Lucasfilm has the money. An OUT restoration would be profitable. They just *don't want to do it.*
Agree about the possibilities of this, though.
Not as much as you might think!

I'm sending in a donation, not just as a MST fan, but to symbolically poke George in the eye next time he trots out such a lame excuse. ;)
Where were you in '77?
it costs a lot more than that!
and its not an excuse.
this is very misleading..
what a waste asking for money.
the guy should pay for it on his own.

We are talking 16mm though.
The point I was trying to make is, if George really lacked funds to restore the OOT, he could ask the fans for help, and would probably raise a lot more than 10k. Of course, he's never going to ask. ;)
The studios ought to consider something like this for all the movies that are still waiting to be restored, but aren't considered profitable enough to fund a restoration.
Where were you in '77?
And they already blew past the 10k mark.
Imagine the kind of moolah George could raise if he only would ask! ;)

George could come up with $10K if he'd just go thru the pockets of his blue-jean collection. It's definitely not about the money. ;-)

it would be interesting to know how much
a real 2k or 4k restoration would cost.

theres no guarantee lucasfilm has the budget for this,
or if it would be profitable releasing it. look at the profits
from the bluray set and their other merchandising they have
now. even if it wasn't strictly a business option, they only
release what they have planned for. and the originals have
not been on their map since the last dvd set.

Nope.

I think he has more than enough spare change for this. ;)

irrelevant.
it would have to be done through lucasfilm
funds, and included in their budget. he can't
legally do his own restoration using personal funds.
this is why it would have to be planned out, voted on,
etc. a lot of legal issues that he cleared once before
and also overcoming his personal issues with marcia, etc
will hold it up for most of the near future, i think. money is
just one major hurdle for lucasfilm, not lucas. you're
confusing the two.

Looks like an awesome restoration project, though.
I thought I'd seen this one (on MST3K), but I must've been confusing it with something else. The movie I'm thinking of had Raul Julia in it, apparently it was "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank", which doesn't appear to be on IMDB??

Yes it is: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089759/
Poster is wrong, but that's the film. It's counted as an episode of "American Playhouse".
Ah, Overdrawn... Where Raul Julia does a remake of Casablanca where he plays most of the parts. What an odd movie.

None of that is true in this case.

Manos is public domain. This is one of at least two restorations. The other group is also making a legitimate sequel. http://www.torgolives.com/negative1 said:

Starring the lady who played the little girl Debbie. Featuring other actors from the original, and even has a cameo from the webmaster of RiffTrax, "TorgosPizza", which is how I became aware of it.TV's Frink said:

They are now past the 21k mark. Incredible!
It's a strange universe we live in, that this can happen to a movie like Manos.*
*Not an actual Criterion release, but an incredible simulation. ;)
Where were you in '77?
I really, really need to see Manos. It sounds like something that'd be right up my alley.
