Taxi Driver.............Seeing all these ordinary people who obviously weren't extras walking down the street wearing these old clothes really give the film a really retro feel, and upon the first few minutes of initial viewing, you can tell what decade this was filmed in.

I don't nit-pick you guys too often, but if I may;  Taxi Driver was filmed in 1975, released in 1976.  It's not retro - it's original.  The Indiana Jones films, Super 8, Catch Me If You Can, Apollo 13, etc - those have a retro feel.

Well said.

I watched Rocky today, and I had almost forgot how great it actually is. While I like most of the sequels, I feel that the first had a quality to it that was missing in the others.

I don't watch Rocky for boxing at all, it's the characters. Sylvester Stallone has made some pretty bad career decisions over the years, but this movie proves he has the chops.

When compared to the other movies which almost feel like superhero movies, this movie is fairly quiet. It's very character driven.

The film is so gritty, and has moments. It's hard to describe what is so good about this movie.

I think the sequels had good moments. Rocky II and Rocky Balboa are about as close to the quality of the original as you can get. Rocky III and IV were both enjoyable, but they don't have much to them.

In the end, we relate to Rocky the most in the first film. He's a nobody, whose shot at greatness is past him, or so we think.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Slumdog Millionaire - I really like Danny Boyle's directing style. The advertising for this film always struck me as really weird ("feel good movie of the year", for example, when it is actually quite depressing throughout). If I hadn't already been fond of Boyle, I admit I probably never would have watched it. The dance number during the credit sequence is extremely out of place too. The movie kind of leaves you in a certain state, then the nonsensical dance number pops up and destroys it. Very odd choice.

Cemetery Junction - Wow, hard to believe it was directed by Ricky Gervais. I was very impressed.

I take it you're not familiar with Bollywood. =P

Finally saw Super 8 (or Video 8 as the other half keeps calling it) and I loved it but he didn't. Four reels from me.

Why does he call it Video 8?

Though it would be a good title for a sequel set in the eighties, or High 8 if the kids changed their attitude to drugs when they got older.

I was really surprised how much I enjoyed it. I really only saw it in theaters because my teenage cousins wanted to see it (and they are from out of town so I never see them).

Ha! That was pretty much the reaction me and my entire film class had to the film.

It's weird.

Shakespeare in Love 8/10

All around enjoyable film. I was able to keep the fact that it won best picture in 1998 at the back of my head and enjoy for what it is. Now that I'm finished... Really Academy?! This beat Saving Private Ryan and the Thin Red Line?! Really?!

The King's Speech 10/10

Great film. Not the best of 2010, but really very great.

The Help 8/10

Great performances and a solid plot, though I thought some things were played a bit too lightly. I think there should have been a bit more emphasis on Viola Davis' character in the second half of the film because she somewhat falls into the background even though she is the best part of the movie.

I like to think that 8mm is the sequel.

Since they're like poetry, what with the rhyming and all, I find that I only need to watch three out of the six films.

What about Super16?

That's much more logical.

And then the Sequel to that would be Super35

and then Super70

8mm would be the prequel.

Then they could do some 19th century back story called Oil on Canvas.

Then the "trying to cash in on the franchise" modern reboot down the line called High Definition 1080i video. The title High Definition 1080progressive video will be used for the directors cut. The "progressive" spelled out because having a 'random' "i" somewhere is okay with the masses(according to the studio) . Studio execs will be saying the 'random' "p" will confuse them. By this time the difference between interlaced and progressive scan are no longer selling points. Due to progressive being the standard for such a long time.....

You could have a British version set in the 1914 featuring boy scouts and a junior girl guide and call it Box Brownie.
