I wanted to contribute an idea. While it may be nearly impossible to find original 35mm prints of sufficient quality, perhaps someone could obtain '97 SE prints, as these appear for sale much more often on places such as this other forum:

These obviously wouldn't be as useful as the originals, but a '97 SE copy in HD would be much easier to (Forgive me, I'm lacking a better word...) despecialize than the 2004 HD broadcast. Not to mention, there could hypothetically be potential to telecine at a higher resolution that 2k.
