What kind of a degree do you have, -1?

got a B.S. (bachelor of science) in mathematics from state

college in houston, TX. emphasis on Numerical Analysis.

minored in: physics, computer science, and electrical engineering

==============================

i've had two jobs that i've actually used the degree at,

modelling space station physics at Hughes-Lockheed for NASA,

and mathematical radar modelling for the US government

at the Naval Airbase in maryland.

every other job, i just learned on the spot or had no

experience. the sales job was the best, because i

was a videogame addict, and knew about videogames

inside and out. i didn't even want to be paid, because

i got to play for free, and got the job because my friend

was a manager there...

my degree is still in the cardboard tube that the

college sent me, practically unopened. i've checked it once

and never looked at it again. i was an average

student with a 2.5 / 4.0 GPA, and 3.0 in my major.

the DEGREE IS USELESS, except as a checkmark

to get a reference. i've gone back to try getting

a masters degree twice, but lost interest, and

decided to self teach myself what i needed to know.

college was a waste of time for me, but i know

others that were much smarter, learned more, or had more fun.

i spent most of the time in the gameroom, and

playing videogames.. i never talked to people, professors,

or girls. it was just something to kill time doing.

i hated my original major of electrical engineering,

and flunked out with a 0.5 GPA after 2 years.

got kicked out by my parents, and was homeless

for a very short time.

i went back, because i had nothing better to do and

wanted to straighten out to accomplish something

with myself.

i liked math (ever since i was in grade school).

i lucked into computer programming, and that's

about the only useful skill i felt good about doing

although i'm mediocre at it.

i have NO respect for money, or real use for it,

i've got everything i thought i could want (a few

times over), and am now in the process of getting

rid of everything again.. i live in an apartment,

drive a 19 year toyota corolla (given to me

by a colleague for $1), have no furniture

except a futon, and basically live in a darkened

bedroom with 1 lamp (that i don't turn on).

everything else i own is packed away in

Now, I for one love little rabbits, especially white ones, cause they're cute little furry creatures, although I've heard some of them can be quite vicious indeed... How's everybody doing in this regard? Hopefully better.

That said, I'm not. I've been doing training for an at-home call servicing opportunity and been jerked around for the past three months. Studied, lost sleep, paid money I didn't need to, got equipment and am just being thrown into a mess of stuff.

Just insane. On top of this it really looks like my mom is about to be fired from her job. (It's been this way for over a year, constant threat of being fired/let go.) What the heck happened to the job market to make things so unbelievably cutthroat and dire? I know the economy is beyond terrible, I know everything tanked but to have everything become so completely cutthroat and impartial is insane.

So I've started doing a whole other batch of job applications (my daily thing) while on the phone and chat with this stupid servicing company (who never answers anything). I'm even to the point of writing some more crazy last-ditch letters to places/people who I really admire in the hopes that I might get some kind of response. (not that I ever really do)

I am just done with this whole thing. I did the film school thing and got chewed up by it. I know unemployment is what happens when you get out, but at this point I'm still just drifting about alone in the ocean.

How does one actually enjoy any part of being unemployed? I'm going nuts being stuck in one place with nothing to do.

sorry to hear about that.

yeah, my brother hasn't been working for the last

few months either. but its more of his own personal

choice also..

well, you have to keep trying.

i'm in a similar situation. so i know the feeling.

sometimes it seems like nothing is working.

but you have to keep trying or you'll never know.

I am just done with this whole thing. I did the film school thing and got chewed up by it. I know unemployment is what happens when you get out, but at this point I'm still just drifting about alone in the ocean.

well, you need to start working on all those

projects you used to wish you had time for.

that, or start keeping yourself busy and learn

new things to do.

i used to go back and forth with photography.

and lately, i hadn't done in quite awhile.

i met a girl that was a model, and of course,

my enjoyment of photography came back,

and we have a lot of fun doing shoots, and

other projects.

try something new, while you have the time.

when you get busy again, you might not have

the chance.

catch up on all those books you haven't read,

watch all those unwatched movies, catch up

on tv shows.. write a blog, draw some pictures,

paint, make some music... really, if you had any

hobbies before go back to them, or look into

new ones.. not everything is expensive or

requires money.

good luck.

Being stuck and feeling hopeless is the worst. I've spent this day making some calls in between posting here and reading the news. Anyone know of law jobs, intellectually engaging government jobs (heh), or something along similar lines in the Northeast or adjacent areas? :p You could always take some shots in the dark for media advisor positions with political campaigns. Any kind of small breakthrough in film - if that still is your chosen field - can make a difference in the long run. Worst thing is letting your resume waste away.

The blue elephant in the room.

Agreed, good to see you back CA. I managed to shave off a year in college due to way, way, way too many AP courses in high school. (Don't do AP Biology! Ahhhh!!) Not that it really helped me any, save for making my debt less. ;)

I'm taking bits and pieces of the films I shot in school and am going to try and pull something out of the mess to learn Windows editing programs. Fun. There's nothing better than learning a new editing software on a demo. Again. Crap.

Plus a series of reviews that is kinda turning into more of a dissertation...I go to make one little blog post and it comes out several hours later, edited many times over as a part critical part radical film dissertation almost.
