The traitorous Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi, recently removed from command when the Jedi plot to overthrow the government was revealed, has murdered General Anakin Skywalker and Senator Padme Amidala of Naboo while escaping arrest. A period of mourning has been declared on Naboo, and Emperor Palpatine, himself a native of Naboo, has issued a statement expressing his sorrow at losing two of his closest friends. The killer's whereabouts are still unknown, but he will be brought to justice.

So yeah, probably because he was officially dead.
