I am George Lucas :(

I can't help it.

In 1999 me and some college pals shot a movie. It was all shot in order, each scene getting one take, on a Hi-8. It was a hoot.

In 2003, I'd taken my VHS copy, digitized it and used Windows Movie Maker to make a DVD version. I made small edits to ease cuts between shots, static caused by the stop-and-go recording. Literally just a few second-long cuts, and I put a closing credits on it.

This weekend I kicked back with the old college buddy. He had the original Hi-8 tape that we shot a movie on back in 1999.  I said, SURE, I'd love to digitize from the master, and use Adobe Premiere to make a decent looking DVD.

I can't hep myself. I'm creating an elaborate opening. Rescoring it (in 1999 we scored it by dubbing to VHS and using one of the stereo channels to pump in music), color correcting scenes, rearranging some shots, and I CANT BELIEVE IT, actually shooting some new footage (two cutaways to hide bad jump cuts).

All this for an 11 minute horror-spoof shot on one night while half drunk 13 years ago.

I understand Lucas a little bit more now.

Set the good example. Release the original too. Remember it how it was so you so you can show what improvements time and skill (and sobriety) can bring over 13 years. Don't bury the past. SHARE IT.

Ironic given the purpose of this site, but that never occured to me. I'm sure I can fit two 11 minute films on one DVD. duh.

Heck, I might do three, and have the raw footage as well.

That's pretty funny. I'm sure your friends will appreciate seeing how it was, and maybe with the raw footage you could encourage future generations to make their own edits!

I'll admit: I did this in 2006 to four films me and my buds shot in high school. I made them the same way: in camera cuts, left-stereo channel to dub in music from a CD in some scenes, and filming my monitor with PowerPoint running for credits. I digitized the VHS tapes, but then I did re-editing, new music and sound, even new special effects. But I did include the originals too! :p

I've struggled with this a bit myself over the years. I compromised a lot on editing my first video in high school, rather than fight with my fellow interns in the edit bay. I finally got my director's cut almost five years later, but I did preserve the original edit.

I had a more thorny problem with a Terminator parody I did in college. The opening shot is a cheesy model of a post apocalyptic building with a airliner sticking out of it. This absolutely killed the comedy for me post 2001, even though it was innocently done 13 years prior. I lucked out in that I still had the camera masters, and found an alternate take of the model where the plane couldn't be seen. I edited that into the video, and problem solved. I did preserve the original though.

On the flip side of the same coin, I finished another video I had to abandon back in college by shooting new linking scenes and effects several years later. The driving force was to parody the Special Editions.

In a perfect world, I would keep adding crap to it every seven years to keep the joke going. ;)

Where were you in '77?

Let me guess - the original was "damaged"?  1999 technology held you back? You're only shooting what was your original idea, even though your buddies don't remember you ever mentioning anything besides the one film?

Spare us, dude.  We've heard it all before.  Start getting your pretzel logic ready.....

TheBoost ruined my early adulthood.

I'm totally going to do this with TRM.  In fact, I'm going to personally go to every house that downloaded it and burn the originals.

Also, I can't wait to start a Ric Olie account at originalboost.com

You know, I'd be interested to see TheBoost's film. Heck, all of your films. Mine are already on YouTube.

I like the one beating up the guy in shorts.

Oy, how this thread brings the desire to make a halfway professional film rushing back ...

That's the most inside joke of them all! My college used to have a rule that you couldn't wear shorts in any of the academic buildings, or even in the middle part of the campus. K-Town PD was going to be a full 30 minute episode of a fake TV show, but when I found out that it took an entire day to film the intro, I decided to write in a campus-centric joke and submit it as my full project. I got second place at our awards show! Out of two!

I can't wait to watch the whole thing. I added it to my Watch Later so I can appreciate it on my HDTV.
