PROMETHEUS was (Alien 0?) NOW NO LONGER SPOILER FREE. — Page 9

Again, the Nostromo is a space semi truck that looks like it was made before any of the crew from Alien were born.  The Prometheus is an extremely heavily-funded scientific research vessel.  Of course it's going to have better technology.

Like 005 said, the Nostromo is probably older than the Prometheus, too.

This is an explanation I can get behind. It's the "get over it, it's a 2012 movie, they can't have CRT monitors in it" attitude that bothers me, as if a reason is not required.

The only problem I have with that excuse/reasoning is that it still leaves quite an unbelievable technological discrepancy between the ships.  By that same logic, if I were to compare a garbage truck built in 1960 to a 2012 Rolls Royce, there should be a dramatic difference in technology.  Sure, there would be advancements and refinements made in that time gap, but the the basic technology would still be the same.  The Rolls Royce may look/handle/feel nicer, but both vehicles would have a windshield, steering wheel, tires, drive shaft, etc.

I would completely buy into the Prometheus' tech if it were comparable to that of the Nostromo's -- say, LCD or OLED flat screens with touch-sensitive controls -- but 3D holographic projections?  Not even the same universe as Alien as far as I'm concerned.  The only way a gap like that would be plausible in my mind would be if the Nostromo and the Prometheus were made over a century apart or if the latter was built with alien technology.  I doubt a century-old ship would still be in service, and there's nothing to suggest that the Prometheus is anything but a man-made vessel.

Like Asterisk8 said, I'm still eager to see this film, and will judge it on its own merits, but aesthetically I really do wish it were more in line with Alien.

I will feel pretty disappointed if Michael Fassbender is not filled with spaghetti.

Didn't Ridley say in an interview that when he was making alien he wanted screens that "we're wafer thin, and would just float there" and continues with something like "of course today we have stuff just like that, but we couldn't do it then"? Or maybe that's just what he imagined would happen. Not sure, i think it's on the collectors dvd. He's smoking a big cigar in the interview, i know that much.

Sir Ridley and Fassbender mentioned Pastafarianism and the FSM in some interviews. Count on spaghetti.

Hopefully, for some sort of anniversary edition, Scott will go back to the Alien negative and cut out all the shots of computer screens on the flight deck, Mother etc, and replace them with shots featuring floating flatscreens and then throw the excised negative in the rubbish.

While he's at it, he can add a lens flare to every shot, have Ash fart periodically for comedic effect, and have a CGI xenomorph pass in front of the camera during Kane's chest bursting scene.

I agree fully.

For me personally, that sort of difference is a deal-breaker.  I don't make myself struggle with inconsistencies like that.  In light of these new trailers and seeing the film's visuals more clearly now, this is most likely a movie I won't bother with.

Alien has been one of my Top Five for 33 years.  The derelict ship and the space jockey have been a mystery since the beginning.  I can go the distance without ever giving it another thought. Particularly since I've never given it any thought in the past.   Probably better anyway.  Nothing to unsee or try to reconcile.

Heck, that's a philosophy I use in daily life.

Just a few minutes ago I was hit in the face by a cocktail shaker I don't remember ever buying or using.

Ironically, if not for the the connection to Alien, a connection the writers seem to want to downplay a bit, y'all might be more willing to see this as just a really good sci-fi movie

assuming it's really good, of course.

Yes, true. If it's a great sci-fi movie, it won't matter all that much to me. It only matters right now because it's the only thing to really talk about. The fancy Avatar displays sapped just a little of my excitement because I was banking on the fact that Ridley Scott would manage to make old, bulky technology look sexy. It worked so well in Moon.

Really, I just want to see a science fiction film from Ridley Scott that's as good as Blade Runner and Alien. That's about story and mood, so we'll see.

I was excited when I heard Ridley was coming back to sci-fi. The Alien connections are just icing on the cake. Totally awesome icing.

SPOILERS! (MAYBE)

I am also bothered by the sleeker look of the tech, but it is not a deal breaker for me (I think).

I am also bothered by the fact that the space jockey creatures look like humans and that what we thought were their faces are actually masks/helmets!

I have this conversation ever so often with humans that I meet.

You seem to miss the possibility that you look like aliens and not that aliens look like you and that there may be a very good reason for it.

Like... just a guess but... maybe humans were genetically influenced so that eventually they would be compatible with the suits.

For all you know the universe could be teeming with planets of super-sentient clothing just waiting for stupid humanoids to wear them and so they can explore the cosmos.

If what I'm typing sounds like nonsense I can't help you there, it's all in your jeans.

It was kind of sad to watch all the excitement and build up in this thread, then to see it all deflate with that last trailer.

My excitement for it fell through the floor as well, but I am still going to go see it opening week. I rarely ever make it to the cinema, or deem films worth wasting money on the ticket price, and this is the first movie I have been somewhat excited about for a while now. Not to mentioned the director made two of my all time favorite movies.

I am not expecting much, but I'll give it a shot.

The points about Duncan Jones' Moon looking sexy and elegant with its clunky and modest technology is well made. Modern Sci-fi movies tend to jam pack the frame with way too much stuff simply because technology permits and they can. The prequels and J. J. Trek are great examples of this. Unfortunately, it looks like Prometheus is following suite. Not sure we should have expected it not to. Scott was brilliant and a bit on the edge at one point, but by now he is pretty mainstream and run of the mill. I'd love for this film to be a comeback, but there is really no reason to expect it will be.

I saw the trailer in front of John Carter tonight. Do the holographic displays appear on the ship? I only saw them in what looked like an earthbound scene.

Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I got a 1979 chill down my spine from seeing it.

Where were you in '77?

Its the golden era of the Earth like the golden era of a certain republic far, far away. Thats why its all new, shiny and high tech. Pretty basic stuff people. As for a new sci-fi movie thats not connected to Alien that would indeed be great but lets face it without Alien connection (as much as they want to downplay it) Ridley has nothing and he knows it. At least will get some Giger environments on film....I mean video. I guess we can hope to be pleasantly surprised but I have a bad feeling about this.
