It's rare for me to find somebody who has never watched Star Wars...

But tonight, I found him.

He will remain nameless, but at another forum's chat room there was a guy there who told us he had never seen any of the SW movies, but he had the first one on video. We convinced him to watch it right away and he commented on it. He watched an old school VHS, the original unaltered version. The right way to watch it.

(As a note, he is 15 years old.)

Here are his comments.

(Note: Way too long to post in the forum. I made a Google Doc with all the comments. I know, tl:dr. But seriously, check it out)

NEG'S FINAL THOUGHTS:

I was blown away. At first I thought it was the funniest thing ever, then as he progressed I remembered what it was like to watch Star Wars for the first time. It's magical how hooked you can get into the story and the characters. I hope that this made you laugh and smile as much as it did for me.

I just don't understand how anyone can get to 15 years of age and not know anything about Star Wars.

I remember my the reaction of a friend of mine who grew up in a small village in India.

He enjoyed it but he didn't understand what all the red lines flying around were.

He also thought Blade Runner was a conventional thriller filmed in America and was astonished to discover that they had flying Police cars over there.

^ Really, I find the topic title wrong.  I think people know things about SW but most haven't seen it.  and now there's a common thread for people to express this notion.

Good point. Changed the thread title slightly.

I agree. Most girls especially usually haven't seen them, that I know.

I have a 31-year-old friend who watched all six Star Wars movies for the first time last year. She fell in love with it so much she named her newborn daughter Roxanne Leia.

Yeah. He is a kid trying to be funny for an audience. Same with his everything-is-gay theme (3PO, Obi Wan). I know some of you may defend him for 3PO, but really must we try to impose sexuality on a character (let alone a droid) because he is not "manly" as some kind of slur. Totally not being defensive here, seriously... and neither is this a pro-gay thing, because well, Frink knows, jackalope. And whatever speculation there was about Alec, its just immature to insinuate it about his character. I was never that kind of 15 year old and don't excuse it.  But I get why he is doing it.

Pop culture recent references on this topic: On 'Eastbound and Down' this week (s03e03), the main character gets into this Luke/Yoda speech only to find out his teammate has no clue what he's talking about.  And on Whitney a week or two ago, one of the characters doesn't want to admit to her boyfriend that she's never seen Star Wars.  ...In december the UK show 'Never Seen Star Wars' returned.

Don't mean to sound totally negative, on the whole it was an amusing reaction and I wonder if he will be blown away by how things develop in ESB and RTOJ.

I can't read all of Neglify's first post due to some kind of formatting error, so I can't check the review. But I'm glad I can't if it saves me from reading through dumbass shit like this.

My Dad never watched Star Wars, and this was back when it was almost inescapable. Given what happened when he took me to see The Black Hole, it's just as well! ;)

Circa 1990, I encountered a middle aged saleslady who apparently had no idea what Star Wars even was. And yet, she knew of Star Trek. That still freaks me out to this day.

There's a newspaper cartoon reproduced in "The Art of Star Wars" book, where two old geezers discuss the fact they are the only two people who haven't seen the movie. One pulls out a gun and shoots the other, proclaiming "Now I'm the only one!".

Where were you in '77?

I was once one of those people in question....

Back in 1980 or 1981, my teacher was discussing something space-related (may have had something to do with the 1st space shuttle launch) and she somehow got on the subject of Star Wars. She asked that everyone in the class who had seen one of the (then only 2) Star Wars movies, to raise their hand.

I was the ONLY kid in the class who didn't raise my hand and my classmates really
gave me a ribbing because of it!
