3D STAR WARS for the masses...has ARRIVED! — Page 33

I remember seeing the UK quad poster advertising the first film as the cross channel movie on a ferry (it must have been 1981 or at a pinch 1982).

I couldn't afford to go in so I just drooled over the lovely painting.

I can't imagine anyone getting excited by that poster.

Fans - "Man, 25 million in a week?  That shows how good it is."

A tip of the cap, George.  You're a fucking genius.

Yup. Go look at the TFN forums - they're celebrating the box office numbers as vindication of the excellence of the TPM movie.

Eh, clicking around there just now, it just seems like a few shrilly defensive guys. Doesn't seem like anyone having much fun even though this should be their super bowl, capping a great year in which they got everything  they could want.

ouch - last night was a 78% drop from last friday!

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3372&p=.htm

damn - that extra presidents day is gonna be a life saver now.

interesting that ghost rider didn;t get the top stop - people really like this Vow movie.

[sigh] based on the charts, looks like I'll be one of only a handfull of people to see the new studio ghibli movie in my theatre- for the sixth time in a row (still cant believe spirited away wasn't a huge hit)

-----------------------------------------------------

just out of curiosity, I looked up green hornet cuz zombie kept mentioning it and it had a big but not colossal 48% weekend drop.

batman and robin had a 63%

2 movies that I knew had monster drops were Hulk and green Lantern but even those were just 65%!

[sigh] the once proud saga formerly known as star wars.

Is it dubbed?  If it's subbed, I'll go see it.

It's dubbed. Carol Burnett was on Conan promoting it recently.

afaik, its dubbed.  they used american cast to dub it.  don't think it was necessary - the original dub had an english cast that was pretty good.  why re-dub it twice?

if dub is not successful, no chance for a sub.  Its true, subs are better (GRave of the Fireflies being the greatest example).  But i have been pretty pleased with the ghibli dubs like Spirited Away.

We’re doing 3D versions of all six films, one a year, starting in February of next year. We start with [episode] one and go all the way through six, totally chronological. One a year, if they work. If they don’t, then there will be just one [episode converted to 3D].

-Rick McCallum

I just don't know what constitutes "work".

So, Episode I had a monstrous drop and will likely not even clear $4 million this weekend. The holiday will be a godsend, but only another million or so. And then that's it. It's gone. And it will have made barely--just barely--a little over $30 million.

Egads. I overestimated the film but I never thought that this thing would only make $30 million. Twice that, sure, but $30 million? That's even worse than Clone Wars!

It makes it pretty clear what was driving the sales of the blu-ray box set. And it wasn't anything with Jar Jar Binks in it.

People say Episode I suffered because of the hype. It was "the new Star Wars film" and everyone expected the moon. In fact, that was the only thing it had going for it. Episode I without the hype gives you a box-office flop. People today realize how awful it was and can't be bothered to even see it once. Is this going to be the new excuse? "People will realize Episode I's greatness if only they could watch it again." What a disaster. I actually think Episode I deserves better than $30 million, but then again: I still haven't seen the re-release, and don't plan to, so what does that tell you about how I really feel?

I went to go see it yesterday and walk out even before the pod race.  I will be kicking myself for that one for a long time.

looking for HDTV of the  Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.  Also HDTV of The Lord of the Rings trilogy

$30 mil?  I'll bet TRM 3D could clear that. ;-)

So will this not be in theaters next weekend? As much as it pains me, I was going to take my son next weekend (he asked to go).

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

I wouldn't be surprised if Lucas had a deal that specified a minimum run regardless of box office performance.

boxofficemojo is saying 7.8 million for weekend estimates.  $3.5 million for saturday estimates.  looks like the friday -> saturday numbers are up across all films (poor ghost rider still got beat by Vow and safe house), but I am a little surprised by this and skeptical.  I was thinking 7.8 million for weekend and presidents day total.

they also say this, which i find very interesting:

-----

Still, by Sunday The Phantom Menace's total gross will exceed the original Star Wars ($461 million), which will make it the highest-grossing entry in the series and fourth highest-grossing movie ever.

In 1985 there was a re-release of JEDI that was a total non-event, and was pretty much part of the last gasp of SW, entering its lowest point of popularity.  In tickets sold it's not that far off from this much more expensive reissue, so what does it take for LFL to acknowledge any kind of flaw in their M.O.? (the M.O. being: really little kids are the only thing that matters, the rest of you who supported this thing for 20 years can suck it. Maybe it's a little off-putting? Maybe?)

Can't wait for George to blame the fans when they ask for the other movies in 3D and he says that they didn't give him enough money to see Jar Jar get farted on in 3D.

Still can't understand why people would want any of the movies, prequel or original, in 3D. Yes, I realize it's a fad and people like it for the kiddies, but anyone with half a brain should realize that giving George money to sell them the same garbage over and over again is a bad thing.

Did they promote it much?  I don't even recall the reissue, although I saw a lot of movies that year.

Well, there was a trailer and poster, not sure how extensive it was, pretty sure it was a wide release.

edit-who can compete with Porky's Revenge anyway

Weekend Box Office Results for March 29-31, 1985 - Box Office Mojo

It was interesting how the 1997 release caused EMPIRE and JEDI to switch places. As for Phantom passing star wars on the list like it means something, shee-yit. A 3D ticket here is 19.50, vs. 2 bucks or less in 1977, get real.

I think more people, like me, would watch this if they did it the same way as in 1997. Show all six movies, with only a few weeks/ month between them.
