In the comic book adaptation there was a small Rebel outpost (which possibly tended to the generator station) which is destroyed by the probe droid to cover it's tracks, the loss was put down to a Wampa attack.

I thought it was a good idea when I was ten but without the Wampa sub-plot the effect would possibly be to bring more attention to itself.

It never made the movie so I guess it was dis-reguarded as irrelevant .... Looks like they had enough problems just doing the battle footage without adding anymore in.... The fact the probe discovers the shield was enough to convey the message and lead to the invasion.

It just fell over on the Invasion, I never thought about it that much until I pulled the footage apart.... Do you think it would help to have distinguishing marks on which group of AT-AT's you were looking at? So you would know where you are in the battle somewhat because it is all snow and blue sky....

Actually this WAS in the script but was cut. It occurs as the probe droid find the shield generator but then detects a Rebel sensor Station 38 (like the ones that Luke and Han were putting out at the beginning of the movie, which you don't see... lol "sensors are in place I'm going back") and the probe ends up destroying it. So when the scene cuts to the interior of Echo Base where there guy says "Sensors have pick up something Zone 12, moving east" there was suppose to be some smoking ruin of a sensor station as the probe was masking it's trail unsuccessfully... Here it is from the ESB script:

 HAN

It isn't friendly, whatever it is.
Come on, Chewie, let's check it out.

				RIEEKAN
Send Rogues Ten and Eleven to
		station three-eight.

EXT. HOTH - SNOW PLAIN - DAY

The dark probe robot moves past the smoldering ruins of station three-
eight and down a ridge toward the Rebel base. It raises a large
antenna from the top of its head and begins to send out a piercing
signal.

The probe droid has spotted Chewbacca who, not thirty feet away, has
popped his head over a snow bank. Instantly, the probe robot swings
around, its deadly ray ready to fire. But before it can get a shot
off, it is hit from behind by a laser bolt, and explodes in a million
pieces.
