According to my ISP I'm a resident of the largest city in Scotland and not practically in the middle of nowhere with a good corner shop.
News ahoy. Six strikes, and you lose your internet. Interesting that it doesn't say which ISPs are going through with this process.
edit: CNET article that does say what ISPs will.
A Goon in a Gaggle of 'em
Ugh I need to set up a VPN or something. Have no idea how to go about doing it.
Anybody have some good tips for simply changing proxy settings to avoid my ISP tracking me like this?
“Grow up. These are my Disney's movies, not yours.”
Obviously ISPs have the ability to look at our surfing habits - but it should be prohibited by law, with the usual necessary and reasonable exceptions.
Imagine phone companies cutting off phone service if they got wind of the fact that we were calling a known drug dealer. Like phone companies, the ISP should do no more than blindly connect us to the ip address we 'call.' We do not need a 'friendly' notice that we should stop contacting a certain kind of person. Additionally, ISPs are not competent to decide whether material falls under fair use. ISPs should assume that our access is permissible. If a rights holder wants to file suit or the government wants to prosecute, that's the responsibility of those parties. The ISPs must be afraid of being sued themselves.
The blue elephant in the room.

If you are worried about getting in trouble for downloading something, the easiest thing is to only use private torrent sites (and demonoid is not a private tracker).
If you want a Myspleen invite, just PM me and ask.

I'm not trying to advertise the spleen and we're certainly not ina competition with Demonoid. I doubt anyone would get in trouble using newsgroups or rapidshare.
But if you are getting in trouble for downloading things that are not SW/FE related then I would recommend using private trackers (there are hundreds and hundreds of them). I don't just use myspleen, I also regularly use 8-10 other trackers.
