To be fair though, I don't think he has any problem with a director doing anything to their own movie. He's only spoken out when the filmmakers haven't been involved.

In that case, the criticism would still apply to Empire and Jedi.

Are 3D Blu Rays "backwards compatible" with 2D viewing?

My understanding was that they are not. But you can buy...2D glasses? I'm not sure what to call them, but you wear them and it makes it look like 2D. They made them for people who get headaches from the 3D. But if 3D becomes an industry norm then I'm sure there will be TVs or players made where it converts the image back into 2D.

Stereo 3D consists of 2 2D images, so you should always be able to just view only the left or the right eye picture, there's no "conversion" involved.

Watched this at the cinema today and thought I'd share some of my thoughts. Not going to bother talking about the story or acting. You either tolerate it or hate it. Just talking from an entirely visual point of view.

Not surprisingly there isn't that many jump out, in your face moments during the film. A couple of the blue Gungan bombs flying towards the camera and Obi Wan's jumping and slashing at the camera are the main in your face moments but apart from that the 3D conversion is pretty subtle.

It does add depth to many shots throughout the film, the following is a list of what stood out to me:

  • The stars in the opening crawl stood out to me a bit more and the exterior space shots all had added depth to them, especially the shots with planetary bodies in them.
  • Surprisingly, the battle droids looked a bit more "realistic" and better defined spatially. The added depth helps them look less like they where added to the scene.
  • The fish outside the Gungan city are more noticeable thanks to them being in the foreground with added depth.
  • The trip through Naboo's core looks better and the fish that chase them all stand out a lot more. One swims towards the camera but stops short of being a showy in your face shot.
  • Several of the background characters in Mos Espa stand out more, mainly the CG ones. I thought some had been added for the 3D release but after checking the blu-rays they're the same just more noticeable.
  • The pod race looks good in 3D. The pods stand out more and look a bit more realistic with the added depth. Nothing jumps out at you but the whole sequence has a bit more "umph" to it.

As far as I can tell, the film is the same as the blu-ray release with digital Yoda and the new shot of the Neimoidian viewscreen. Unlike one of the reviews Adywan posted, I didn't notice anything added to the pod race that wasn't in the blu-ray. No extra debris and the Clone Wars bounty hunter is Aurra Sing who has been in every version of TPM since 1999.

However I did notice a couple of potentially overlooked alterations. The first I'm not certain of and will need confirmation from someone else.

  • The Fox logo is a non rotating version of the new Avatar onwards logo, updated from the late 90's version seen on all other versions of the film.
  • The end credits have been altered slightly. Most noticeably the cast list. Now instead of being listed one after the other on different lines like this:

                           Qui-Gon Jinn .... Liam Neeson

                    Obi-Wan Kenobi .... Ewan McGregor

               Queen Amidala/Padmé .... Natalie Portman

                           Anakin Skywalker .... Jake Lloyd

They are listed 2 per line line this:

Qui-Gon Jinn .... Liam Neeson                              Obi-Wan Kenobi .... Ewan McGregor

Queen Amidala/Padmé .... Natalie Portman        Anakin Skywalker .... Jake Lloyd

George Lucas has also added a scene after the end credits where Samuel L. Jackson shows up to assemble a team of avengers.

Anyway, those are just some of my observations after watching it earlier today, The majority of them are true but one of them is completely made up.

Your brain just makes s**t up!

A fate worse than death? Having your head digitally replaced with that of Hayden Christensen!

The Hollywood Reporter: In this 3D conversion of what is Episode 1 — The Phantom Menace, were there any changes made to any characters or the plot, or was it just a conversion?

George Lucas: Changes are not unusual — I mean, most movies when they release them they make changes. But somehow, when I make the slightest change, everybody thinks it’s the end of the world. That whole issue between filmmakers and the studios with the studios being able to change things without even letting the director of the movie know … I’m very much involved in that [so that’s not happening here]. … My job is to try to make the best possible movie it can be — and the current version is the Blu-ray version. That’s the one that’s been made into 3D. But it’s just a conversion. We haven’t made any changes other than the 3D.

I wonder how many people will turn out for the midnight shows this evening?

Drew McWeeny at HitFix was banned from Skywalker Ranch for 10 years, until maybe one or two years ago. He has written the only non-negative review of TPM 3D so far. Coincidence?

Every other review I've seen says the same thing - crap in poorly done, post-converted 3D is still crap.

What do you get when you combine a washed out DVNR ridden transfer of a film with a 3D post conversion, horrible theater service, and the most annoying gaggle of fan-boys to ever assemble in one place?  You get what pretty much amounts to my worst experience at the movies in ages, my trip to the midnight showing of The Phantom Menace.

First of all, the movie looks like shit.  Imagine taking the GOUT and slapping a 3D conversion on top of it.  That's seriously what this looked like.  A complete blurry mess.  Colors were washed out, detail was gone, some of the battle droids streaked almost as bad as Han's Tauntan entering Echo base.  The only thing I can really say that was all that impressive about this viewing was the awesome 3D epic-ness that was Liam Neeson's nose during close ups coming right at me.  Not even the Pod-race was up to par.

Almost as bad as the transfer were the fans in attendance.  I'm not sure who was more annoying, the group of hecklers in front of us who spent the whole film running their mouths and cracking jokes and before the movie started, got up in front of the theaters and asked people if they actually liked this movie they were about to see then started asking questions straight out of the RedLetterMedia reviews.  I'm sorry, but whether you like the Prequels or hate them, showing up and paying your money just to heckle the films and the fans is a douche thing to do.  Or the guy who was shouting, clapping, and cheering over enthusiastically at everything from Jar Jar, to "yippee!", to "are you and angel?" (that kids a pimp he said) and basically every shot Darth Maul was in.  Seriously, the guy started shouting "fuck yeah" and "fuck him up" during the final duel while there were CHILDREN present.

The presentation of the film was bad, but I've never been more embarrassed by the fan base than I was tonight.  The fans are freaking insane and I seriously just want it all to stop.  Finish up Clone Wars, forget the freaking live action series, and wrap up the EU with some kind of logical closure for Han, Luke, and Leia.  When something gets this overly commercialized, it just starts to suck and the fan rage on both sides of the Lucas love/hate wagon are just adding fuel to the fire.

This would all be so much simpler if I were just a Big Lebowski fan.

My experience tonight wasn't much better. I arrived at 10 to try and get a decent seat. We were only the second in line which is pretty sad for a Star Wars film. The line got bigger as time passed but the theater never even filled to capacity.

The loudest jerk in the theater decided to sit right behind me and he was drunk as a skunk. He shouted at least ten times throughout the night that, "THE POD RACE IS THE ONLY REASON THIS FILM EXISTS!" Amongst other annoying drivel. The crowd itself was largely the college set. There were also a couple families. I saw at least four fully robed Jedi in the theater with two people wandering around with clone trooper helmets on. There was a lot of Star Wars themed apparel.

As for the film itself....ugh. It was strange I've seen TPM a respectable amount of times but I ended up catching little lines I didn't remember hearing before. Which was odd because I thought I pretty much had that film memorized. The 3D was terrible! There's depth but it was almost indiscernible. The other problem was that they didn't bother to brighten the film to counteract the darkening of the 3D glasses so the whole film is pretty murky.

The only part of the presentation I found enjoyable was the sound. It started off really quiet which is not what you want right at the beginning of the film when music kicks in but I think they eventually figured it out and turned it up. Very rich sound and I think it really underscored the fact that I need to get a good sound system for my home. =P

Wow, I can't imagine this sort of behavior tolerated at the theaters around here. They even patrol the auditoriums three or four times during a movie, presumably to catch people trying to use a camera.

Well that's the thing. In my theater they were loud and rowdy before the film started but then shut up for the most part once it did. With the exception of a couple of well timed wisecracks.

sorry to hear you guys had a poor experience.

regardless of the PTs quality, one positive takeaway I had was the theatrical experiences were still pretty fun.  I'll never forget when we went to see ROTS, there was a huge line and there was this little kid in a darth vader costume running back and forth.  took off the helmet at one point and it was a girl!!  bwaaaaaaaahahahahahahahaahhaahaha

I never went to midnight premieres so maybe its best to avoid those.  and avoid this release altogether.

You know having Vader turn out to be Luke's mother would have been a much better twist.

Gendershock didn't do Metroid any harm now did it?

Are you guys with the bad audience in America, by any chance?  I worked at a movie theater and it got to the point where I refused to watch movies with any sort of audience.  I only watched my own screenings at midnight with  my friends or by myself.  This was around 2006 before I moved to Japan.

Aaaaand this is why you watch movies in Japan.  I've never even heard people eating popcorn despite all the empty popcorn boxes after the movie.  I love love LOVE going to movies in Japan.  :)

But I'm surprised you guys are even going to the theaters to watch this. :P

Yeah, I noticed that, too.  The dude named his poor son "Toshiro Lucas McWeeny".  This guy is anything but impartial.

BTW, TPM has finally dropped to "Rotten" status on Rotten Tomatoes.
