Lucas' Red Tails — Page 5

The fact he's heard of us is pretty neat indeed... this makes me wonder if he's ever seen Revisited (since of all the fan edits, that and Phantom Edit are the most famous of them all).

none of this is surprising.  for someone who claims to 'not care' what the fans think, he sure always seems mindful of the fans that criticize him.  apologists everywhere are hooting and hollerning over their hero 'going against the grain, stickin to his guns'.   whatever.

someone mentioned that lucas went on the daily show and said red tails was 'the closest thing to episode 7'  - unles he was asked, wtf was he even bringing star wars into the conversation !?

as for mccallum, I noted that he was silent so far, unfortunately it didn't last and we got to put up with his fawning again.  and wtf does he mean 'he has now completed everything he wanted to do as a filmmaker (if you want to even call him that)'.  i guess those 'art films' apologists have been waiting 40 years are not gonna happen.  im shocked, shocked!

the fact we are hearing so much from lucas and about lucas instead of the remaining cast and crew just reinforces my suspiscion that everyone else was a puppet.

my preference would be to have the OOT, even if it helps him finance 'making' more garbage.  but if lucas is not making anymore movies, great- cinema just became a better place.

It's funny and sort of endearing how in GL interviews he always ends up ranting to the poor interviewer, like the interviewer is his bartender or something.(I'm sure the studio reluctance was pure racism and had nothing to with his non-star wars box office track record. Cameron, Spielberg, Fincher, Ridley Scott, Tarantino and everyone else could NEVER pitch Red Tails and get it made. Whuh?)

funny, maybe... but not endearing to me - more like repulsive, which is why i don't watch (does he still feign contempt and roll his eyes when talking about 'hollywood').  these are all just to dispense coded talking points for the sycophants so be suckered in and frame arguements (in political terms, its called a 'dog-whistle' cuz only certain targeted groups can pick-up on it).

its no different then when he was blabbing on and on about how episode III was too dark and scary and no studio would dare make it cuz no one would watch it.  riiiiiiiiiiiiiight

thats how it is these days with LFL.  30 years ago, lucas was a lazy ass and would just say 'don't worry, we'll take care of it in the editing room, lets just move on'.  now, he is even more lazy and says 'i'll take care of it in the interview room'.

“On the Internet, all those same guys that are complaining I made a change are completely changing the movie,” Lucas says, referring to fans who, like the dreaded studios, have done their own forcible re-edits.

Yeah, it's ironic isn't it? but you brought this on yourself.

“I’m saying: ‘Fine. But my movie, with my name on it, that says I did it, needs to be the way I want it.’ ”

It doesn't matter when it says Directed by Irvin Kershner and Richard Marquand on your fan-edits.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

I thought this was the Red Tails thread.  Of course the official Lucas bashing thread was locked, but we could always start a new one.  Frankly I have high hopes for this film.

Only so much you can discuss about a movie that isn't out just yet. ;)

I'm not sure I'm going to read that article.  I think my blood pressure will skyrocket if I do.

I'm already seeing fallout.  All kinds of posts blaming the "haters" for killing Star Wars.  Newsflash guys: He wasn't going to make 7-9 anyways.  Now he just has a new excuse for why not.

So, Locu$t has said Red Tails is what Episode VII would have been if it had been made. Okay, let me think this through ...

Red Tails in about a group of black fighter pilots ...

Gungans - based on obvious racist black stereotypes - are the SW Universe's version of the black race ...

OMG! Episode VII would have involved a squadron of Gungan starpilots! Oy vey, that would have been pure putz!

The logic flaw in that argument is the current Clone Wars series, and that live action show waiting in the wings. Lucas won't be done with Star Wars any time soon.

hmmm, I saw the banner ad on the main page.....so now lucas is going to have an 'interview' with oprah?

This 'interview' would have been sycophantic fluff as it were, but if this is her first trip to skywalker ranch, she is really gonna fall head over heals and feel like she is in Paradise.

this is a huge scoop for lucas, oprah has a huge audience even though this show is on that new cable network.

i doubt lucas will blab about studios and art films and star wars.  he'll push the whole 'its a tribute to the heart and courage of the tuskegee airmen'.

what will be interesting is if he still pushes the nonsense about red tails being a 'landmark' and a potential 'turning point' for 'black cinema'.  Try and bait Oprah into saying that the movie and the production reminds her of The Color Purple.  As I mentioned earlier, I rolled my eyes at this and it appears scores of other people have also really taken offense to it and are on to lucas' act.  sad really, he tried hard to push the whole 'studios are racist', but his naked (and disingenious) pandering and patronizing may backfire in a bad way.  especially if the reports of the film being nothing more than another pearl harbor are true.

would also be interesting to see if the other cast and crew are interviewed.

I didn't realize that Lucas' girlfriend was black. Is it bad that I think that's why he finally pushed this movie through?

Yes.  Sometimes it's bad to be right.

Like I didn't know until I read the article, and suddenly everything made sense.

We need to make a chart that shows his movies and the state of his relationships as he was making them. This "naive" filmmaking doesn't sit right with me, I think its a deliberate modern thing.

I hope bringing those two blowhards together doesn't cause the universe to implode.

I'm actually looking forward to Mark Hamill's new film, more than this one* (*meaning, I'm actually not looking forward to this one at all). ;-)

I hope at least Hamill's film gets a theatrical release and doesn't go straight-to-
video. :-/

I don't care anything about Red Tails, but what the heck is that? It looks weird in a bad sort of modern low budget sorta way, but Mark looks like he gets to ham it up so I'm in. (and that hair?) Plus the trailer has one of the best songs ever so...it can't that bad can it?

This reminds me of the Newsradio plotline where Jimmy tries to get Lisa and Dave back together because they do better work when they are "doing it."

You'd think George Lucas wrote and directed Red Tails himself based on that article.

Is the director of the film or the stars doing the talk show rounds at all?

The Rick McCallum interview on Collider is packed. He goes into a little of everything like how ILM was so busy with other projects they had to use a bunch of different studios around the globe to get the effects done. There's also this:

Do you think we’ll ever get the original trilogy and the prequels without any changes on Blu-ray, or is it never gonna happen?

McCallum: I would have to answer that officially it’s never gonna happen, but you never know with George. It’s one of the constant things that—let’s put it this way, it changes always. You never know.

Yeah I mean personally, as I’ve said many times on the site I have no problems with George changing the films, I just think it would be great if he would release the originals and that way everyone could have it, but that’s just me.

McCallum: I know, but I understand that completely. It’s just a question I can’t answer. Obviously I have my own personally feelings, I hope that he does it, but I don’t have major arguments with him about it. I think that’s a decision he has to come to on his own as time comes by.

Saw a piece on CNN today where they talked to a couple of the real guys, and they're happy with the film. Strip away all the hyperbole, and that is what really matters in the end.
