Remember how the escaping Falcon cut to Luke re-entering the gantry room in ESB?
That's really the only way to do it.
Cut from the triumphant swell of the music to the howl of the wind (just not the howl of the wind machines).

Sluggo, yeah it was something I was just curious about. I like some of the imagery in the sandstorm scene - and honestly didn't think it would work at all dubbing in the dialogue like that, but I don't think it's too bad. You're right about the music, though. After the big sail barge climax the music would need to be more tranquil.
...
That's funny because that's why the cut the scene in the first place. They felt the audience needed a chance to catch its breath after the sail barge fight. I'd love to see a second stab at this, either with maybe a little calmer music or just the wind.
But it is brilliant so far!
Bingowings, you might be right that no music is best, but because of the horrendous image quality I'm tempted to add music, if for no other reason than to take our attention away from the images.
Sluggo, yeah that's why it was cut, and it makes total sense from a pacing sense, but the scene does contain some decent cinematic imagery - something that Jedi lacks as a whole. It also has a nice little moment between Han and Luke which the film badly needed, and definitely could be better than the scene in space that replaced it. What I may do is add the Emperor at the Death Star scene after the sail barge, then cut back to this and see how that works.
Bottom line is the picture quality's so pathetic that unless some good samaritan comes along and manages to restore the scene it's not usable in a serious Jedi edit.
I believe emanswfan is restoring that very scene at the present. He is currently helping us out with our collaborative project, but I'm sure his work will be for everyone's enjoyment.
Cool. If he could get that scene to a decent quality it would be incredibly impressive.
I know, but he seems pretty confident he can do it, and I trust him.
I've just been reading the many praises of your edit, and now I don't know why I haven't tried it out sooner. I'm going to watch it for inspiration. It truly sounds good!
I hope you enjoy it. If you'd like to watch the experimental edit of Jedi I'm working on now I can get that to you as well.
I'd love to sample your new edit. I unfortunately can't even seem to get your original to download, either the AVI or DVD. Is there any chance you could upload those once again, or perhaps is there a torrent available? I don't know if the problem is RapidShare or what, but I'm having no luck.
Check your PMs.
hey daneditor, just watched your sandstorm clip. i was trying something similar a while back with the intercom dialogue, but wasn't as successful as you. i agree with bingo about the music. the scene could use some perhaps, but the preceeding scene needs a change in tone.
is there any chance you could upload a musicless version so i could have a play with it?
Sure, I'll render and upload the sandstorm scene minus the music later today.
On the subject of how the musical tone needs to match the preceding scene, here is version two of the sandstorm edit with new music, and with the scenes around it as context:
Ben, here's the sandstorm scene without the score:

It highlights that the score also acts to hide the dodgy dialogue editing.
thanks daneditor! ill see what i can make from it. currently i'm interested in pursuing what bingo suggested about mimicking the falcon escape from ESB. it changes to the tone of the sail barge assault so much when that score is applied to the end.

Hey dan editor, I watched your cut of ROTJ and I enjoyed it although I thought it was a bit short you hit the right notes and nothing was left unexplained It was solid but I especially liked how you wrapped up the end it was nice... That clip is interesting and works well going to check the sandstorm one in a bit...
I did a cut of ROTJ and I think It might interest you especially if you are dabbling with ideas like that clip above so If you would like to see a different perspective I'll provide you the link it's not Vgood quality it's more a storyboard at present but still it's watchable so let me know if this interests you... I took some inspiration from you on changing jabbas lines and the speeder bike not making that whirring sound and the different point of view cut to obiwan on dagobah.
I did use your cut for the leia getting shot in the arm and the stormtroopers without the "I love you" "I know call back but I now plan to take this back to just having leia shot in the arm... Anyway as I said good work It was enjoyable to watch.
watched the sandstorm edit and you got the sounds synched up well it just don't work for some reason but great work and hope to see more of your ideas in the future I choose just to use luke with this and having him walk away from the lars homestead would plan to film somone as the back of his head with matching clothes on a matte

I think this is perfect, and I'm going to put it in our thread as well. A nice, charming, simple addition that adds life to the film, and essentially adds a sense of danger as well.
Ronster, I'm glad you enjoyed the edit. I agree that it's a little short, but I think the pacing is pretty good throughout, and at the time (it was about a year ago I was originally working on it) there weren't any deleted scenes and I didn't realise that there were fan films that had usable footage.
Re: your edit. Sure, it sounds interesting, I'd like to take a look at it.
Darth_Ender: yeah, I really like that moment. It's from a trailer for a fan film called Holo Xperience, and it looks like it's a current project - unlike Tydirium which seems to have been abandoned. I reckon there may have been enough footage, if Tydirium had been released, to completely ditch the Ewoks from the film.

Sent you a link... Agreed you did well, and the pacing was good... This is why I respect your edit alot because that has to be one of the main concerns and you showed that and did not leave any plot gaps.

Visually, this works very well.
Pacing and plot wise, I'm confused.
I'm not sure why we need to show the imperials watching the shuttle land where it's not supposed to. What does this show? Does this mean they know these are rebels? Are they alerting base that they've seen this? Are these supposed to be the same biker scouts that we see a few minutes later?
And I think the binocular shot watching the shuttle carries on for a bit too long. You can definitely cut that to just the landing part to communicate the same thing.
You know of the rebellion against the Empire?
To me it's supposed to indicate to the audience that stormtroopers are all over Endor, hence the rebels are walking into a really dangerous place - which increases the drama, (as does the fact the stormtrooper watches the shuttle land somewhere clearly off the beaten track and not where Imperial troops would have landed). It also hints at the idea that the Empire know that all about the rebel mission - something later confirmed by the Emperor.
It also works because it has a cinematic quality and scale to it which ROTJ largely lacked... and is mostly why I like it.
It does play a bit like a bunch of airport security guards looking up and wondering why Flight 94 out from New Delhi seems to be heading for Central Park.
Exactly what I was going for. ;)
I think I'd remove the shot with Half Dome in it, but the rest adds a nice element of danger.
I had to google Half Dome to get what you meant, but yeah I think you're right, it's probably better without that shot.
Finally got round to watching this and it has now become my go-to version of RotJ.
My favourite cuts were the removal of Fett and the reduction of (most of) the Ewok cuteness (so glad to see the back of the scene where Wickett finds Leia!)
However, I believe the cuts could have gone a bit further in a couple of scenes. In particular:
* Bib Fortuna's first scene was edited slightly, but could have been removed completely.
* The little Ewok cuddling Han's leg has always made me cringe!
* I've always liked the idea of removing the Emporer's line regarding 'an entire platoon of his best troops' being sent to Endor.
Also, the cutting of R2 and 3PO being pulled from the sand, as well as the Ewoks and Chewie swinging to the AT-ST present slight continuity issues.
Anyway, these are minor issues. The edit flows very well and I am looking forward to watching the v2 workprint which daneditor kindly sent me the links to. Nice work!
Spoiler free for the ST
