Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released) — Page 124

You know,  It really does say something when you are watching a workprint and you forget you are watching a workprint.

I can't say enough how good Lukes light saber  blade looks.  I know Harmy put a lot of time in some of these "little"changes like the gost Luke but it really does make a huge difference.   Taking it to a another level.

Another one is the blue lights restoring them to the green color on Vader's belt.

Harmy I'm so excited about this new version. :) Any chance I could get a PM to see the wp?

Thanks for the PM. It looks incredible. The only thing that stuck out for me was the orange sun during the Binary Sunset. It looks too crisp and almost pasted on, it just needs softening very slightly.

A small niggle. The rest of it is bloody amazing. This is what Lucasfilm should've put on the BluRays - it's stunning!

Keep up the excellent work.

Why would you ever "soften up" anything in an edit that was part of the original film? Weird. Guess what BluRays look sharp.

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

Harmy, there's an alternative to the Saturation setting which is called Vibrance (it's a color correction filter available in Photoshop, AfterEffects and Premiere, although not before CS4, I think). The difference between it and the normal saturation is that it only increases the saturation of colors which have a low saturation. On the other hand areas that already have a high saturation to begin with don't get boosted any further.

This might help to avoid oversaturated artifacts appearing in some image parts.

(Actually the AfterEffects version of this filter has both sliders, so that you can lower the overall saturation with the Saturation slider, while adding back the color with the Vibrance slider)

HERE's a comparison between the two.

Hi Harmy...gotta say you've mastered the craft in blending out the SE additions....dewback scenes ('look sir...droids!' & outside the cantina) are seamless....fantastic job.....transitions between the removed Jabba scene work flawlessly.

Following are a few screen grabs:

Scene (A) the crushed blacks in Sandcrawler....gone

Scene (B) I'm afraid the Orange sun doesn't look as realistic as the higher one

Scene (C) The shadows look a bit green to me

Scene (D) But you're shadows look fantastic here compared to V1 (& the BD), note the GOUT is very similar to you're V2

Scene (E) This shot is definitely a lot sharper than V1...but landspeeder has lost colour a bit....jarrs in next scene when the colours are back

Scene (F) Shadows are green again

Overall I think everything is looking f**king fantastic.....definitely improving on V1....cant wait for the next part

@Laserschwert. Thanks that vibrance effect sounds perfect. I have Premiere CS4 but don't remember ever seeing this effect there. I'll have to take a look.

EDIT: Nope, couldn't find it. And the Premiere CS4 help gave me no  result. And it seems to be a part of CS5, which won't work on my 32bit system... :-/

@Jaitea: Thank you, that is very helpful!

As to the 1st sunset shot, the one in the WP is long out of date, I have since reworked it completely:

Curious: are we gonna be seeing a making-of ppt for this version?

Yeah I believe vibrance was introduced in photoshop CS4, but not in premiere & after effects until CS5.  There are a few color correction plugins that will do the same thing, but they may be relatively expensive.

*Edit: Harmy, this may not even be an option because I've never used Premiere, but the new Premiere Elements 10 has vibrance controls and still runs on 32 bit systems.

Agreed on the sunset. The orange in the one sun looks much more "natural" now

If there are plugins that could assist Harmy, maybe the members here could help defray the costs.  I'd be willing to contribute a bit.  Just a thought.

Actually I suggested the use of vibrance in some post long ago. It would probably give a much better result than just raising saturation. There is a vibrance script for avisynth as well, in case Premiere doesn't have it.

A script wouldn't really help, since it would have to be used very selectively and it would be crap not being able to see the results right away.

Yeah you're probably right. But I know After Effects have vibrance. I don't know if it can be applied selectively though, since I haven't used AE much.

Again, the same problem, it's only in AE since CS5, which won't work on my computer.

But don't worry about it, guys, I think I can do it without it :-)

i just got done watching the work print and i am super excited.  I however noticed that there are some scenes that have been brightened alot and thus have elevated black levels.  The blacks look grey and creates the effect of looking through wax paper.  It probably wouldn't be noticable if you adjusted your monitors settings though.  I can point out the scenes if you are interested in fixing them.

also i like the warmer color pallete but in some scenes it has made characters faces harder to see.  mostly lukes and owens faces when they come out to buy the droids.  however if this was present in the original film then i guess it is correct.

but overall it is a vast improvement to v1.  any prediction on when part 2 of the work print will be done?

also i was wondering when you do esb and rotj v2 will You_Too be providing you with the color corrected blu ray footage?

Where's my damn medal?

Sure, I tried to avoid that for the most part and in some cases, I opted for it over the crushed blacks but if there are any distracting cases I may not have noticed, I'd sure like to know about them :-)

Yeah, I'm not quite happy with that, but the loss of detail in faces in that scene seems to be more due to some kind of DVNR applied to the 2004 master and it's more visible here due to it being brighter rather than warmer. Not much I can do, I'm afraid.

I try to avoid predictions now because in the past, I was usually wrong.

also i was wondering when you do esb and rotj v2 will You_Too be providing you with the color corrected blu ray footage?

Nothing's been decided yet. I'd of course appreciate if You_Too could provide that for me but I'd also understand if he doesn't want to.

i'll get those scenes with the bright black levels for you ASAP

couldn't you use the 2004 hdtv footage when you see uncle owen and lukes faces when they are buying the droids?  might look odd though when spliced in with the other footage

That wouldn't help, it was in there too.

are you talking about the dvnr smearing?

I guess that's not what i have a problem with because i can see uncle owens and lukes faces much better in the 2004 hdtv broadcasts.  must be the colors instead

Harmy, in the scene where the sandtroopers are checking the doors for the droids there is alot of shake in that background.

I know you cant help where the floating droid used to be but that background looks like it moves around independently from the foreground.

Love the Greedo scene!

The colors look ok for the most part. I will point out that in the first shots of the blockade runner soldiers running around there is a pink and cyan hue to the walls. I guess this was a result of you trying to get the uniforms more blue?

I know you are going to work on the desert scenes some more and other people have made those points.

I dont know if its a problem inherent to the blu rays but the quality seems to jump around in places, and I am not just talking about GOUT sources or fixes etc. Maybe some shots just werent focused as well as others.

Keep up the good work!
