Yep, I switched it to "their" upon further listening. However, I'm leaving out the "Oh, no". I'm sure there are many lines that were scripted and misspoken, or spoken but are so lost in the mix that I'm not subtitling them as scripted. Subtitles are ultimately designed to show what you'd hear, and if it's even somewhat dubious if someone would even hear it, chances are I'm leaving it out.

You_Too, please let me know if my waiting for msycamore's comments is holding you back. I figure since you're using just the text files, you may either be able to change them yourself or I can transfer you my altered SRT files whenever you need them. I'm fine with either way.

Oh, it's no problem! I'm changing the files myself.

Most professionally done subs don't text every word spoken anyway so I fully understand that some lines aren't included CatBus.

Haven't checked Empire yet, I definitely not want to be some road block for You_Too & d_j's project, so don't wait for me. I'm definitely not an expert on SW dialogue or something :) just found it easy to compare your work with my own and share what I knew, but I will definitely check it out and let you know if there is some issues with it I can spot.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Don't worry, msycamore, you're not holding anything up. Let me know if you're done with SW yet, though. I'm curious.

@msycamore: We're not waiting! But it will take a while for us to finish what we're doing, so in case some more corrections show up here, I'll add them while we still can.

CatBus what was your starting point for the subs? Comparing Project Threepio to other sets and sentences are clustered differently. Is sentence grouping something you want to get into?

For the English subs it was pretty much a blank slate at the start, but I did refer to the official subs whenever I couldn't quite decipher something (and as I'm discovering, that might not have been a good move!). The clustering goal was to maximize display time for subs (readability), and that took priority over almost everything else, including clusters that would seem more linguistically natural (question-answer, etc). I allowed longer lines than the official subs but I still wouldn't let lines run over a certain length, so that was a factor too.

And I actually did the SDH subs first and retrofitted the regular subs from that, so part of the grouping was designed to leave space for SDH cues, even in subs that don't have those cues anymore (so you may see odd spaces where clusters COULD happen but don't). Then the foreign subs were pretty closely derived from the official GOUT subs, but adjusted to this new timing/grouping.

Given that, I'm not surprised that my sentence grouping is different than all other subs out there. And I'm not interested in changing it unless there's a major problem (not sure that's even possible).

Ok, I began checking your Empire subs.

Where Luke says:

"Steady."

"Hey, steady girl."

"Hey, what’s the matter?"

You went with:

"Steady, girl. What’s the matter?"

and I actually think that's enough.

"Well, the bounty hunter we ran into

in Ord Mantell changed my mind."

I'm not sure about this one, but it could be:

"Well, the bounty hunter we ran into

on Ord Mantell changed my mind."

"– I don’t know what you’re talking about."

"– You probably don’t."

I have always heard it like Han says:

"You probably do."

The character of Han and the context of the scene makes both work, Leia's following line is as we all know:

"And what precisely am I supposed to know?"

I think the script have it your way.

Between these two lines:

77

00:08:13,459 --> 00:08:15,894

Your tauntaun will freeze

before you reach the first marker.

78

00:08:15,895 --> 00:08:18,095

Then I’ll see you in hell!

You can include this gibberish if you like:

I’ll cover sector twelve.

Have com-control set screen alpha.

It's barely audible, just thought I would mention it.

"You look strong enough

to pull the ears off a gundark."

could be:

"In fact, you look strong enough

to pull the ears off a Gundark."

I'm not sure, but I think it was scripted that way.

"Picked up something outside

the base’s Zone 12 moving east."

could be:

"We've picked up something outside

the base in zone twelve moving east."

not sure.

156

00:20:38,737 --> 00:20:41,199

– If we followed up every lead—

– But sir, the Hoth system...

157

00:20:41,200 --> 00:20:44,269

– ...is supposed to be devoid of humans.

– You’ve found something?

The line is:

"But, sir, the Hoth system

is supposed to be devoid of human forms."

168

00:21:29,488 --> 00:21:32,416

Oh! Turn it off!

Turn it off!

you can add just an Off! at the end there if you like. ;)

Will post the rest of my findings tomorrow Catbus, hope that's ok, it's gettin late here... I checked SW again and it seems perfectly fine to me. Also, let me know if I'm too pedantic when checking your subs and should really only look for typos.

Just a question, what looks more natural for you guys who have English as their first language, Star Destroyers or Stardestroyers, Sand People or Sandpeople? This was a minor thing I asked myself when doing my english subs, to see the words together was more common back in the day, you rarely see them typed like that anymore.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

I'm still listening and figuring which of these changes I'll be incorporating, but you've been just the right amount of pedantic ;)

As for single-word vs two-words, I just picked one and tried to be consistent. I've seen it both ways too, but I think two words is more modern.

Okay, for those keeping score, I'm applying all of msycamore's suggested changes EXCEPT:

I really think Han says "You probably don't", which I interpret as a suggestion that Leia doesn't even know her true feelings.

I'm leaving out the barely audible gibberish.

I'm taking the gundark change, but not capitalizing gundark.

And that's it! It's a lot of small changes, but I think, like with Star Wars, it's still a change in the right direction. Thanks for everything so far.

The name of Luke's gunner Dak have been spelled Dack sometimes, but he is known as Dak just like you wrote it in the films credits, so that's what I went with as well. Just thought I would mention that if people think it's a typo.

259

00:30:27,925 --> 00:30:30,125

Well, set harpoon.

I’ll cover for you.

could it be?

We’ll set harpoon. I’ll cover for you.

271

00:32:00,418 --> 00:32:03,618

– And get to your transports!

– Oh! Wait for me!

Between the two lines above, this is heard:

-K-one-zero...all troops disengage.

Again, this is barely audible, just wanted to point it out.

280

00:34:23,561 --> 00:34:26,500

Hurry up, Goldenrod. You’re gonna be

a permanent resident.

Could it be:

Or you’re gonna be a permanent resident!

impossible to tell.

370

00:45:32,329 --> 00:45:34,429

After all, I’m only

trying to do my job.

you can add a few words here if you like:

After all, I’m only trying

to do my job in the most--

Leia can be heard yelling "Han!" before Threepio's line here, nothing major. ;)

528

00:59:10,300 --> 00:59:13,700

Aagghh! Go away, go away,

beastly thing! Shoo! Shoo!

534

01:00:01,411 --> 01:00:03,911

Sit down, sweetheart!

We’re taking off!

I always heard it:

Silence, sweetheart!

Am I wrong?

706

01:20:01,809 --> 01:20:03,900

Well, he seems very friendly.

Lando's line can be added here if you don't care about readabilty.

"I never thought I’d catch up with you again."

Regarding this line you asked me about:

781

01:25:17,800 --> 01:25:22,863

He is my friend.

Besides we’ll soon be gone.

It's a tough one, I went with, "But he is my friend." but I agree that it sounds like Harrison doesn't say it.

That was all I could find, very good job CatBus!

I only changed these:

"Well" -> "We'll"

"do my job" -> "do my job in the most..."

Thanks so much! The "but" was always a really tricky line for me because it really dramatically changes the meaning of the statement. With the "but" it's a more straightforward interpretation, but it seems unlike Han to place sentiment (friendship) over guile (trust). Without the "but" it's a sarcastic comment that any friend of Han's is by definition untrustworthy because Han hangs out with thieves and lowlifes. I personally prefer and hear the latter statement, but it's hard to subtitle that sort of sarcasm--italics can't quite do it justice.

EDIT: Oh, and regarding "sit down" vs "silence". Boy you'd think it would be easy to distinguish these words, wouldn't it? But this is one of those cases of very unclear enunciation combined with unhelpful mixing levels that show up pretty regularly in these movies. What I hear is compatible with "sit down", and that seems to be the most common translation of the line, but that doesn't make it definitive. I think "silence" doesn't quite match Han's normal diction, but these movies are not consistent in that either so that doesn't mean much. So I'm sticking with "sit down", but that doesn't mean you're wrong! ;)

That is one of those lines that is very hard for me to hear in any other way, as I've heard it like that all my life, right or wrong. :)

Yeah, I get that. I was genuinely worried you'd convince me there was a "but" in that other line... and my whole sense of that scene would be shot.

OK I'm assuming no more changes for Star Wars or Empire, so I've now re-rendered the overlays for these movies using the new text. All I'm really expecting at this point is suggested changes for Jedi or possibly updated Portuguese subs. After that, v1.1 will be uploaded/released.

So much for not planning any updates to the files ;)

Project files have been updated to version 1.1, incorporating many suggestions from msycamore (original post has been updated as well). Please check tehparadox for the updated link, it is NOT the same as the original link.

Rough summary of changes:

Minor language changes to English subtitles for SW and ESB (fidelity improvements). These changes involved slight timing/other changes that also affected other languages, so subtitles for all languages for SW and ESB have been very slightly changed. ROTJ is unchanged.

Could you rip the subtitles off from a PAL release and then use them in the package? Some aren't that good but it's better than nothing.

Actually that's more-or-less how I've got the non-English subtitles I have right now. Just for my own sanity, I limited the number of languages I was willing to work with, but there are lots of other languages that can be converted this same way.

Here's the process I used:

Rip the subs and OCR them into SRT format.

Open up my English subs in Gaupol, then open the new subs as a translation. Then spend a lot of time adjusting the timing, grouping, fixing OCR errors and just general mistakes. Sometimes a line may even need to be shortened to fit properly. Once you have it all nice and neat, re-time it yet again against something like my German subs (Gaupol will do most of the work automatically)--this takes care of the minor timing differences between my English and non-English subs.

At that point you have an SRT file you can feed into the process described by my workflow documents. You can either make the overlays yourself or ask me to include them in the next round of changes. Keep in mind the next round of changes may be a long way off...

EDIT: If you're talking about just scaling the existing DVD subtitle graphics, that's something You_Too may be doing for the Blu v2 project (not sure). That would be helpful in general, but it's outside the scope of what I want for this project. I want good correct text files as the basis for all my subs, because that gives me a lot more flexibility when rendering. And with all the problems OCR can introduce, that means manual editing.

I don't know if this has already been fixed, but I thought about the first line in the English SDH subs for SW being "Did you hear that?", but no line before it telling what sound it was. (The alarm, explosion?)

Actually, I OCR'd the additional subs and they'll be re-rendered in high quality.

All of the SDH cues in this project are from scratch. Like the English subs in general, the official SDH cues aren't very good in my opinion, so mine are different. Fidelity to home video subs is not a goal of this project.

Well, I think there are only Nordic subtitles on the original version DVDs so it wouldn't be that much more. Just saying if people start to use your package it would be cool to have all that are available.

I get that, and it's really just the OCR/manual correction/manual retiming steps outlined above I don't want to do myself with yet another language I don't speak. If someone wants to do those steps and provide me with the resulting SRT files, I can do the rest and include them in the next iteration of the bundle. Not just Nordic languages, but really any language, including those not available on GOUT discs.

But to be included in this project, I do need those steps done--I simply can't trust OCR without manual correction, nor can I easily manage subtitles with wildly differing timing from each other.
