@Sharkiesf - FYI, 2000p is techinically about 4096x2160 (depending on the format and is referred to as 4k because it has 4000 lines of horizontal resolution (instead of naming it by the usual vertical resolution).

4k in theory is the limit of data that can be extract from a film print.  Some manufacturers will be bringing 4k HDTVs to market this year (and showed them this week at CES ( http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2012/01/ces-4k-tv-sets-make-their-debut-minus-the-hoopla.html ).

BluRay players that are 4k capable and can upscale 1080p to 4k should appear in 2013.

Mind you I don't think Dark_Jedi will get anything reasonable trying to hit 4k from the GOUT source. ;-)

Ah!

I was off in my little rant world lol i meant to say 4k

I saw a movie recently at an AMC that was of a 4k projector, i swear i saw peoples pores. Just like when 1080p first came out there are some things that just shouldn't be seen in HR ha ha

thanks for the correction i feel dumb :-P

I agree about 4k being the limit to digital capture but i have this 5D way of looking at it...

1D...There’s seeing it on old fashioned projection 35mm quality depends on the equipment and theater, but its light passing through film in a very lossy way

2D... Home medium in SD such as VHS, LD, and DVD

3D... HR 1080p, 4k etc all within the digital realm

4D... Capturing the film strip in some sort of lossless format ie holographic tech or some X tech we haven’t discovered yet. Film is analog after all which I find ironic unless it was filmed digitally, thus digital capture isn't necessary

5D... Somehow reproducing the film as if you were standing right there seeing it with your own eyes but in movie format.

Sorry to get all metaphysical but what your able to see is limited to your vision not the medium its delivered by. What im getting at is the term "HD" is too arbitrary... HD would be ultimate, and ultimate it watching the action for real with your own eyes. I always felt that they should have hyped it HR and not HD... ehh but that me lol

Just an opinion but there are many more out there who know more than me and would call me an idiot.

First of all, wow, it's hard to believe these are sourced from the GOUT. Second, is it possible to apply the settings selectively? Like apply the stronger jaggies reduction only to the shots where they are notoriously bad? While there is definitely some detail loss and it would definitely be undesirable to apply this to the whole film, it's not as bad as I thought it would and those jagged shots of R2 would probably benefit from it.

Actually, the jaggies are in every single shot of the movie, more or less. I worked a lot on finding settings that would reduce the jaggies but preserve as much detail as possible, and considering how much loss of vertical resolution there would be in applying more reduction, I won't do it and I think DJ agrees with me on that.

When you see those small jaggies left, think about how reduced they are compared to the source!

Yeah, but there's a reason that whenever the jaggies are brought up, this shot of R2 is shown, because it has the worst jaggies, so while your current script eliminates the jaggies in most shots, some still remain in this shot and probably a handful others, so what I was asking was, would it be possible to only apply the stronger setting to those shots only? I'm not saying you should do that either, just asking if it would be possible to do.

@Harmy:

Of course it is possible, like anything with avisynth! But believe me, after so much analyzing of these movies, I can tell you those jaggies are everywhere. I just chose that R2 shot kind of randomly.

Even if it hadn't been hard to do what you're saying, it would create inconsistency since it doesn't only remove jaggies in those shots but also grain and detail. Even in the R2 shot, detail is removed when jaggies is. The current script will create a consistent result with enough jaggies removed to be much more watchable, and just wait until you see what the dirt remover does!

Anyway, here comes another little teaser. A couple random shots from ESB and ROTJ, unprocessed GOUT compared to the script.

Trying not to get off subject, but 4k is considered the limit of detail on film.  That has to do with the grain (individual particles in the film that make up the picture) that while physical bits are pretty much the analog equivalent of the pixels.

You could digitally scan for more detail, but you won't get anything more out of it.  So 4k is the end for digital transfers.

All they can do after that is to find some lossless codec to eliminate the loss from digital compression.

That said, I'm glad I haven't actually got around to burning the v3 discs yet.  D_J keeps surprising me with what he pulls out.

Wow, that does look impressive.

How does it compare to a hardware solution? Had you started with the same data would your scripts still pump out something noticeably better than it would've looked after one of the higher-end chips in something a consumer would buy got done with it? Like the Qdeo or Anchor Bay chips in the Oppo BD players?

You_Too,

you might want to try backing off the sharpness just a bit. Here's a comparison pic of what it ends up looking like, minus your awesome colors of course:

yours on the left, mine on the right. Notice how the oversharpening of the GOUT is being amplified by your script especially in the top dome panels.

@Stinky-Dinkins:

I haven't seen any high-end chip upscale results myself. My own BD-player is an LG without any of the chips found in Oppo's players. On the other hand I think a high-end chip would just try and make a smooth upscale with every detail intact, which means even the jagged edges.

In the script we're using an upscale method which involves an antialiasing filter, plus at the end of the script another plugin adds some of the raw detail and grain back in the antialiased video. I doubt even those high-end chips would be able to do all that. Maybe there is some professional hardware that could do better, but not any upscale chip I think.

@g-force:

In my opinion, your pic looks more filtered on the edges, like, more antialiased or something. In my script I've tried to balance between preserving detail and removing jaggies, and I don't think it's oversharpened, but that the slight ringing around edges is just more visible because of it being upscaled.

Due to how low the vertical resolution of the GOUT is, I don't think it can look much better. I'm still trying to improve the script though, but I won't go as far as to make it look like your pic. No offense of course!

No offense taken. Don't think I menat that you caused the ringing, it's in the original GOUT due to the fact that the original GOUT is oversharpened. It's just that your (good) sharpening has amplified the original (bad) sharpening.

@g-force:

Yeah, that's something we have to live with. But the GOUT looks so much better this way even with it's downsides.

If the burnt-in subs are finalized yet, I'd like a screengrab of Greedo's two-line subtitle in SW, and one in ROTJ of the "You may have been a good smuggler..." line.  I don't care if the image scaling/color grading issues aren't resolved yet--if the font size and placement are final, that's good enough for me.

For right now we are not taking requests for certain scenes or parts, everything right now is preliminary, we still need to fully test everything so please don't ask(at least not yet) we will be able to start serious testing hopefully as early as mid to end of next week, all we can show for now is a few screens here and there.

also for those of you who really are not interested in this project of upscaling the GOUT video for a Blu-ray release(and you know who you are) please do not post in this thread acting like you do, because you made it pretty clear in other threads and posts that you do not, Thanks for your cooperation.

Also nice to see you dropping by Doctor M, always love chatting with you, and picking your brain lol.

Great to hear!  By the look of things, it should actually be able to finish rendering movies a few minutes before you start.  You'll be left with all this free time... and a brand new computer to waste it with...

Congrats DJ!

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

Thanks Guys, like i said, this is my very first time ever building my own PC, sure I have added things before, but never building the whole thing lol, I am actually liking it a lot, it is actually still sitting open(like in the picture) on the table right now, I keep looking to see if I can hide the cables more but I am pretty certain there is no more I can do, You_Too showed me pictures of "clean builds" and there were some of my actual case lol, so I wanted to do as good as I possibly could.

I have to admit though, I am a little nervous about the firing up lol, I surely hope I don't see sparks and flames, and I am also old school when it comes to CPU cooling, I have always used big ass fans lol, this is my first time with water cooling.

So very soon You_Too and I can really get things rolling and finish this BLU V2!

You might want to space out those hard drives a bit for better cooling but yeah, we are all drooling, thanks DJ...:)

I'm going to go for a walk, maybe then I won't be so jealous of DJ's rig...
