OK, I'll just come out and say it: I did! And I'm not changing it. I added some light grain to the scenes where the static grain was a big issue; the desert sequence until the canyon wipe and the selling the droids sequence. It's there in the last WP and I think it works great.

Didn't know you actually did it. In any case, that sounds good. As I said before, a more "alive" picture sounds promising than a mildly sterilised one.

Ok, I just wanted to chime in here about the color-timing, even though this argument has been beat to death.

First-off, Harmy, I think you're doing an incredible job on this.  In my opinion the new color-timing is not only a huge improvement, but I am also quite confident, based on your new sources that it is very close to how people viewed this movie in 1977, which should clearly be the ultimate goal.

The one shot, though, that really bugs me is the Tantive shot that OMEN posted earlier:  http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/107151   The difference in color-tone here between these two shots is pretty jarring, and it definitely took me out of the scene.

Personally I would fix that second shot to match up more closely with the rest of the scene.   Fixing a few glaring inconsistencies like this, IMO, would not compromise the integrity of a theatrical restoration, and each scene would still have the same look and feel as it originally did in 1977.

I hate to bring up stuff like this, as I know your position on the matter, but I just had to get it off my chest.  Again, I think you're doing an awesome job, and I think I am more excited about this project than anyone here.  (my wife thinks I'm obsessed)  I think she's right...

It's apparent from your screenshots that there's something wrong with your settings - blacks aren't black in the screenshots from the new WP (even the black bars), which makes everything look faded. If you're using MPC, try rightclick > render settings> reset> optimal render settings.

My apologies. I played the file with my PS3 and the colors look great!

A few things; I still think the planet in the opening shot could be more saturated, Vader still looks a bit odd, (love him in the 1st workprint) the R2 canyon sequence and the sandcrawler interior look very dark.

Everything else seems to be an improvement. You obviously know what you're doing more than the peanut gallery. ;)

On a technical note, the pan shot of the escape pod going towards the planet, there seems to be a stuttering effect. Is that part of the original or something caused by the 25 fps?

This definitely couldn't be caused by pal framerate, so I must assume it was always like that.

@ Cobra Kai:

I actually already tweaked this particular one, for the exact reasons you stated in your post.

I detected too a little difference in color-tone in the middle of this transition

It is less than a second but I don't know maybe it's easy to fix

Harmy If it requires a lot of your time, just forget it .... I think I'm the only one who saw it. :-p

Cobra kai I think you're not the only one obsessed with this project!! We are all nuts here!! hahah... lol

Amazing - the picture quality keeps getting better and better

I finished watching Workprint 2.3, and I noticed 2 things:

11:25 - ATTACK OF THE JAGGIES. I know I've brought this up before, but these jaggies in the xwing still stand out to me. I really think manually rotating the xwing will avoid this issue. I'd be willing to take a shot at it myself frame by frame in Photoshop, if that would help.

12:46 - As the shot fades from the explosions to Luke in the cockpit, the screen looks gray and blocky.

15:55 - The Rebel tactical table is too blue. I think this is an SE issue.

Reel 1 of WP3 looks good. I think everything I noticed has been brought up already. Since you're the one with the references, Harmy, I'll just trust in your color choices. FYI, the only way I would get WP3R1 to play was to download the latest version of VLC Player (the old version I had worked for all the other workprints and videos).

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

I'll try but no promises. If you want to give it a shot, who am I to refuse, go ahead, if it works, I'll gladly accept it :-)

That's because it's from GOUT. They used an alternate take in the SE.

Thanks, been looking for that. I think there was maybe one more instance of that, so if anyone found it, let me know.

That's weird, I don't think I did anything differently this time.

BTW. I should be getting the IB print references for the rest of the reels soon, so this project is one step closer to completion.

Hey Harmy should I download V1 right now or wait for V2? Exactly how big of a difference is there between the two?

Author
Time

Huge! At this point, I'd definitely wait for v2, it should be done in a couple of weeks and it will be tons better than v1 in practically every aspect.

Sorry if this has been up before but will it be available with "lossless" audio?

In WP2.3, the other instances of the table are at 11:17 and 21:57.

And a despecialization I think you missed: at 22:03, the aurebesh for Yavin appears on the Death Star screen. I know this was fixed in DEED v1.

So, while waiting for the next batch of reference frames, I'm playing around a bit:

I think those shots look incredible; awesome to hear that it's nearing the completion point!!

I know you said you're waiting on more reference frames Harmy, but are the Death Star's walls in that first Despecialized Edition v2.0 shot likely to stay that colour?  Just curious, as they really seem too cyan, especially compared to the GOUT and the other DeEd shots.

As for the blaster bolts, though... fan-freaking-tastic!  Did you do the same thing for all the blaster bolts in the opening Blockade Runner shootout?

I'll see about that depending on what the reference will show but you can't compare it to the GOUT, which is seriously desaturated.

Oh, no, no way in hell. I believe the lasers in the Blocade Runner shootout weren't changed beyond possibly, maybe being recomposited, but these that I changed are all new CG lasers.

Can't wait for this new release, it's looking good. So only Star Wars is getting a v2.0 right?

Nope, last I heard Harmy's planning for the whole set.  Although I hope he gives himself a vacation after this one.

He certainly deserves one.

From what I gather, lossless audio track/s may be offered as a separate download which the user can then mux with the video themselves.

And there's also the possibility that lossless audio will be included on a future BD-25 version, should one eventuate...

Actually, I'm definitely doing the BD now but it will come out later than the AVCHD and MKV, because it will need some work to make a BD release worthwhile.
