Jaws the Revenge: Off the Cutting Room Floor Preservation (Released)

<span style=“white-space: pre;”></span>Jaws The Revenge was known as the worst Jaws film and one of the worst films in history. Occasionally, you would only see this film on late night Television to fill time slots. Some of those channels were AMC along with BBC (in the UK) and HBO. All three of these channels aired Jaws the Revenge, but not the one you saw on VHS or Laserdisc. It was longer and contained different scenes and a whole different ending.

<span style=“white-space: pre;”></span>HBO was the first to show this version in it’s true uncut form after the film was released on home video. Then in the 90’s BBC-1 aired Jaws the Revenge and it was open matte, exposing all of the shark’s mechanics and it was also fully uncut. Then, in 2004, AMC had ‘Jaws Night’ which was a special night of nothing but all 4 Jaws films. When Jaws the Revenge aired, it contained an extended intro, deleted scenes, and the original uncut ending. Since then, Jaws the Revenge has never been shown uncut.

<span style=“white-space: pre;”></span>In 1999, GoodTimes released Jaws the Revenge on both DVD and VHS, it was the first Jaws film on DVD. The GoodTimes version contained the ending that Universal had forced into all home video releases but one extra scene of Ellen steering ‘Neptune’s Folly’ while Michael was preparing the zapper to kill the shark. When Universal released Jaws the Revenge on DVD in 2003, that scene was absent. Now, in 2012, I am going to combine all these versions together to make one long, fully uncut, complete preservation of Jaws the Revenge.

So you HAVE all of these sources?! Incredible! I'd love to see some of the open-matte shots you refer to. Jaws movies and the makings of always interest me.

I wonder how well put together the rumored Blu-ray will be. Rumor is that 3 will even be in 3D!

Yes, I have all of them, took at least a good 5 years to get all of them though.

I'll include the open-matte shots on the Bonus Features when I upload it to MySpleen. The Jaws 3D Blu Ray, from what I have heard, has been confirmed in 3-D.. fingers crossed!

This film has always confused me with all of it's different versions. I still haven't even figured out which cut is the true theatrical version.

I have the GoodTimes and Universal DVDs, I used to have the AMC cut recorded on a DVR years ago but for some reason I never burned it onto a DVD before I wiped everything off of there.

I've always wanted to see the BBC cut though, it sounds hilariously bad with all of the exposed effects.

I don't see how it could be more hilariously bad than it is already! LOL

You do have a point, lol. I've just always been curious to see the open matte version though, I just can't believe that anyone would show a version of any film to the public with all of the mechanical effects plainly visible.

Hi again everyone, I need your help. I am stuck between using the Goodtimes DVD as the main video source or the Universal DVD. Below is a comparison of how it will look beside the deleted footage.

The Universal DVD MPEG-2 file is Progressive scan and Anamorphic Widescreen which results in better quality. It is 29.97fps.

The GoodTimes DVD MPEG-2 file is Progressive Scan and is Widescreen (2.35:1 Image put into a 4:3 display, but I cropped it to Anamorphic format). It is 24fps.

The GoodTimes version looks closer to the Deleted Scenes (When color correcting is added) but it is in 24fps, which can be converted to 29.97 but it will look jittery and might cause ghosting.

I am using Sony Vegas Pro 9 to edit this, so if you know any tips in SV that could help me, please do so.

I'd use the Universal and try to find a middle ground of quality between the deleted scenes and the film itself.

Have you seen the (very high quality) HD version that was showing on Spike  just recently? Wondering what version that is, maybe you can use it for something?

The versions of all 4 films that just came on Spike were also on one of the HD movie channels around the time of the 35th anniversary, though I can't remember which one. They were commercial free with a small watermark periodically appearing onscreen being the only logo.

Use the Universal disc. The transfer looks superior to that of the Goodtimes release. Just use the Goodtimes release for the additional scene you mentioned. I'd also like to recommend to have to viewers choose which ending they like to see via seamless branching.

ThiefCobbler4ever, which endings are you talking about? I can have it go about 3 ways if I let users choose. And how would I go about doing that, through my DVD authoring program?

1. Shark blows up (DVD Ending), Jake Lives

2.Shark get's stabbed, Jake dies.

3. Shark get's Stabbed, Jake Lives

Are you referring to how the shark dies? Or just the general ending, Jake living or getting killed by the shark?

Yeah I saw the Spike, sadly, I cannot export in HD from the DVR. It's the Universal version. If any of you know how to export it in HD, that would be awesome.

I would say that it depends on your DVR, how to get it in Full quality. If there is nö normal Way, maybe you could Open the DVR, pull the HDD Plug, and use the HDD in a normal Computer. Depending on the System the HDD is formatted (ext3 / ntfs / fat32 ...) it may Be a Bit difficult Regarding Drivers, but you could use a Ubuntu live Disc. That Way you may Be able to get the Complete Movie from HDD to pc...

I have a DirecTV DVR, so I'm not really sure about that. I would mess with it, but I just got it in time to record the Jaws films. I could capture a 720p source from composite (Red, Green, Blue) but I would have to get a special capture device for this operation.

Alright, I've been reading a little more into the different endings and I'm still confused.

Was the shark impalement/Jake dies ending only in test screenings theatrically or was it in the general release theatrical version as well, and was the exploding shark/Jake lives ending shot for the general theatrical release or for the home video version?

The ending with Jake getting killed/impalement was in all US Theatrical Versions, but in the European versions, it was the one that is seen on the DVD.

The 'Shark exploding' ending was added for the overseas because of the test audiences didn't approve of Jake's death, but that was not the case for the American version.

All DVD/VHS/Beta/Laserdisc releases are using the European 35mm print.

Well, I mean you have to viewer choose any of the 3 endings.

One of my Jaws discs had all of the JTR "deleted scenes" cropped from the AMC airing.
I remember trying to crop it to 2.35 and something turning up improperly. The framing seemed far too tight.
Also, every HD airing (in the US, anyway) has been cropped to 1.85 for all 4 films, including the pay services.

What actually happened to this project? Are there any plans to release it in the future? I've checked on MySpleen and it doesn't seem to be there.

Perhaps the film was just so bad that nobody could look upon it anymore.

That’s impossible, even for a computer.

I had no idea anyone was still interested in this project. Yes, it was finished and I combined the Goodtimes DVD with both BBC-1 and AMC footage to make a completely UNCUT and THEATRICAL presentation of "Jaws: the Revenge".

I'll try and find the DVD files and might upload it if my connection allows it.
