In b4 "good riddance to that DNR-machine monster". For all its perceived flaws, there's a reason Lowry is often the go-to restoration company: the methods work. And they are still being refined. Much of their more recent work looks fantastic. Not every movie they did turned out like Star Wars or the Citizen Kane DVD after all. I for one think that a few of the Bond releases, while admittedly the series itself was hit-and-miss with restoration quality (which I still believe is more the fault of the studio), ended up fantastic in HD.
A Goon in a Gaggle of 'em
I didn't realize he was that old.
And I agree with bkev. Some of their releases were botched--Citizen Kane because it was an early experiment, and occasionally some other film like Star Wars but most of that is the fault of Lucas--but overall their results are excellent, and the proof of that is seen whenever you watch an old movie; most classic film restorations are by Lowry, and they usually look great.
May he rest in peace.
rest in peace.
and thanks for all the contributions to cinema and home video.
With all the talk about raising money for a Variety ad, why not raise money for a John Lowry Memorial Lecture on film preservation?
Having a group of people wanting to see the original forms of Star Wars contribute to a memorial to John Lowry and the sort of work he dedicated his expertise to would be irony enough get attention and may inspire a new generation of film restorers.
so sad :(
I grew up in the late 60s\early 70s - in Houston - where Gemini, Apollo. and Skylab were everything. I went to Ed White elementary school, for Christ's sake. Tonight I'll take a moment to reflect on, and deeply appreciate, Mr. Lowry's work in insuring future generations get to experience the wonder of the Apollo program the way I did. It was truly a magical time.
RIP sir, and thank you.
