year before.

Unplugging the backup drives after use is a another good bit of stable door management.

Indeed. Here on the East Coast of the US, we've still got about three hours more of April 1st. The West Coast has got six more hours! Perhaps Ady took this into account when planning his April Fool's joke. The fact that it would be the same joke as last year would, I think, be to his advantage--who'd expect the same joke two years in a row?

To your earlier post, I love the USB boot sticks; it often saves the day. I've had Linux happily install on systems where Windows (XP, Vista and 7) insist there is not a HD, and Ubuntu will happily install fine and get everything working, and can then install Windows along side.

I have to say I've been impressed with just how tough hard-drives can be.... If you buy the right hard-drive, I wouldn't recommend cutting corners with computer hardware you get what you pay for. My entire laptop has survived a power outage, hard-drive was partly damaged, carried on working however, though slowly failed over time, until I replaced it. (Had to get a new transformer though, it took the brunt).

I have to recommend backing everything up. Personally I just clone my HD every month. Works beautifully, was seemless for me, just put the clone onto my new hard-drive and viola computer was exactly the same. Though was disappointed I couldn't get my external hard-drive to work though while I waited for the replacement. Power was cut to the USB ports during start up for some reason, which obviously then caused Windows start up to fail.

Seagate are who I recommend, ridiculously long guarantee's; I'd predict most people will of got a new computer before the guarantee runs out.

I thought last year's joke was Ady getting banned from OT.com after a huge argument with Jay?

Relax guys. I clearly remember Ady saying that after he'd gone through a similar situation on ANH:R he started backing everything up very regularly. I thing he even said he backs it all up twice, but don't quote me on that.

Yeah, that was the reason I though it would be a April Fools, would of thought someone as meticulous as Ady would of backed up...

Another update from Ady on Facebook:

Just got the new 3Tb drive and i tried the freezer trick with the old one and my PC will now read it. So i'm recovering all the files right now. Fingers crossed

I  thought the freezer trick was a myth (like the urethra trick only less uncomfortable).

The freezer trick does work, I myself have tried it before and it worked, but you have to be very quick with it.

Nah, it works, as I understand it, because freezing makes the hard-disk go back to it's original form and strengthens it so if it has become bent or warped, it will fix it for as long as it's frozen. But as it thaws, the hard disk becomes less stable, this can mean you have to freeze it a couple of times to rescue all the data.

As I said earlier, two drives I had been unable to do anything with, I managed to retrieve all the data after freezing, one was only small 60 GB so managed to get all the data off in one, the other took three goes.

What's the urethra trick? Can't say I've heard of that.

On a related note, I have to say get a hybrid hard-drive (it has a small solid state cached drive, and a much larger standard drive). I've found them to both be far more reliable (than both solid state and normal), quieter and use less power than standard drives; none of the hybrid's I've installed have I yet to see fail.

Well you take the hard disc and you shove i... (on second thoughts just... assume it doesn't work).

It works by making the drive good and stiff ;-)

The latest from Ady yet again (I'm not a facebook stalker, I swear!):

I've had to do it in sections as it keeps dying. So far there is just over 20 damaged/ unrecoverable files

OMG please tell me this is just a prank lol! :p

If it is a prank, it seems like Ady's not gonna tell us. It's a little convenient that he's already recovered all but 20 files, haha.

If it's NOT a prank, it's awesome that he's recovered all but 20 files.

Either way, Ady wins, haha

You know me, I'm usually in on these sorts of things. He swore to me yesterday that it wasn't a joke, though I didn't believe him until this morning.

Produced by Cock Sure Industries?

On topic: still not sure if it's a prank or not, if it's good that he's managed to pretty much get everything back. The file undelete's may well manage to retrieve things to. If you have lots of time on your hands you can just have them keep trying to read until they manage to. When I was cloning my failed hard-drive it would just keep trying to read until it did succesfully; could take 2-3 days, but would eventually do it. (The whole clone took that long, not an individual file retrieval).

Latest:

well i can only work on the video editing side of things for the next couple of weeks because the housing association that i rent my flat from have just started work on putting in a whole new bathroom, so i am without power/ water for a lot of time while they are doing this work. This means i can't continue working on the models/ miniatures, not only because of this, but also because of all the dust, which is not good when working with silicone, resin or paints. I need to be able to work in the daytime so this work being done has stopped this for the moment. We're still looking at a summer release, but which month at the moment is anyone's guess. The 720p mkv will be the first version released with the blu-ray/ DVDs coming sometime after because of all the work that has to be done to create them (menus, special features etc)

Still set for Summer 2012

I still think it's an extended prank. April, May, June, July and August fools.

Didn't last years prank last a few days?

I once spent weeks editing a few hours worth of footage and then had my hard drive crash.  I was smart and had saved all the video data on a separate drive.  I wasn't so smart in that I didn't backup the actual edit files.

So I had to start all over.

Dumb.
