UGH! Yeah, the suspense and mystery is gone. Damn Lucas. He's smoking plant vapors again!

Greedo shoots first? Not in my DVD player.

I heard the clip yesterday, and was appalled. You were right, it was originally a chilling scene, because of the mystery contained in the dialogue. Now it's obvious. I also felt that Clive Revill added to the mystery as the Emperor in ESB, because I really had no idea what Palpatine looked like until ROTJ, and when I saw Ian McDiarmid in the Throne Room, I was shocked and stunned.
Clive Revill's still alive, by the way. Is there anything legal he can do about being replaced, because out of all of the replacements (Shaw, Jeremy Bulloch's voice), Revill is the only one being completely excised.

Just to be clear, Jeremy Bullock was never the voice of Boba Fett. That honor originally went to Jason Wingreen, who also portrayed the bartender on All in the Family.

I do agree that the mystery has been completely removed from the Emperor scene.

I didn't think that was Bulloch doing the voice of Fett, but I heard somewhere that it was, and I don't know why I believed it, because the voice was totally devoid of British accentation. But anyway, according to the IMDB, Wingreen's still alive as well; maybe we should form a Revill/Wingreen support group, since they've both been completely hacked out of the trilogy for all time.

Yeah but by that logic that fat Irish actor who was in the Jabba scene has been getting a raw deal since the beginning.

This is sad. I understand the continuity thing, but why destroy the creepiness of the scene?!?!?! The original, even in the SE was a chilling scene. Now, it just points out things the Emperor would obviously know since he's in cahootz with Vader. Good bye poignancy.

I was actually tempted to buy the set once I heard the scream had been taken out. That was a nice day...

"Vader: The son of Skywalker must not become a jedi..."

You're not buying it now, though, are you?

Negative

I was close (if the ESB scream was gone, the SE of Empire is pretty harmless) until this change was made so blantantly clear. I'd love for it to be all a funny hoax and we're actually getting the OOT versions in September...yeah...that'd be funny.

I personally like the Emperor change. It does enhance the scene but it is a bit unfair to Clive Revill. I guess this is what this site is for right.

Well, that's cool if you like it. However, I urge you to watch the original scene. The ONLY thing IMO that is added is that rapport between the Emperor and Vader from ROTJ. But seriously...the Emperor is so darn mysterious in the first two films and now he just lays it out with dialogue that is way too wordy. It's perfect how he only fully reveals himself for the final film. I'd be much more comfy with this if they didn't change the dialogue. The Death Star is barely mentioned in ESB...didn't anyone else think that fit the Empire's dictatorship and style of disinformation/deception?

Mr. Revill's dialogue was much more poignant.

"We have a new enemy-- Luke Skywalker."

"We have a new enemy. The young rebel who destroyed the Death Star. I have no doubt this boy is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker."

If we're watching the films from 1-6, like Lucas wants I'm sure, then this is OBVIOUS! The original line works just fine and is great for pacing and mood (plus, Vader and the Emperor know what he really is...the new scene tries too hard to fool us which is a moot point because we know). And if we've decided to show a n00b the OT, then the name will be MEANINGLESS. They'll have to deduce what's going on. Bad idea for a movie where everything was delivered at the perfect moment.

I like the look, and I like seeing McDiarmid back in action as the Vitamin D deprived Emperor.

But:
A) You can't always get what you want (should be the cardinal rule of film making)
B) It screws over a good actor
C) The new dialogue messes with the pacing and as I said before, mystery of the scene.

Just food for thought

The quality of those cleaned up shots (not the changed ones, just the ones with cleaned up picture quality) is making me drool. That's some extremely good quality.

If only the originals were included! Why did Lucas have to leave them out? Why, why, why? I'm seriously fighting the temptation to buy these DVDs. I must resist! They look so tempting. Really my only problem with them are that they're the new versions. The cleaned up quality, all those bonus features, etc. all make me want to get these. I wanna see the movies in ultra high quality (if only they were the originals!) and I wanna hear the commentaries for all of them and get to see all those extra features. But I'm still fighting against it. Somebody help me resist temptation!

For the love of God ... WHY !

I don't WANT to know what the Emperor looks like here ... he's supposed to be ... The Emperor ... Supreme Evil etc.
And ... that bastard Greedo shoots first ... well ... we've all been over that

The screen quality is ... finger licking good tho.

Damn ... I don't want it altered. But I do want to see it ... dilema here ...

Jeremy Bulloch did not provide the voice for Boba Fett in ESB. I can't remember the name of the actor that did, it wa sin an issue of the UK Official Star Wars magazine dedicated to all things bounty hunter, unfortunately I threw it away when moving

However, JB DOES appear on screen & unmasked in ESB...............he plays the Imperial Officer that is attempting to drag Leia into the elevator whilst she is screaming at Luke that it's a trap! Cunning eh?

at first I wasn't so fussed by replacing the emperor with Ian Mcdiarmind in Empire, but as for seeing the awful screen capture, and hearing the dialogue, I really expected them to do a much better job of it, what was wrong with showing the emperor shrouded in his hood like they did with Sidious in the prequals? He looks far more menacing and mysterious when you can't see his face, and even though we all know fully well what he looks like, they still should have left his final reveal to ROTJ,
There was a fake mock up shot floating around here recently that looked a lot more realistic, and why is the dialogue sooooooo bleedin' obvious, talk about dumbing it down for the kids, and it sounds so badly inserted into the scene, I don't understand why they didn't just replicate the original scene exactly using Ian Mcdiarmind.

I'm having the exact same problem Spyder. The digital cleanup and the surround sound is so tempting, but I have to keep telling myself, 'Why does it matter if these aren't the same films that I grew up with?' I honestly want to be able to accept these changes, I want to just nod and follow Lucas's every whim as if it's gospel, but I can't. It seems my dilemma is that I became a Star Wars fan in 1995-1996, when I was ten and eleven years old, just before the SE changes were made. My first complete viewing of the trilogy were the originals, and I feel I didn't have near enough time to enjoy the originals before they were completely screwed with. I'm just having to take resisting the new set one day (and one viewing of my bootlegs) at a time.

The difference is, Jimbo, that the Irishman was cut out of ANH before the film was released in theatres and way before Star Wars acquired such a huge following.

Ive got some precise PAL runtimes of the dvds from the bbfc site:

ANH: 119m 35s

ESB: 122m 6s

ROTJ: 129m 13s

Hope these are helpful

No, I'll never to turn to the dark side!

Seriously, though, I'm trying to avoid buying these, but on the other hand they look so tempting... So many pros and so little cons (except those few cons are really, really big ones)... Meh, I'll wait and see what happens. I'm pretty sure I'll resist and won't buy these. Although I probably will watch them from whoever I can when they come out just to see all the differences.

And speaking of the differences, it really seems to me that with this DVD release Lucas is doing all the changes he should've done with the first Special Edition. It seems that he's really cleaning up lightsabers and matte lines and stuff and making other improvements (improving Greedo shooting first and Jabba in A New Hope) instead of just using this as a CGI test and not putting much effort into the changes like in the 1997 Special Editions.

However, like in the 1997 versions, he's making some unnecessary and stupid changes again. In 1997 he made Greedo shoot first, Luke scream as he fell, etc. and in 2004 he's making Hayden appear in place of Shaw Sebastian and changing Boba Fett's voice (his old one was awesome, this new one just sucks) and adding Naboo into the end celebration and so on.

Declan Mulholland, the actor who originally portrayed Jabba, was never meant to be in the finished film. He was a stand-in for a puppet or stop-motion creature that was to be added in later.

Seriously, I think Lucas takes his audience for a bunch of idiots. I think he really is dumbing the movies down.

I personally like the Emperor dialog change. The only problem is its very mean to Clive Revell. Does anyone know why he didn't play the Emperor in Return of the Jedi.

Probably because they got Ian McDiarmid for the part. The Emperor only had a thirty second scene in Empire Strikes Back so it wouldn't have been worth all the trouble to look for someone who could actually play the Emperor in Return of the Jedi. They probably didn't even know what the Emperor would look like at the time.

And even if they had gotten Clive to play the Emperor in Return of the Jedi it would've still looked different, because he only did the voice in TESB, the actual part was played by an old woman with chimpanzee eyes superimposed over her (http://www.starwars.com/databank/character/palpatine/?id=bts).

If thats true then I am very happy about this change. I thought Clive was the emperor there. I had no idea the Emperor was originally a women. This should have been done in 1997. Personally I love all the new changes except Hayden head and Bobas voice.
