Does anyone here still like Star Wars? — Page 2

Even our definition of "Star Wars" varies.  Mine is a trilogy of three films from 1977-1983.  If pushed, I will expand my definition to include the Holiday Special and some Ewok movies.

The Special Editions aren't Star Wars, they are impostors.  The prequels aren't Star Wars either, they are relatives of the impostors trying to tag along for the ride.  As such, hating them doesn't even remotely dampen my enthusiasm for Star Wars, because they are unrelated.

Damn, didn't mean to piss off so many people. In the past five seconds I've read that I don't love Star Wars, I am a troll, a former poster, and that I haven't read enough; though that last one is probably true.

What I meant to say was, my first impression of the forum has been people complaining. Every thread has just been "George Lucas takes a dump on Star Wars fans" or "What pissed you off most about Blu-Ray release and any SE?"

To answer your question one look in the "Preservation" section would answer your question.  Labors of love such as this this and this certainly prove dedication to the movies if nothing else.  Hell, even the fanedit section would prove you wrong!  Adywan has, for instance, actually built new models to use for his Revisited edits - ILM '80s style.

The General Discussion forum is a place of lots of bitching and moaning on a regular basis.  There's definitely plenty of complaining over here (and I promise not to single anyone out) but the saving grace is that you can also find plenty of well-thought out criticism.  Or, once every blue moon, somebody says something nice about the movies/extended universe and puts it in a new light most of us probably hadn't previously considered.

That said, welcome to the forum and may you read this before swearing us off.

Very much this.

!!

um...so if I did the math correctly, you...weren't here from 1977-1983!?

[tears welling, lower lip quivering] please tell me that was typo.  its inconceivable that you missed the glory years!!

Hey, I wasn't born until 1984 either.  Too young to have seen them in the theatres, unfortunately, but old enough to have watched them at home many times before the SE's came along.  Too young to have seen GL's transgressions for what they really were until I grew up, but old enough to have a strong memory of what was to fall back on once the disillusionment set in.  Both old and young enough to love the real Star Wars for all time.

Born in 1984 as well, and very well put. My thoughts exactly!

most heartbreaking thing is the lack of the OOT.

second most heartbreaking thing are all the fans that love Star Wars but cruelly missed that magical time in 1977-1983, only to hear about it secondhand.

never to know...to feel...to embrace and soak it all in.  (sob)

all you have for a frame of reference is the buildup to TPM and maybe the month the SEs came out in 1997.  a mere pittance (sob)

Bah! You haven't REALLY seen Star Wars unless you've done it from inside a Chevette with a crackly mono speaker stuck in your window.  And the reel breaks.  Twice.

Trust me kids, most of us old farts didn't have a very great theatrical experience either, in spite of living during the glory days.

ill see your Bah! and raise you a Pshaw!

i think once the OOT problem is settled, we need to shift our efforts to educate the young'uns on the glory years. there are too many fans born after 1982! (if you were born in 1981, still enough time to enjoy the phenomenon)

worse thing that could happen is the post PT kids think star wars was like a 70s Twilight or Avatar or Angry Birds.  I shudder at the thought.

I was born in '91, but I've loved Star Wars since I've been able to cry. I haven't had the pleasure of seeing any Star Wars in theaters besides the Prequels which, and I apologize for this, is why I'm excited about them in 3D, so I can see them in theaters.

I get what someone (I forgot who) said each person has their own definition of what Star Wars means to them. Makes sense.

I say never release the originals. Keep the fans talking about something.

I can honestly say I like everything Star Wars to some extent.

And @walking carpet, I was born a long time after 82, but I still grew up on the OOT, and I love far more than anything else that's Star Wars.

 I agree.

I did try this before though, and it did not go very well. I got in to an argument with this guy who was not around for any of the original films and  accused me of pissing on him.

I didn't think I was that old !!!

Did you actually piss on him? 'Cause I can see how that might upset a bloke.

I will always enjoy the UOT. As a kid in the 90s I also enjoyed various SW-related entertainment like some of the EU comics/novels, video games, customizable card game, etc. Every now and then I'll look back fondly on enjoying those activities

However, I've come to fucking hate the Star Wars franchise. By that, I mean all the garbage with the prequels, OT changes, rehashing storylines in the EU, merchandising, Lucas whining and telling his fans to fuck off, apologists being apologists, etc. SW is incredibly played out, and it depresses me that people still give Lucas money for the same crap over and over because it's wrapped in a slightly different package.

This is more-or-less my stance as well, especially in regards to the EU.

I like Star Wars.

Still.

By still, I mean I liked it before, and I like it now.

Yep I still love SW, but ONLY the UOT era.  I feel the exact same way georgec does.  There is only 1 other WS I visit concerning SW, but I love this site due to the focus on the UOT.

What's this? Another "youngin" who knows nothing of "the glory years"? Rejoice!

I love STAR WARS - the movie and its two sequels.

I was born in '88, so I never saw the originals in cinema and I even saw the Special Editions of ESB and ROTJ before I saw the original, so for me, wanting the original versions of the SW Trilogy isn't a question of some kind of childhood nostalgia, it's a question of film history - when I watch a film made in a certain era, I want it to look that way - I watched Butch Casidy and the Sundance Kid on Blu-Ray today and it was a beautiful transfer, which looked like a pristine print of a 60s film and it was magical.

I liked the prequels when I was a kid but I also liked Power Rangers you know. So when I grew up, I realized they weren't so great. I don't hate the prequels, I hate that they're the reason that the original trilogy movies, indisputably some of the most acclaimed films in history, and movies I love, are being changed in their image and the original versions suppressed into obscurity.

I wish I had saved all my SW newspaper clippings. They are a nice reminder of those days.

I was 12 years old when Star Wars was released.

I'll be 47 this year and still mad as a hatter over the original trilogy.
