The ANH:SE Redux Ideas thread (Radical Ideas Welcome). — Page 61

In regards to the planet the Death Star orbits:

I always felt it could just as well be Endor, as a sort of "Area 51" where the Empire constructs it's more secret projects.  If so, it would be a way of tying ANH to JEDI in a more story-esque way than simply the script ripping and editing techniques.

A couple of more ideas (one serious and one not-so-much):

(1) depending on what Ady (or whoever does another edit) does for JEDI:REVISITED, I know there was discussion that "Endor" is another planet similar to Yavin.  Would that mean that we would/should see a gas giant behind the planet?  Also, if "the forest moon of Endor (for lack of an actual name for the planetoid the action takes place on)" is the Empire's Area 51, would there be more construction going around both Death Stars (ie where they also build their super star destroyers or something along that line)?

(2) If Endor is a gas giant similar to Yavin, the forest moon would need a name.  This would probably fit more towards the Worst Edit Ideas thread... but would you call it Pandora?

Please don't hit me.

i would remove the name ENDOR altogether, and just have people refer to it as the "sanctuary moon", just as tatooine and hoth* are not refered to directly by name (*hoth system, not planet)

gas giant is a cool idea. I was wondering if the whole planet could be within some sort of nebulous cloud like NEW CAPRICA in BSG. absolutley hidden.

as pandora was mentioned, in ROTJ it could be good to have a flyover like the strip mining in Avatar, so the empire seems to be harvesting the planet for its materials.

Audio and video. The trick is to make it a private video, not public. We'll be able to see when you post the link, but nothing else should happen.

Tried that, and got blocked immediately!

Great edit!  The tiny distractions were removed and the scene ran without a change of mood or direction.  Well done!

I'll be the voice of dissent and say that it doesn't look cool. It's less convincing than the original.

Its the same model i made. maybe its the light condition.

Sure it is months late, but this looks perfect!  Any chance we could see a scene with the Death Star rotating towards Alderaan to fire, and stopping to fire?  We get lots of control room shots or the planet coming in range, it would be neat to see it from the outside.

I mean, from SPAAAAAAAACCEEE!

Maybe not a fly-over, but something akin to the montage of the child slaves in TEMPLE OF DOOM (ie something you could see being done in a similar style as to the filmmaking in the 1980's).

This probably belongs in the JEDI IDEAS thread.

All that mirrored stuff is really weird. My brain was screaming "THIS IS WRONG!" the whole time. The rest was also very interesting.

A couple of ideas popped into my head last night.

First off as much as I love Ben putting his glamour over the Stormtroopers guarding the tractor beam and simply walking away from them, for an alternate take it might add some action to the scene by having them open fire on him and he deflects the blasts with his saber.

We see him train Luke the move and we hear Han dismiss it but it would be a fitting repost to see a fully trained Jedi 'go against the real thing'.

In the same room, I used to have the vinyl Star Wars wallpaper.

It depicts the Ben and Vader duel taking place inexplicably on the razor thin tractor beam catwalk with Tarkin standing next to Vader.

Bizarre as that set up sounds the location would make for a more dramatic beginning of the duel.

It's dark, it has the mandatory death pit and it's generally more interesting than just some corridor.

So I propose that for an alternate take the duel could start there, move into a corridor and end just in front of the hanger giving three different locations to move into, from dark, grey and into the light where Ben will make his sacrifice and introduce Luke to his father and future nemesis.

Doable?

Desirable?

What do you guys and gals think?

Ben studies the data on the monitor readout.

                                     BEN

I don't think you boys can help. I must go alone.

                                     HAN

Whatever you say. I've done more that I bargained for on this trip already.

                                     LUKE

I want to go with you.

                                     BEN

Be patient, Luke. Stay and watch over the droids.

                                     LUKE

But he can...

                                     BEN

They must be delivered safely or other star systems will suffer the  same fate as Alderaan. Your destiny lies along a different path than mine.

The Force will be with you... always!.......

.........Besides, it's just around the corner.

It might be just around the corner from the ship (ironically) but not from the room they have just snuck into.

Remember we are talking in three dimensions here.

Ben doesn't know that until they get into that room and if he did and he just nipped out, dodged all the guards on the way in, switched off the beam and sneaked back, Leia would have ended up as pink glitter when the Rebel strike force finally managed to catch up with the station after searching around the cosmos for signs of obliterated worlds (assuming Vader didn't put the homing beacon on the ship the moment it landed).

If the fight was edited that way there could have been a lot of space covered that we wouldn't see between each location so it needn't be right on top of the hanger.

One presumes it's pretty close as we don't see Ben catch a train or take much in the way of elevators and he is a bit conspicuous (sure he could cloud the minds of many people who might notice an old guy in Jedi robes walking around but someone would notice him eventually if he has to travel a great distance).

So are you suggesting that in the duration it takes the gang to find out where Leia was being held, rescue her and escape the Garbage-masher, Ben went to the staff canteen and had his lunch and a cup of coffee?

You are being deliberately naughty and I like it.

No, if the way in is complicated it would still take as long to get there on his own but it could still lead out nearer to the ship.

Computer gamers will know what I mean.

The exit to a level may be close to the final boss stage but the entrance may take a lot of wiggling (think in three dimensions dear one) ;-)

This is also the case in the real world.

My house is near the Co-op but I have to walk a long elliptical path to get to it because some twit stuck his house at the end of our crescent.

If I could drop down outside his house from above I could get to the Co-op in about 2 minutes instead of about 30 minutes.

Sadly I lack the ninja skills.

I know you mean, I remember trying to get to the Dublin Hilton and passing it 6 times because of the oneway system,......but this is a movie and your corridor plan could not be explained to the audience, there is a passage of time and a sense of journey for Ben to the TB generator....and on the way back to the Falcon.

There are huge technical problems about making such a change which I fully appreciate but seeing as Lucas doesn't explain Ben's current route around the enormity of the battle station (just a little diagram and a line from Threepio added after the fact which doesn't actually say much if anything) geography isn't one that instantly kicks me in the face.

Storming the enemy fortress or navigating the labyrinth is a trope of myth and legend.

Ben takes a long journey to a place of power and his way out is through death represented by Darth Vader so having moving the end of the path the beginning matches the structure of myth where the way in is the way out :

I'd like to see an theoretical edit, having the duel start as the han/leia/luke flee to the falcon, and then continue during the tie fighter battle/death star escape. This was done in a trailer for MMO - Old Republic and is really dramatic.

Along Bingo's thoughts though, does luke ACTUALLY need to SEE obi-wan get killed though? If the fight begins far from the hangar and ends far from the hangar, could luke be seen to feel a tremour in the force?

I don't think he is adept enough yet.

He has to see to believe Ben dead to then sense him still alive through the eyes of faith.

"I can't believe he's gone" only works if he's seen him die before his eyes and yet still hears his voice.

Wait a second....Ben's death along with Luke finding his Aunt & Uncle murdered are the 2 main emotional building points of the movie, I know this is the 'radical' ideas thread but I think you 2 are on a wind up

That's why I'm not proposing changing it.

It's one "Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo" that shouldn't go.

I finally just went through all the pages of this thread yesterday.  There is some amazing work done here.  I'm really craving to see a radical new version of ANH.  Unfortunately so many of the pictures and videos have disappeared, I wonder what I am missing out on.

All mine are gone, I was getting an email every couple of days from youtube about copyright, so I eventually lost all mock-ups....damn the Blu-Rays

It could be edited to were Obi Wan is saying "Run Luke Run" while the actual duel takes place.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas
