why was there so much compression in that shot?

I've been working with individual colour channels to build up detail in each one. The red channel highlights clip a lot, the blue channel too but not quite so much and the green channel rarely clips. It's not often that you have clipping in all three channels simultaneously so there is usually good detail in at least one channel. The green channel is often useless because the white point is so much lower than the other channels but it can be used as a 'base' to restore some detail in combination with the blue channel which contains most of the highlight detail.

I've used 4 keys just in the red channel alone to build up the red highlight detail as well as using difference mattes to limit the areas which are being altered.

So basically I started with three precomps - one each for the red, green and blue channels, worked on building the detail in each using colour and luma keys, then used 'set channels' in a fourth precomp to set each of them as new R/G/B channels. This then becomes your new video layer.

Scanned through the thread and came across this. I've been thinking of using multiple separations for various reconstructions (the data is there, we just have to know where to look ... to paraphrase The X Files) and your idea here is brilliant. Two thumbs up!

Look out for a dedicated thread in a couple of days.

Impressive! And looking forward to it, as I'm sure it will be an awesome technical resource on the OT forum.

Harmy (and crew) is doing a great job with spectacular results on his "despecialization" v.1 & v.2. But despecialization is not only restoring missing shots and removing new shots & shot-elements -- although that is a big and obvious part. Whether by sloppiness-commanded or sloppiness-approved, George Lucas has ruined the Star Wars picture, generally, in his post-production "specialization", with the blown out hi-lights, the crushed shadows, and the shifted colors ... even in isolated color-layers ... as a side-effect of his company's incompetent toying with "grading". (Side note: this seems to be an industry fetish now-a-days, as many different forum postings have attested to -- Star Wars, The Lord Of The Rings, et al.)

Although it may not be in mind for this project (didn't Harmy also do a "partial-despecialization" once?), "full-despecialization" would include these corrections. Hopefully it will be included ... maybe in v.3? ;)

@snicker: I'm really looking forward to your thread! I wanna know how you "faked" the detail in the clipped shadow areas.

Harmy,

In my typical delayed fashion, I finally got around to checking out Reels 3 and 4 of WP3. Everything's looking very good! Some of the shots inside the cantina seemed overly warm, but I'll trust your references.

My usual laptop must be dying on me, because I had to switch to the wife's to watch these 2 files. Not even the latest version of VLC Player helped my old laptop.

The latest build of VLC doesn't seem to handle 720p video files on my underpowered laptop, either. Switched over to PotPlayer to view it. Plays it fine, better than anything else I have, but the interface is not exactly to my liking. Does the job, though, I guess.

@ Erikstormtrooper: Try with "Media Player Classic," by far is the best option for HD playback in a PC ;-)

Harmy is working from my list and has contributed many things to it. I wouldn't worry about him missing something.

Does anyone know where I can get .srt subtitles for these?

I just need English. I saw that thread and...maybe I'm just being stupid, but I don't see anything in there that looks like a link. Where can I get the actual subtitle files from?

PM sent.  Any other questions about it should go in the other thread, as it's not directly related to this project.

Believe it or not, PotPlayer actually worked for me, although the aspect ratio is a little off. Thanks!

I've tried Media Player Classic - Home Cinema version 1.6.0.4014, but the video playback it too slow and gets quickly out of sync with the audio.

I got one question. Does the Despsecialized Edition movies sync with the GOUT audio. I'd like to take the Despecialized Edition and apply the french soundtrack but need to know if there will be some tweaking necessary and if so, how much.

Thanks

From what I remember they sync perfectly.  I am sure someone else can confirm for certain though.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure someone in this thread said that any GOUT-synced audio mix is also synced to this version.  Makes sense, these projects all need some reference point if they're to be used together, and GOUT is about as official as it's gonna get for the OT.

I'm sure Harmy is busy with school, but I hope he has that next reel ready, can't wait to see it!

@c0ss3tt3: I think all three Despecialized Editions are timed to the GOUT. They're in 23,976fps though, so if your soundtrack comes from a PAL DVD you'll have to convert it from 25fps to 23,976 and hopefully it'll work.

Harmy, you should register you fan edit at FanEdit.org. I'm sure that you would win "fan edit of the year".

Only that it's not a fanedit... no editorial changes will be made to the movie ;)
