I guessed it really early on but I'm a bit of nuisance in that regard.

It's the main reason I've never bothered to watch The Sixth Sense.

I needed some wars in space. So I picked a Star Wars at random-the Technidisc transfer.

I love the colors on this transfer. I know they're not always accurate and that in some scenes they fluctuate, but they sure look nice to my eyes. And no DVNR rearing it's ugly head.

Plus I got to break in my 16:9 monitor. :)

Clash of the Titans (1981)

Decent enough movie, even though the characters are kind of iffy, the picture is murky in many scenes, the stop-motion animation isn't composited into the film very well, and every bluescreen shot of Poesidon releasing the Kraken looks downright shitty. 5/10

Attended an advanced screening of this tonight. Hilarious and I'm not just saying that as a Hispanic. =P

Event Horizon (1997) - 6/10

The Screaming Skull (1958)

God, this has to be the most underrated movie I've ever seen. Seriously, I can't believe this film has a rating of 3.0 on IMDb; there must be far too many borderline retards on that site. This movie is a solid 5/10 at worst.

Le Manoir du Diable AKA The Haunted Castle (1896) - 5/10

Source Code (2011)

Even after hearing good reviews from people, I was still surprised at how good this was. Duncan Jones is doing really good in the feature film department so far. It felt very much like a good old fashioned 70s-esque thriller. It also reminds me of the TV show 'Seven Days'.

I also really liked the score for this film. So great.

Seven Samurai (1954)

My cousin had never seen a Kurosawa film - I've seen probably 20 - so we went and got sushi from my favorite place and then settled in for a 3 1/2 hour epic. He loved it. This was my fifth time through, and as if I needed any reminder, it really is my favorite film of all time.

A Fistful of Dollars

As much as I adore Kurosawa, as much as I love Yojimbo and think it is a great film-this is better.

It isn't a copy, rip-off, plagiarism...it is a remake that the Italian studio did not get the proper authorization to make.

But god, the atmosphere! This was the big spark that forever changed the Western and took it out of tired cliche. You can feel the ambiance of the arid desert landscape in your bones. The little details just are incredible and make this extremely limited production actually breathe in front of you.

It is incredible to see Sergio Leone so completely in control of his style at this stage in his career.

I've seen this countless times and it is a fast, swift, grainy, dirty, vibrant little masterwork. The 35mm print from MGM is stunning to see firsthand. The new Blu-ray looks okay via reviews, but I want to import the Italian one someday.

Classic in every sense-the Morricone score, Eastwood's first turn as the "nameless" poncho wearer, the villains, the cinematography, the landscape, the taut storyline, the one liners...just phenomenal. The magic lies in it's almost serial-like feel.

4 iron plated balls out of 4 ponchos.

The Birth of a Nation 6/10

This film is really overrated. I'll break down the movie into it's two parts.

Part 1 (Civil War):

Pros - Innoffensive

Cons - Boring, uninteresting, and way too long

Part 2 (Reconstruction):

Pros - Less boring and a little more interesting

Cons - REALLY racist, historically inaccurate, and way too long

What we're left with is a bad movie. The point it makes is extremely ignorant and stupid, and was so even when it was released. I understand and could clearly see, however, the film's innovation in cinematography, plot, and editing, and, well, that's really the only reason why I'm giving it a 6.

The second half is beyond very incorrect, yes. If they had actually had adapted The Clansman  upon which the film is based, this could have been avoided. However the notion that this is a bad film is ludicrous. It is the foundation of both feature narrative filmmaking and the industry itself. Watching Birth of a Nation is like watching the movies discover their identity.

Time after Time (1979)

Rather decent, well made. Although, some of the special effects are quite dated.

There were a few things that bugged me about the film due to the fact that I'm fairly well read on the invention of modern devices during the victorian era Luckily most of my pet peeves occurred during the opening few minutes of the film, in Victorian London. I shall list them thusly:

Why would H.G Wells import a lightbulb all the way from America, when The Swan Electric Lamp Company, founded by one of key creators of the lightbulb Joseph Swan, had already commerciallised the device and was selling it to prospective custommers by 1881? It would've been a lot cheaper for Mr Wells to have purchased it in Britain rather than having to ship one all the way from the United States.

And why call Edison a 'modern prometheus' as well?? It was well established at the time that both Edision and Swan had both independantly created the lightbulb at similar times. Wells would've been more likely to have had a lightbulb made by Swan's company than Edison's. Plus Joseph Swan had an AWESOME BEARD, whereas Edison (apparently) did not.

I liked Wells little speech about how "the first man to throw a blow is the first man who's run out of ideas."

Overall,  I quite enjoyed it.

Okay, I'll clear up what I said. I have an immense appreciation for Birth of a Nation's innovation, and that's why I gave it a 6 (which is not bad).

However, the story is boring, uninteresting and offensive; and the pacing is far too slow.

The film is not badly made, it's just kind of bad.

Again, I'm all for giving an innovative film its due, but there are some people who call the picture a masterpiece and I think that's just ridiculous. The plot is a definite flaw. Again, I also understand the innovation in cinematic plot structure, but that's not everything.

Just my thoughts.

The Towering Inferno (1974)

Decided to watch this on a whim and was taken aback. I had no idea this film had such a star studded cast. Paul Newman & Steve McQueen!?! Not to mention Fred Astaire which was a real surprise(oh and OJ Simpson too). Not only did it have a great cast it was also a great film in general. It still holds up today and is a real thrill.

An old abandoned hospital is investigated by a reality television team of paranormal investigators.

This is the plot for Grave Encounters (2011), a not bad entry into the shaky cam/found footage subgenre. It has a few moments of interest but most of the time it's like watching the boring corridor investigations from a Silent Hill game with people saying WTF every two seconds.

The characters are well drawn at the beginning as likable cheap media jerks but all notions of characterisation are thrown out of the window when the inevitable begins to happen.

REC it is not but it's more entertaining than Paranormal Inactivity.

If only this could really happen to Derek Acorah.

2 Orbitoclasts.

The above plot description is the same for Episode 50 (also 2011).

This one only flirts with the shaky cam from time to time.

It has some gleefully awful performances in it.

Not quite up to the standards of The Room (2003) it's not quite bad enough to be so bad it's good but with a bit more effort it could have made it.

As it's probable that the film makers are the sort of people who might read this my advice is re-edit the film, make the most of the awfulness.

Ramp it up to the point of parody and you could have a hit on re-release.

If Paranormal Activity can be fluffed into a hit this almost awful film could be made into a work of trashy fun you could really be proud of.

Impossible to grade this one as it's either a bad film on the verge of great awfulness or an okayish film that's gone a bit amateur hour.

I've heard of it...is that the one with that guy who played Indiana Jones?

I think I saw the Director's cut a few years ago.

Watched Real Steel yesterday. Wasn't impressed at all. with all the product placement it just felt like an infomercial.

they could have at least focused more on the spectacle of robots boxing or at least the father / son storyline.

Wind Chill (2007)

It had some creepy scenes, but overall wasn't very scary, and the ending is pure pants. However, the performance and interaction between the leads saves this film from being typical modern horror dreck. 5/10

Manhunter (1986)

This film has better atmosphere than Red Dragon, William Petersen is a better Will Graham than Ed Norton, and the shotout at the end of the film is fairly entertaining. On the other hand, Tom Noonan - while wonderfully creepy - doesn't bring as much pathos to the role of Francis Dollarhyde as Ralph Fiennes did, and the movie overall is rather tedious and boring. 5/10
