Ideas: Re-edits for various movies

 (Edited)

OK, I tried to do this the right way on the off-topics forum, but no one really commented on it and I think its a good topic and would love to get feedback And since the transition is the star wars re-edits its not unfounded to be on this forum.

Clone War, Balance of the Force, Phantom Edits…

After watching magnolia’s re-edits and seeing how dramatically they improved the movie. What other movies (obviously Ep. I is the no-brainer) would you like to see re-editted to make a decent or good movie awesome?

My list…

1.) The Matrix series - I have heard they are releasing a new box set with 50 minutes extra footage for reloaded and since revolutions was shot at the same time with it, these movies could be fixed up to improve what works and what doesn’t. Basically there is so much there that is awesome to work with, it could turn out incredible if fixed up.

2. ) Brotherhood of the Wolf - the editing of this is terrible, but again there is so many scenes that your jaw will drop and others that you will fall asleep, the pacing is problematic and some of the aristocratic fluff is just wrong too.

3.) AI - This again had so much that was amazing and Kubrick’s vision was a dark one (Shining, Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut), but Spielberg made it more like E.T. with feel good-ness mixed in after Kubrick’s death (he would’ve been pissed)…the result is a mixed result movie that sometimes is dark and poignant and sometimes plodding and goofy.

4.) Dune - The theatrical release was a mess and I have heard there are edits out there, but damn there is some compelling story there if it was fixed.
I’ll think of more. And I am not talking about total reshoots, just working with the exisiting film and deleted scenes. BTW there is a fight scene taken out of brotherhood of the wolf that is sick and I have no idea why.

Again, I’d love to hear thoughts on my list and other movies you think could use some editing magic.

I heard a rumor on the Pantom Edit boards WAY BACK WHEN that someone was gonna do this - BUT I guess it was never done.

I have the TV version AKA The Alan Smitee Version on DVDr (3 hour edit - full screen) + the ANAMORPHIC widescreen both copied from the German offical DVD's.

I'd give em up for re-edits if someones really that ambitious

The Miniseries version was really bad though. Although the Lynch version is too short, its better than the miniseries version.

No not the mini- series (which WAS AWESOME but only IF your read the books ) but the Televison Version of David Lynchs DUNE - It was the version that runs 3 hours -

AI. That film could have ended in three different spots (or two depending) that had it stopped at a certain point it would have been much better. The end of the movie is really the only thing that I disliked about it.

Rikter you can get the 3hr version on DVD...

3 hr version

2disc release

The problem with the Smithee version is it is not edited well and is post pan-and-scan for TV. Though some scenes are interesting.

You know I did post three other films up there, any comments/sentiments on those selections.

I still have yet to see any version of Dune on film. I have read the book and loved it. Maybe that's why I'm afraid. I'm going to start with the Lynch, though, and move to the newer version. Then I've got to read the other books before I see the other movie that's out.

As for AI, I would have been fine with it ending right before all that alien world crap begins. It fades to black and that's when I shut off the DVD. Skip all the Spielbergization.

Good topic, Obi-wonton!

I think perfect candidates for re-editing are the "Kill Bill" films. Think of all the possibilities that one could do.

As for the Matrix sequels, I always thought that they were really about one 2 1/2 hour movie split into two 2-hour films. Reloaded especially. There's all sorts of crap that could be cut out of it. I don't understand why they actually want to add footage. At some point I'd like to edit both Reloaded and Revolutions together into one 150-165 minute film.

I also plan on editing the dvd release of the "Blues Brothers" back to the theatrical version.

Hey Hey Hey Don't go trying to tell me that I didn't read the Dune books. They are my favorite books. The mini-series sucked, I thought. But I didn't see the Children of Dune one, but my friend told me its not even worth renting.

Yeah I agree with Matrix having too much bloat, but with more footage it'd be perfect to edit, with more options.

Kill Bill, hmm, now that you mention it I wholeheartedly agree, matter of fact. Tarrantino himself started out making one film...and it started running longer and longer. It does drag in parts and seems to deviate. Part II, was better than I. Both good though.

Sometime some of my beloved anime movies I want to edit out the silly voices or the "he-he-he", "whhhaaaaaaa" (like Moe from the simpsons, in anime it gets used ALOT) and "huh" with extreme faces, they add really silly elements to what can be dark and intelligent movies like Ghost in the Shell or Vampire Hunter D.

I saw the directors cut first(a rare ocurrence), and own the widescreen video of the regular version. I taped the miniseries and its sequels. Still haven't read the novels yet.

Klingon, I assume you're talking about Dune. They are awesome books.

I saw The Village this weekend and it truly begs for a re-edit. While I, Robot, could have just used more depth and intelligence, essentially scenes that weren't filmed...the Village could've been much better if many of the explanatory scenes were held to the very end. You are spoon fed the "twist" from about 15 minutes into the movie and given the full deal 30 minutes before the end. I won't get into details b/c some may want to see it, but trust me if it was re-edited it would've been far more creepy.

As for movies that don't need editing and were flat out awesome...Manchurian Candidate and Bourne Supremacy. Two of the best, not only of the summer...ever. Both classic. And, yes, I see a lot of movies.

Kubrick's AI would have been a mind blowing (and depressing) experience. Too bad he died before he could start shooting it.

lynch's DUNE is awful... crap... the only good in it is the design of various things, the story has been twisted beyond perversion.

I just thought of Jacob's Ladder when I saw Manchurian Candidate (awesome movie, very dark) becuase it was similar to Jacob's. And Jacob's was amazing, matter of fact it was top 5 in many lists of the most scary movies of all time, just because it is so damned disturbing. But after seeing many deleted scenes...it could be scarier and darker with more flow and I think, while the world wasn't ready for it then, its brilliance would be accepted now.

Thanks for the links - I've had both for many years now

As for the others.....

The Matrix -

I can see this being edited into a streamlined 4 hour movie OR longer.........
I would also like to see the ANIMATRIX intergrated into the movie also (kinda like the KILL BILL animated scenes )

Brotherhood of the wolf -

I heard it was weak (from a good many friends) so it stayed of my radar

A.I. -
SHOULD not have been completed and I feel is beyond help - (I love Kubrick and fell that the completion of this film was a farce and an insult to a great man.)

Rikter, dang,bro...I got to disagree with your friends of Brotherhood. See it. Brotherhood of the Wolf, some of the action scenes in it are better than nearly any movie I've seen...honest. Most reviews called it a french version of the matrix and Crouching Tiger. Your friends may have seen it in the theatres as Le pacte de Loupes with english subtitles as did I. On DVD there is an English dub, not a great one but it's less distracting. While there is some fluff in it. I promise, they are some mind-blowing fight scenes in this movie, with things the matrix didn't even think to do. The "wolf" CG is not great (on par with Jar-Jar maybe) and is minorly distracting, but trust me Rik...download it and let me know what you think. Though there is a fight scene in the deleted scenes that is extended and truly spectacular.

My favorite movie review site is Rotten Tomatoes, where you get a snapshot of all major reviewers. Check here (73% of 107 reviews gave it positive ratings)

Brotherhood of the Wolf - Rotten Tomatoes

My favorite DVD review site is DVD Talk, they're reviews are so thorough going over audio, picture, commentaries, deleted scenes, etc.

American 2-disc DVD review

Here it is given, as a movie, 3.5/5 stars and 4 stars for video and audio

The opening paragraph:

"The Brotherhood Of the Wolf" is one of the most beautifully filmed, over-the-top, chaotic and fascinating films I've seen in quite some time. It is a horror film, it is a martial arts picture, it is a period piece, it is a mystery, it is many things and remarkably, the ambitious epic largely succeeds at any genre it touches. The film is reportedly based upon the real "Beast of Gevaudan", which terrorized the French countryside in the 1700's, but the film takes that tale and launches the story into something that, while not perfect, is delightfully ridiculous and wholly entertaining.

More:

The film's look, tone and atmosphere are also extraordinary. The fight sequences certainly are one of the aspects that benefit most from the film's extraordinary cinematography and editing. Superb trickery, such as variable motion, freeze frames and other aspects really give many scenes a very dynamic and visually rich appearance.

My argument for editing which they reiterate:

The film isn't without flaws, though: the 144-minute tale is clearly trying for an epic feel, but occasionally goes on a little too long for its own good, making for a few patches scattered throughout the movie where the pace drags somewhat. Small moments of the story could have also used either some filling out or clarification.

Lastly the Canadian release got the site's Highly Recommended title, which they give out on about 1/100 discs.
3-disc Canadian Release

I guess I am begging you Rikter to see it for yourself.

Did I say I was shocked that your friends wrote it off...hmm...OK I will let it go, but really every review of the movie or DVD is like this...

"Brotherhood of the Wolf is one of those must see films that combines several genres into a final product that delivers in almost every fashion. The film is simply oozing with style and graze and never ceases to entertain."
