Good luck with that. Seriously, that print looks good enough that I'd settle for a camcorder pointed at the screen. :)

Just make sure you use the correct tungsten-halogen light source (don't all 8mm projectors use that?), or the image will come out blue like on the frame scans.

I've tried the camcorder pointed at the wall thing before. Flickers like hell. ;)

As I posted in the memorabilia subforum, I'm going for this print. Luckily, my birthday was very recent, and I received a good sum of money. Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to bid. I don't think I have transfer equipment that's nearly as good as Puggo's, but at least I've got one of these types of things:

Hopefully, the quality will be beyond decent. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it, though.

Now you tell me. ;)

Well said. That is why most people say to only use a projector with variable speed. :)

After the lab ruined my short film, I actually had some good luck with a Panasonic P2 camera and B&W+Color 16mm footage projected off an elmo projector onto a screen. Getting the right angles was a pain though. I wouldn't recommend it though unless as a last resort.

Damn, that 8mm is stunning. I didn't ever think 8mm was even capable of anything like that.

What do you think of my idea to cut the print up into six reels if your equipment can't take 1200'? As I said before, seeing as the film is on two reels, I have a hunch that they split it at the change between reels 3 and 4.

Maybe this info was there before, but he says it was four 600' reels spliced together, not six 400' reels.

I don't know much about film, but maybe it would be less difficult to just un-splice them again?

Oops, I didn't read that part. Maybe that would be a better idea, I didn't realize these weren't originally 1200' reels. I only said 400' because a.) six reels to match the six 35mm reels; and b.) I read that Puggo's setup can't take 600' reels.

The auction ends in 8 hrs., it's currently at $415 but the secret reserve price isn't met yet. I sure hope compy or someone else here has enough to pay for it.

If the reserve price is really high, maybe multiple members can chip in. I've done this before; since I don't have either the space to store film or the means to project it, I'd split the cost of a print with a friend who had interest in the film in question, room to store it, and contacts with transferring capabilities.

So if the money compyislife has on hand is still below the reserve, maybe other members like SilverWook or Puggo could offer to cover whatever amount is needed to bid past the reserve. I think it'd be worth it to get the print into the possession of an OT member.

I was bidding on it, but 415 is too much for me :-( I hope that the winner will be one of us

For the record guys you might want to notice that there's a reserve on the auction, so even if it stays at a decent price there's a chance he won't sell it for what it ends at...

I noticed, which is why I threw out the suggestion of multiple members pooling money towards one bid. If nobody meets the reserve this time, I think we should seriously consider this tactic when the seller relists it.

Also, I spotted this auction, in case nobody here has the equipment to *play* these reels, and has an extra $350+ to spare:

Whoever purchases this print:

Years ago I was fortunate enough to first witness the sheer awesomeness of Star Wars. Now it begs us to assist in the struggle against the defacing of history. I regret to inform you that I am unable to purchase this feature myself, but I am not wealthy enough, and I'm afraid my mission to do a transfer has hit a huge delay. I am confident, however, that if the print falls into the right hands, we shall indeed prevail in this cause. You must see this movie properly transferred, and delivered to the generations who shall also wish to witness it. This is our most desperate hour. Help us, [INSERT HEROIC USERNAME HERE], you're... uuhhh... *cough* *cough* Thank you.

so, whoever got it, did it for US$1200.

hope it was worth it!

the price doubled near the end,

but it met the reserve. the buyer

had one 280+ auctions before,

so they were in pretty good shape.

the next highest bidder was around US$930

or so..

I have received word that the item was won by one of our allies. I'm not at liberty to disclose any details at this time, so please don't ask.

Getting the gear to do a proper transfer will be the next hurdle.

The auction description says it's mono. I have no idea if it's the mono mix, or a fold-down of the stereo (like Puggo's English print).

We'll soon find out...

Isn't a great year for OT.com??? Seems like yesterday we were creaming our pants over a Laserdisc conversion from an X0 player...and now we have allies getting prints, converting them, and handing them back to the fans.... Not to mention Mverta's huge dedication to preserve the original star wars for future generations.

In case anyone is keeping score, the print is safely in the hands of it's new owner. Nothing else has happened with it yet, so no new info on anything like the soundtrack.

This video isn't from Star Wars, but it is another example of a Derann Super 8 scope print.

Nice. The Neverending Story is another childhood favorite I'd love to see on film someday.

It's interesting that the color timing of this Derann print is actually fairly similar to the controversial Blu-ray transfer. It looks more balanced than the Blu, but it's interesting to see that there was a version with a similar high-contrast, blue/orange look long before the modern blue-and-orange epidemic...

Agreed. My point is that people railed over the BD transfer because it looked very different from previous releases, but this Derann print has a similar palette. Not the same, but similar. It doesn't justify the BD transfer per se, I just find it interesting.

This looks awesome on film.

I had no idea there was a fuss over the Blu Ray. I'll have to compare it with my old Laserdisc copy sometime.
