negative1 has mentioned on more than one occassion that any screengrabs that are posted here might be temporary in terms of colour timing or suffer from compression. Don't worry - I'd say he definitely knows what he's doing.

Besides, as has been mentioned several times here (and other places), the GOUT DVDs can't really be used as accurate references for colour timing. Sure, the crushed blacks (and other issues) of the '04 DVDs and the Blu-rays are over the top, but it's important to note that "Star Wars" wasn't always pretty or consistent. Check out this article for more info on that.

Yeah at this point torrents are a better deal. These file lockers for free users are becoming worse.

OK, guys. As some of you know I'm a university student and my major is English. Now, in order to finish my studies, I have to write a 30 - 40 page thesis.  I should have been working on this for ages but being the stupid lazy slob that I am, I kept neglecting it, as well as my other school stuff and procrastinated by working on my edits. Actually, I was hoping to have the edit done by now, so I could take a break from editing and work on it but it didn't exactly work out. Now I'm going to need your help to get this done as quickly as possible, because the deadline is getting dangerously close, which I didn't realize (I thought the deadline was a month later than it actually is) so I'm gonna have to stop working on the edit (or at least slow down quite a bit) until I'm done with the thesis.

Why I think you can help is because I was lucky enough to be able to choose STAR WARS as my topic (under the subject of "American Cutural Studies.") My topic is something along the lines of "STAR WARS, American Cultural Heritage."

I'd like to analyse what it it is that makes STAR WARS such a great cultural phenomenon and underline its importance as an American cultural landmark.

It's a little absurd that they want us to show critical thinking in the work but at the same time we have to back every single idea with a citation, so I need sources, lots of them. I turn to you because I know this place is an incredible well of knowledge on this subject and there are people here who can point me to the exact right places. I need quotations from documentaries, film historians, academic books etc.

The thing is, I need the exact places, it's like I've read The Secret History of Star Wars (and it was awesome too) but if I was to find some quote in there, I'd be quite lost.

I started a thread here, so if you can help, please post there but keep any discussion about the edit here, I need that thread to stay on topic.

Thank you!

Help me, OT.com, you're my only hope!

I never felt tempted to download the other reels because I wanted to wait for the finished product, but I saw your last link and I couldn't help the temptation and went ahead and downloaded it.

Wow. It's one thing to see it in pictures and it's another to see it in motion. Like others have said, the color timing is retro-tastic. You really feel like you're watching a film from the 70s. Great job on that front.

I just skimmed through it, and it's late here so I am going to hit the hay, but I'll give more detailed criticisms if I can find any.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

I do not know where your going but in hi school I did a paper on the story of Star Wars and Joseph Campbell’s books helped a lot.

You are really out doing yourself harmy, great job. Looks wonderful!

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

The color and detail is just fantastic.  I'm noticing things I've never noticed before and that amazes me! Absolutely can't wait to see the finished product.

I'm just loving the fact that I'm even able to notice grain on Star Wars.  On Star Wars!  Zero complaints with the newest workprint.

Harmy, this is looking unbelievably good. I haven't been through the whole workprint but I noticed something that really stood out It's a shot that I know you've laboured over (and over) so I hate to point it out. In the first shot of the cantina Dewback starting at 00:41:50:17 there's a patch of what looks like blurred compression artifacts or large grain above the Dewback's head. Because it doesn't move it really stands out. The green grain in there also stands out unlike the green grain patch on the left which looks inherent. Could you render those few frames and patch heal that area in Photoshop? Alternatively you could mask it in Premiere and apply a bit of noise with a little blur. I gotta say, being able to watch the Mos Eisley sequence without the CGI additions is a wonderful thing and a shitload of work.

Just want to add that the other Dewback shots are perfectly integrated. Had a quick skim through the rest of the workprint and couldn't see anything else that stood out as a fix. You've really nailed the colours too.

Hey Harmy, I'd like to point something out.  During the scene where R2 and 3PO are hiding behind the door and the stormtroopers are inspecting the area, part of the background warps a little.  I'm guessing that this was due to removing the flying probe droid or whatever the hell that thing is and using GOUT footage to try and mask part of it.

But aside from that and the establishing shot of the cantina that somebody already pointed out, everything seems to look great, and I haven't found any other problems yet.  I was quite surprised by the green tint in the scene where Vader and Tarkin discuss how extract info from Leia, but if that's how it's supposed to look, that's how it's supposed to look.

Oh and one more thing, did you do something different to the shot where the Falcon takes off and the troopers watch it ascend?

"Oh, don't sell yourself short Judge, you're a tremendous slouch."

Yeah, I'm aware of all of the problems you guys pointed out, I'm gonna be able to fix some, but some will have to stay the way they are (the shaky background in the "door is locked" shot for example).

And yeah, I made the look and compositing of Falcon in the shot of it leaving Mos Eisley closer to the original.

Stunning work Harmy, cannot wait to download and watch the whole thing!

I'm sure that this shot was like this in the original, but it just looks really out of place.

The scenes before and after it, the sky is a nice blue, but this closeup it is very red.  If it was supposed to be like that as per the original, that's fine by me, just is a bit off to me.

Yes, it IS correct - this scene always had red sky

 here's our slightly brightened version:

Hi everyone,

Regarding the above screenshots, personally I think the despecialized one looks better than the slightly brightened up, because skin tones are more natural, Luke's robe is white and C3PO color also looks better (more golden than yellow).

Oh, I don't know if it's worth mentioning, but since this is the purpose of the workprint after all (to evaluate progress), I've noticed some things in the reel 3 (the only one I've downloaded so far):

1) Sound seems a little bit distorted, as if volume was a tad too high, but this can be due to mp4 compression or my codecs/player fault (I use MPC-HC);

2) I don't know if it has always been like that (and probably it WAS, due to Special FX technical limitations of the era the film was made), but at 00:56:18:23 and 00:56:58:18 (Luke's saber going off and on) it felt to me like there was a jump cut /missing frame;

3) I've noticed some compression artifacts near C3PO's arms (00:40:41:22) and head (00:40:54:10) - I think they're called 'mosquito noise'?

Hammy, I know it's been said 1000 times already, but your work is simply put FANTASTIC.  Thank you!!!!

Is there any way to reduce the shakiness like you did with the dewback shots?
