I like how many different names the sets have had (Saga, Quadrilogy, Anthology). And that the newest one makes the most sense, with "quadrilogy" not even close to being a real word.

Exactly! A real word! I feel stupid saying "quadrilogy".

So I take it you've compared both the pre-'Quadrilogy' DVD version and 'Quadrilogy' DVD version against your Blu-ray version on the same equipment/settings to make this judgement then?

If that's the only way to really tell, I just don't get why the slight difference in color timing is that huge of an issue.

To me, color timing only becomes an issue when it's at Blade Runner Final Cut or 2004 Star Wars levels of change.  This set is nowhere near that.

Yes; I have.  Put it this way: I tend to think that the colors are not as far from the original DVD as the quadrilogy disc.  Whether my "not as far" is near enough for you, I can't say.  I am really pleased with how the BD looks, but you'll just have to make up your own mind. :-)

Thanks for posting them, dark_jedi.

any chance of seeing the Director's Cut version of those same shots, d_j, please?

Sorry it took so long but here are the screens of the Director's Cut.

I actually like the added star field myself.

I agree, which is why I was never too terribly bothered by it in the "theatrical cut" on the 2003 DVDs.

But I'm glad that the shots are back to the way they were in 1979 in the Blu-Ray theatrical cut.

I'm sure it's in the Becktionary.

I don't mind quadrilogy, as silly as it sounds.

Well that's the thing I guess.  You personally reckon there's only a 'slight' difference, whereas I happen to think there's more than just a 'slight' difference between the pre-'Quadrilogy' ALIEN dvd colour and the 'Quadrilogy' ALIEN dvd colour to begin with...

Pre-'Quadrilogy' (PAL) dvd in top shots, with 'Quadrilogy' (PAL) dvd shots underneath -

I wish I could prefer the 'Quadrilogy' dvd's altered colouring, but I really don't...and that's why I was concerned that the blu-ray would be just as off-putting to me too.

But after Chewtobacca's comments about the blu-ray having a more of a 'mid-way' look compared to the previous contrasting dvd releases, I may be less disappointed once I get a chance to compare them all myself.

Saga? I know the '99 release was "Alien Legacy."

Thanks, for the screen-caps dark_jedi, I wanted to see them mostly to have it re-confirmed that it was a tweak so what I did remember wasn't wrong, IMDB have been wrong before and it's been a long time since I saw the DC. Yes, those tweaks are kinda nice, the starfield for the second pic looks a bit weird though...I'm drooling over the detail in those images!

ImperialFighter, don't think you're alone in noticing the shift in color-timing, the net is full of forums discussing this same topic at the moment. Me myself have never had the fortune to see this masterpiece in it's original form in the cinema, so I really can't tell what is right or wrong and I doubt anyone of us can but imo. and that's what all this comes down to, it doesn't look like the Alien I know, from the moment I saw screen caps from the Directors Cut DVD in '03 I thought it looked unnatural even though it's a subtle shift in hue, you don't need a bulldozer-George Lucas change or Bladerunner - Final cut change in color to find it distracting if you are attached to a certain look in a film. Subtleties in colors sets a mood.

Well, maybe it's all nitpicking, all three releases are after all damn fine releases with a video standard that all of us would be very happy to have of a certain other set of movies. ;) To me the '99 DVD will be fine until I go HD and waiting isn't a problem d_j, that is something that we Star Wars fans are experts on. :)

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

I saw the Aliens Blu-ray today and it looks great, way better than the HDTV captures and the DVNR is by no means excessive. Only the blue shift may be a bit too much but the colours actually seem more natural than the red shift of the previous release.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but found this today:

Turns out the Aliens blu-ray had more changes to it than I had thought. I can't check my discs at the moment due to being in the middle of a house move but are these changes made to both versions or just the Special Edition?

Your brain just makes s**t up!

I cannot answer your question as I don't own this release myself, but the pulse rifle/ flamethrower edit mixup on the dropship, had apparently been corrected already in '92 for the broadcast version of the Special Edition, only for the DVD's to bring back the continuity error.

On a second look at that page you linked to, except "scratches on the window" and "Bishop in the hole" scenes, aren't the other two scenes listed exclusive to the Special Edition cut of the film?
