Need some help here boyos. I'm downloading some avi files from a "buddy" but I can't get them to play. I have VLC player but it won't play them. There's no error message, just the orange cone while it's playing. I think the program I'm using to DL the file is wrong maybe? Once it is downloaded the files don't show up in my Download folder. Any help would be hot...er, appreciated. Thanks.

First of all, this might not be the best forum to ask about AVI files you downloaded. ;)

But before this thread gets deleted I'll try to offer some advice. Try to identify the codec used in the AVI. There is a program called Gspot that is pretty good with identifying codecs. If you can't figure it out I would ask how to play the files from your "buddy."

There are plenty of legit avi videos you can download, I don't even see the point in bringing up the possibility that they may be pirated.

I've never run into anything VLC couldn't handle, unless it was corrupt to start with.

Sometimes it a matter of the machine that VLC is running on.

If the operating system is no longer supported it might not get the codec updates.

My ancient laptop opens MKVs through VLC but they stutter and skip.

The other computers in the house play them perfectly.

To clarify, these are not pirated files or anything against the TOS here. I think the problem  is that I'm doing something wrong before I'm downloading. It asks what should Firefox do with this file?

 

File name is called extransa.avi.003

says it is a "003 file"

options are:

Open with - 003_auto_file(default)

or VLC player

 

 

or save file.

 

 

When I save the file it automatically has the VLC orange parking cone on the file icon.

Looks like you are dealing with a split file, not an avi file. You need to download all the files and reconnect them before they'll play. That is why your file extension is .003 and not .avi. There should be several other files that go along with the .003 file you have, including but not limited to a .001 and a .002.

If the .002 came before the .avi, then you'd be dealing with a complete avi file that is part of a series, but with the .003 coming after the .avi it means its actual extension is .003 and not .avi, so you are dealing with just a piece of a larger file.

Thank you. That does make sense. However, I have 001 which plays fine. It file icon has a different look that 002 and 003, which are all from the same source. That is why I believe that the program I'm using to open it and/or download it is incorrect.

Well, if you want to PM me a link to the files, or at least PM me a few more details, I could try to help you out more. I am not clear why you think the method you are using to download them might be the problem.

The only situation VLC couldn't handle was when I needed to open some .rmvb files (ended up using Haihaisoft Universal Player for those), but that was a long time ago so they might have added support for those files since then.

If Firefox wants to know what to do with the file then you are trying to open the file with Firefox. Open an instance of VLC and drag one of the files there to see if it plays. It may or may not play in part depending on whether the archive is compressed or not.

WinRar or 7zip should be able to extract the original file from these archives (assuming you have a PC). Make sure you have one of those programs installed, then right click the .001 file and extract to the location of your choice. You should end up with a single file.

I don't think it is a .rar file because I was able to use file 001 without the other two. What happens is that when I am about to download it, in the window where it asks what I want to open it with, the icon of the file already has an orange cone on it (VLC's icon). However, once downloaded, the file does not appear in my download folder. It also will not play if I drag it into the VLC player. However, I think I set VLC as my default viewer before downloading files 002 and 003.

It sounds like it is some type of RAR with the numbers and such. You'll have to have all of the pieces before it combines them. Could also be a bad file.
