Personally I find it very fitting, especially in the context of both trilogies.  I like how it ties the two characters together.  It's amazing how a title shapes the perspective of the film :)  I also liked Ronsters idea, but I would have to lean slightly more towards this one

So here is my "color-corrected" (meaning somewhat improved, but still quite lacking) version of the very yellow Star Tours source:

http://www.2shared.com/video/wtV9BeNg/star_tours.html

Check it out.  It shows what can be done in just an hour with crappy footage, a worse than novice editor, using non-intuitive software that crashed on him three time.  Imagine if a real pro tried his hand at this!  Also, I don't have that DVD with me right now, and I'm not actually sure it is a higher quality digital copy, but if it is, I could upload it and let someone who really knows what they're doing toy around with it.  Perhaps it can be made useful.

Just some input: I'd much rather have an HD version of this edit, even at the cost of keeping this material out of the final product.

What!?!  You must be crazy!!!  Actually, I don't know if I can even get any SD footage.  But remember that the deleted scenes are SD, so I don't know if we can go HD anyway.

Remember obi-wan said "there are always alternatives....."

what would be to stop you putting this 360p footage into a cockpit to make up the remainder of the picture or even as bingowings suggeested  on a video screen.... The footage is all POV anyway so I cannot think of any other use for it other than a POV cockpit sequence or out of a window.

I'm not pushing hard for it's inclusion but let's face it, there is not much else out there that could lighten the workload so don't discount it just yet....

Don't get too wrapped up in HD 1080p most people on the planet do not have the capability of even seeing anything at that resolution so infact you are narrowing your audience by choosing that option go figure....

Edit: although there is only so much you can also polish a turd

Well, I think I may one day try my hand at really fixing up the whole thing.  It will probably be a while, though.  I didn't realize how much good footage is actually available on the DVD at preserv.22web.net.  While the full ride is the same crappy yellow footage, only crappier, there are shots on the B-roll and a couple of other things that would be far easier to fix up.

Plus, I should give credit where credit is due...the DVD the guy sent me, while still being yellow footage, is definitely the highest resolution of the yellow footage I've found, and thus a color correction would go far.  So one day the whole thing can probably be preserved at a decent quality.

Ron, I agree, we can just use it in a cockpit.  And since the footage will be sped up anyway, I doubt it would be terribly noticeable that the detail is lower.

I know I've been really stuck on this, but there is good reason: Whatever we add to the ROTJ edit will largely be CGI or Johannus's models from a distance.  Star Tours offers a chance to get us close to the Death Star with actual model footage.  It's new, but it would better match ROTJ than probably anything we could contstruct.  And from the B-roll I think we can get two decent shots that would add a uniqueness to our edit.  I'll upload them when I get the chance.  Busy day ahead with work and all.

So I've been quite busy the past few days, and I had devoted much attention to seeking a way to include Star Tours footage.  I think it can be done, but I'm focusing on getting an updated script for MrInsaneA.  But for the time being, I hope that you, yes you, MrInsaneA, will go ahead and complete much of the rough edit.  Most of what we voted for has to do with the Battle of Endor, and if you are inserting pictures to give an idea of how changes should look, know that every picture you suggested passed the vote.  I'll get the script up soon.

They'll look fine in 720p HD as long as I can figure out how to rip the bluray properly so I don't keep getting annoying compression artifacts.  I could keep trying to rip, but I'm not sure which mt2s file has the deleted scenes.

Hey, I was thinking about you while working on the updated script.  Thanks for your efforts so far.  Things have been slow here, but I feel confident that you are chugging away at those deleted scenes.

I have been pretty intent on finding some useful Star Tours footage, but I'm going to give that a rest for now.  I still have ideas, but my diversion has brought the whole thread to a near standstill.  I need to get the script completed, and then I will send out the final vote, make assignments (assuming emergency powers of course ;) , and MrInsaneA will continue to work on the rough cut.

Which reminds me, I'm changing plans again.  Working with Excel, while nice for organization, made it difficult to insert and rearrange items (I'm working with Microsoft Office 2003 I'm afraid).  But I've numbered the whole script and changing the comments to be more specific of needed changes.  I'm also including all pictures we voted yes on (even the forest fire, which I strongly oppose because I see no way to make it work).  Even the pictures are numbered.  When an editor wishes to work on something, he simply says, "Hey, I'm working on lines xxx-yyy," or something like that to help keep track of progress.  The comments are numbered as well, so editors can also specify which effects they are working on by number.  I can color code the parts that are "under construction" to note what is in progress, what is partially completed (for instance, the sandstorm scene might be visually completed, but still will need dubbing), and what is completed.  Hopefully this is sufficient for everyone.

Ender,

Do we have a continuity supervisor?  We need to be careful.  I love the idea of doing this in parts, but we need to be careful Star Wars Uncut isn't remade.

Author

Well, I suspect I am coordinating most things, but for the most part, I don't anticipate this is a very secret project among the various editors.  If my plan works, the idea is that every time someone has something to share, even an incomplete effect, they should post it regularly in the other forum.  And from time to time, I will post things on this thread so that everyone's interest can remain high and many eyes can spot problems.  So essentially, we have many continuity supervisors.  Good question; I hope it all works out.

I still need a revised script for that...just sayin' :P

Had a test today.  Have a lot going on.  But I'll get it soon.  Seriously, most of the significant changes are with the Battle of Endor.  You'll have the script by...Friday I hope.  Putting the kids to bed right now, and then I've got chores :(

I hope things do get off the ground.... I've put alot thought into this and would hope a final cut results eventually,,, I would not mind even trying to do my own ideas too but that is not possible for me to pursue this at the present time.

I definitely understand, Ron.  I have to be honest, I like a lot of your ideas, and what I thought was impossible when we first started I now believe is indeed possible.  I imagine this edit to be rather close to the original story, and I think most people agree, but I think that we can continue to build off this first cut and take things further, even including stuff like you envision.  And I really believe you can develop your skills to be a fine editor like many on this site.  I hope you do continue to put forth the effort...when you've got more time and opportunity of course :)

I'm out of it for a little while, everyone gets delusions of grandeur.

My belated thoughts:

Good project! I've only read the first 5 pages of this, so sorry in advance if I repeat anything now or in the future or am otherwise clueless. What is the current working script? I see a link to a script in the early pages but do not know if it's been updated. If starting with Yoda scene, is there an intention to edit out Luke's glove?

6) I would have no problem if we never saw Max Rebo's band (sorry mrebo, if you read this thread).  Even when I was a child and scared to death of Jabba, I thought the band looked very fake, like stuffed animals I'd keep in my bed.

How...dare you!

I am totally for Lapti Nek and Max Rebo. Lapti Nek is a sleezier song than suggested alternatives, as others have noted. And if there is a desire to edit out fake looking denizens of Jabba's Palace, I think Max, Droopy and Ms. Snootles would not be anywhere near the first to go and it would end up being a fairly empty place in the end.

There is the issue of music playing as if merely a soundtrack and not actually being generated inside the palace. We can assume otherwise (from the dancing and whatnot), but cinematically it is a bizarre omission to not show the source of the music. The band adds character. And they appear only briefly.

If the only question is the realism of these particular characters shown for a few seconds, I can understand why some would want to remove them...I guess. But to remove the color they provide to the scene (beyond the literal blue, mind you) and omit a part of what is happening - which is otherwise interesting to show, seems shortsighted. I know I'm late to the party, but it looked like there was some room for another point of view.

What is the state of affairs for the Ewok battle? Any plans to use footage from Battle of Endor? There isn't a lot that could be used there, some battle preparation, brief shot of an ewok with a blaster, etc.

The blue elephant in the room.

I'm still not sold on the Max Rebo band, but maybe the idea of a grungier song in the palace may work.

Maybe someone could produce a demo.

A thought on Jabba's palace.  Jabba's throne room is pretty gross for a throne room.  Sure, he is a Hutt, but I'd imagine his throne room looking more like a brothel or a boudoir.  In the movie, it looks more like a honky-tonk country/western bar.

I wonder if the out of place feel of having the Max Rebo band in the movie would change if we re-labeled the throne room to a lounge?  I mean there are alcoves with dining tables in there.  It's a lounge.

Thoughts?

This is what I came up with and jaitea has done a version with a bit of mrebo in it

Re-Cut Lapti-Nek

Link below... Hope you like it, I tried to get rid of the close up dodgy puppet singer and make it work including some SE footage also. Short and sweet and I think it works ok.

http://www.mediafire.com/?ndfubkhrsa1m6ix

Theres also some footage of guys hitting drums in max rebo from the special edition and my thoughts on this were that this should be for the rancor entertainment and have some kodo drums for this for when Oola was actually in the pit rather than when the band is playing...

This would happen again when luke falls in also....

It might work but have not thought about it since

Yeah, I don't think Lando should die in the final battle, I think Han should, Lando should die during the Sarlacc sequence. My idea (that just came to me) is this: They plant the explosives in the shield generator but they don't go off. If they don't blow up the shield, the fleet would be destroyed and everyone would die, so Han sacrifices himself and detonates the bomb manually. This could coincide with Luke hiding in the shadows refusing to fight Vader, and Luke could feel Han dying and it could be the trigger that makes him go after Vader, thus eliminating the need for Vader to talk about Luke's sister and thus enabling the removal of the whole stupid sister subplot.

But I understand it's probably pretty late now and it would also be hard to pull off (though not impossible).

i still think my best idea yet was that Leia was lukes sister but luke never tells her because obi-wan told him not to do so and all the jelousy is gone from Han it also makes vaders death more sad because he knows he has a daughter but leia still does not know her father....

Leia being shot in the arm triggers Lukes rage

It's all in my last act re-structure and I'm still sad about it getting voted a no :(

Got voted a solid no though... I wanted to make a more mature ROTJ but this is not my edit

lol blue about harvesting loads of ideas i'm incapable of executing? Yeah why not....

I wanted to go with "Last of the Jedi" because yoda says it just before he dies and we don't see any jedi's return exactly so I liked that
