Yeah, try Vimeo. They're very lenient with copyrighted material.
Speaking of videos, I have a new one up.
Enjoy!
Avatar, your vid is already down. Try Vimeo and try not to use any SW related terms when naming it. They aren't nearly as gestapo-esque when taking down supposedly copywrited material.
If once you start down the dark path… wear comfortable shoes.

Looks great Aalenfae, only suggestion, which I couldn't hear, but personally I'd say keep the "let him go line" from one of the Storm troopers. I liked the nod to the OT music as well. Though I'd say in the whole movie probably blend between the two; with the OT being used to show the coming of the Empire... If you haven't I would definitely suggest using the Imperial march for Vader's assault on the Temple.
"Love is the only reality and it is not a mere sentiment. It is the ultimate truth that lies at the heart of creation." - Rabindranath Tagore
"Many a doctrine is like a window pane. We see truth through it but it divides us from truth." - Kahlil Gibran
I know the sound is temporary (the vision is top drawer).
But I had to point out that the cue at the end is associated with the stormtroppers so it creates a very wierd effect of painting Bail out to be some kind of Imperial heavy.
Great work, as always.
Is there anyway of stabilizing the stearing wheel when Bail jumps into the cockpit? The way he knocks it with his knee has always bothered me.
Spoiler free for the ST
Ah, the OT music feels great in the Bail video! (though I agree with Bingowings about the cue for Bail's ship - What if you had the previous music fade out during take off, musical silence while Bail says his line about warning the Jedi about the trap, and then have the Imperial cue begin just before the wipe to the Clone Troopers on Utapau?)
Were you still planning on doing the Clone Trooper helmet replacement in the Obi-Wan scene? (was that you or another editor looking to do that?)
On the newer takeoff comparison video, I personally would prefer the closer take - if there wasn't a "camera shake". I understand it's because of the camera pan and zoom from the original shot so if it can't be smoother, my opinion would be to stick with the original. You have an earlier video where you show you were taking some of the shake out (thank you!) so it would suck to have to put some in.
Great work! So very much looking forward to this! Thank you!
I've since re-cut that scene, and the musical cues are a little more in the "spirit" of the characters now. The music transitions are also cleaner now.
Thanks for pointing that out!
(I don't think I can stabilize the wheel without things looking awkward. But either way, RotS lacks a lot of physical interaction with sets, so even if I could fix a goof like that, I'd probably keep it. Just to retain as much of the "realness" of the movie as possible - it really needs that real feeling.)
I'm still looking to change the helmet, yes. But I'm not sure if I'M going to do it. I might get a more professional 3D guy to do that for me.
As far as the camera shake is concerned, the idea was to make the shot look like something that was actually filmed in real life - where the camera man would be hanging out of a helicopter. In the original, it's much too smooth to look like it's real.
I've only removed camera shake from scenes where camera shake is inappropriate. Because in real life, the camera does indeed shake at times. Just not nearly as much as it does in RotS, where most of the camera shake is added digitally for "action" purposes, and not realism.

Makes sense, I didn't know you were going for that effect :)
I was trying to imagine what that scene would have looked like in the OT and I pictured a smooth shot as the fly by occurs. (Probably even showing the rear of the ship after it passes the camera - but that obviously isn't there in the original Ep 3 scene - I'm sure the OT guru's here can correct me if I'm wrong)
I wasn't a fan of the "modern" camera movements in the PT personally - like the sudden zooming in the action sequences. I think those kind of shots can be great in certain movies, but didn't feel right in Star Wars.
Just wanted to give some constructive criticism if you're going for an OT feel; do what you think is best though! It's shaping up to be great!
You're right - in the OT, the shot would be very steady. But in the OT (and Phantom Menace, if we're going to be truthful), the shots were mainly done with models - which, by nature, already looked real.
Almost everything in RotS is CGI. And even though we have a relatively smooth shot like we might see in the OT, everything looks fake. The only way to make it look LESS fake is to make the shot appear as though it was filmed on-location. In order to do that, I added the wobbly camera effect.Though I'll go back and forth and see if it's really needed so severely.
The best option would be to entirely re-composite the shot with actual models, but that's far from feasible, haha.
here is the death star fire redone
i hope when adywan returns he will add the middle laser beam cause it looks a bit awkward after seeing it again in rotj
i also tried to redo luke saber but the last part started feeling a bit wobbly
also brightened up the the room and removed the blue tint though i might have overdone it a bit
Wrong thread? Or am I missing something? :p
He was just responding to another video on my vimeo channel, is all.
(Avatar, that's good work for a start. Now you can try adding more motion to the layers - remember that the original had all those pulses)
Speaking of after effects and stuff like that, I've just been looking through my project folders and realizing that I've gotten a lot better at After Effects than when I started, and a lot of my work is already beginning to look dated. I'm probably going to have to go through everything I've already done and start revising.

Definitely agreed there! ha That's something I love about the Lord of the Rings trilogy was Jackson's extensive use of miniatures.
I wonder if roto'ing any of the A New Hope footage would be a good replacement for that shot? Just an idea if you wanted to tackle the extra work for such a small payoff... In my opinion, what you have already done is good enough for that small, not-super-important shot.
It's easy to make suggestions when I'm not the one that is doing the work ;)
Even now (let alone 7 years ago), CGI doesn't look real. At least not for things that aren't real, if you know what I mean. Something really commonplace might actually look more real in CGI because we're trained not to pay attention to natural details. Something like a massive city-world with a huge dome building and a spaceship will look fake unless it's real - like a model.
I don't think A New Hope would work for me. They don't really have any usable angles of the Blockade Runner.
But in the end, yes. It is a pretty insignificant shot.

Just gonna put this here
We got him R2... haha
Make that the alternate ending instead of the Mustafar battle... ;P
That was good fun!
Haha, thanks. I'm considering including stupid scenes like this into my DVD release - just for fun. I have all these cut scenes, and I don't want them to go to waste, haha.

Alright, after a bit of a break, I'm finally back to editing. Here's what I'm currently up to these days
Ohh nice.
Is there a way of timing the comm chatter so that instead of ending when the Jedi enter frame it ends when they come over the lip of the cruiser?
That way the audience will be wondering what's going on and then see the battle.
Fantastic! I love what you've done, and relatively little is actual visual editing! The sounds give it such a greater SW feel! Almost allows me to forvige you for wanting to work on anything but ROTJ ;)
It's a shame that there's no tightly focused shots of individual ship explosions/internal cockpits as these would sell the OTish comm chatter a lot better than the fake as hell CG-wankery we have at the moment.
The only shots we have look fake as hell and so do the pilots. Way to showcase your terrible cgi, George.
@ Bingowings
I actually originally had it timed that way, but the audio and music at that point are really loud, and a lot of the effect was lost in the end. It just sounded like more noise at that point.
@darth_ender
Thanks for understanding! Haha.
@brash_stryker
Yeah, it's a huge shame. I would do almost anything to have more cockpit shots of clone troopers.
Maybe I can find a TIE fighter helmet, repaint it with republic colors, and film some more cockpit shots on a greenscreen. That way I can avoid having to use Morrison's face.
You could kill the sound and then bring it up as the chatter cuts off.
Like someone coming back to consciousness after being hit on the head by a falling cocktail shaker... again.
