^Both points are true.  I think the Victory-class hope is just a stubborn love of mine.  My friend mentioned that they existed after having read about them in the Thrawn trilogy.  I then purchased a book that I think was called the Star Wars Technical Manual and read for the first time that there was an Imperial-class.  I thought Victory sounded cooler, and since I'd read no description, I figured in must be a larger model.  Finally I purchased the Star Wars RPG Imperial Sourcebook (one of my favorite Star Wars purchases in spite of the fact that the Executor in reality must be far larger than described there).  I saw the Victory, was at first disappointed that it was smaller, but came to think it was pretty cool anyway.  The description made it sound special because it could engage in upper atmosphere travel, something the Imperial could not do (though now the Venerator can land, so there goes that unique point as well).  Still, I've always held a fondness for it and wished it would be featured in one of the films, including the SEs when they first came out.  I think that if I had any measure of skill, I'd make an ROTJ edit with Victories, even if it were illogical for the Empire's best fleet to make use of them.

What do you guys think of my proposal?  Should I start a thread proposing a very collaborative project?  Or would one of you who actually can edit movies be interested in starting one?  I'd really like to see something like this.

^ I've been really interested in a RotJ edit, and would love to be a part of a collaborative project.

Hi all who frequent these Forums,

Making sense of Hoth - Strucural Edit

http://www.mediafire.com/?2me1k7repc0e1mx

I have been trying to work out another way to structure  the Hoth battle In my head for the last few Months, my main ambition was to show Vader coming down to the planet and snow troopers doing a ground assault. Now this is an extremely crude / rough cut think of it more as structure than what I would hope to see. Unfortunatly you will need to use your imagination in this as any scene without a Hoth Backdrop or Matte you will need to imagine it is composited there lol :)

Any footage used from the original Trilogys consider the main object on screen / Character composited on Hoth and a good shot to use perhaps(Bar Obi-wan).

I used some footage from Imps chapter 2 just to get the feel of when the ground assault should happen and certainly do not propose using this footage but you would have to film people dressed as snow troopers to accomplish a true assault with planned shots.

I used a couple of peoples cgi footage namley Alanfae for the gun shots you posted just to improve the feel and starchoob for a downed AT-AT because I think they are good ideas so complete credit to other talented people I do not do CGI obviously, but hope I would inspire people who do CGI to perhaps play with this idea. Hope you don't mind me using your work / rough cuts but I agree with your ideas that is all and I hope you do not slag me off for doing so.

If you think the idea I had is crap / good then just say so, but this is along the structure lines of what I want to see for a Hoth Battle someday and try to make the battle a bit more logical in a way I hope whilst bringing Vader into the battle somewhat by killing a rebel will give the impression that he would want to kill Han / Leia at this point and not capture as we learn later to ultimatly get to luke before any intervention later by the emporer.

It would be alot of work though to do this properly... But not impossible there is a way and probably somone may have a better idea than me after seeing this.... That is the main purpose or you may feel it is pointless.

Try not to Laugh too much :)

Change list

1.Chewbaccas stolen AT-ST footage from ROTJ inserted for assaults on trenches. needs composite to Hoth

2.Rebels destroy that AT-ST again from ROTJ but Flipped needs composite but works well as an exchange as the dish gets targeted and destroyed by AT-AT's immediatly after the AT-ST is Destroyed.

3.Alanfae idea of guns fire back footage used because it needs it.

4.Star Choobs Downed AT-AT FX because It works well to show the shield is down on the AT-AT.

5.Opening Shots from  ROTJ Flipped lambda shuttle approach to echo base on hoth also needing composite to Hoth

6.Lukes Crashed paused at last frame but would also benefit from slowed reversed video of first few frames before grabbing the saftey harness in the next exterior shot to make more "real".

7.IMPS Footage to help attempt to show ground assault by Snow troopers. Difficulty with the AT-ATs as no distinguishing marks on them as this would be happening in a seperate place not above luke as it looks here. Completly new Snowtrooper footage at this point. I know this is a little bit jumbled but i was only considering it as a marker. Stormtroopers don't always miss!!

8.Retreat from the trenches footage moved to this point.. This would mean new Rebel footage retreating on the open ice fields and / or snowspeeder later and not trenches...

9.ESB SE 2004 Footage of Vader Debarking Lambda shuttle flipped needing composite and rebel lasers incoming.

10.Vader kills a rebel (Flipped shot of final blow to Obi-wan) replace Obi-Wan with a rebel to slay perhaps he could even bounce a laser bolt away from him.Needing Composite.

Vader is now in the battle Empire Victory is off screen from radio transmission "Imperial Troops have entered the base." This gives continuity to the scene where Vader Actually enters the base later on. we also know that he fought to get there and was a key part of the Empires Victory.

Whilst the canon debate is up though, it could be good for an editor to clarify what THEIR canon is perhaps? My reason being is that I find it INFURIATING when one puts an idea forward to edit one film, and then receive about a dozen nonconstructive comments on how that would affect another film WHICH YOU MAY ALREADY HAVE PLANS TO CHANGE!

An example of this could be say ADYcanon, and TROOPERMANcanon, which may have plans, either real, planned or theoretical to edit a broader selection of the films.

Perhaps it would be a good thread to start, where editors make single posts with THEIR canon explained, and links put in their signatures?

I like that idea. Make that thread. Call it......Cannon Fodder.

Just plugging this thread into here so that it can be accessed from this one should it wander off at a later date.

I had another bonkers idea.

In fact it was so bonkers I was originally going to put it in the Worst Edit Ideas thread but after washing my pans I had second thoughts.

What about replacing the Ewoks for Ents?

Well that was how I was going to word it on the Worst Ideas thread but if there was intelligent plant life on the planet, living in harmony with the Ewoks and all the other creatures and suddenly the Empire showed up and started cutting down the Forrest and putting a metal moon in the sky maybe it too would rebel.

You could introduce the concept when the Rebel's first land by adding footage of wiggling vines and self moving foliage.

But later you could show trees bowing to allow the Ewoks to enter their village and maybe passing objects to village members.

Later you could have speeder bikes smacked out of the sky and some of the traps shown in the ground battle could be organically triggered by the trees themselves.

It would go someway to making Endor look a little less Californian.

Yeah someone mentions that on that site, but its a nice meshe, the first page of the thread shows it a bit more 'SW'-ish.

Kind of looks like a spherical version of the Borg cube from First Contact (especially given its proximity to earth).

Of course, I just posted that to stay on topic while I WIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH.

You mean the Borg sphere from the same movie? ;)

Reminds me of a stripped down Unicron.

Wow, I don't even remember making that post.

And sure, the sphere from the same movie.  This ain't originaltrek.com.

In the past I suggessted I'd like to have seen the Emperor show up at the DS in something more majestic. I reccomended white robes.

Anyway, yesterday I was coloring with my lad, and since he tells me what color crayons to use (bossy... gets it from his mom) I ended up coloring a Darth Vader with a red cape.

It looked awesome.

I think in that one scene, the huge formal arrival of Empy on the DS, it would have been bad ass to see Vader in a red silk cape.

Maybe a red lined cape like Duke Dracula or General Geebus.

that could be interesting. he does vary his wardrobe a bit in ESB. maybe extra stand in moffs could have more fancy regalia.

An idea for ROTJ to improve the battle on Endor and reduce the ewok problem.

1. Replace the Tydirium with a larger cargo shuttle and instead of a small strike team make it big enough to carry 100 rebel commandos. This would require a new CGI cargo ship and maybe a build of the back ramp of the cargo ship. Then film some extras boarding on the calamari ship and then exiting on Endor. An added benefit of this change would be to keep the shuttle Vader and the Emperor travel on as 'special', not just run of the mill general purpose shuttles.

2. Feature more rebel commandos in the ground battle. These could be largely responsible for the victory with the ewoks simply helping the troops find the 'back door' and acting as decoys. This would require location shooting in a forest with lots of extras in rebel and stormtrooper outfits.

maybe if the bonus commandos was explored, a larger subplot could be introduced to replace/reduce the ewoks? if there is a larger rebel force, some event could seperate them into two parties, leaving the smaller party to finish the mission. it could be a second shuttle crashing, or failing to arrive. but it is generally assumed that the larger half is gone. the rebels get captured, marched outside and all seems lost. the battle starts as before (perhaps without the ewoks, just 3p0 causing a distraction). but theyre cornered and death is almost certain. the predictable twist later on would be the lost rebels showing up. maybe even using the shuttle's firepower to allow han and his few remaining troops to re-storm the bunker.

That would be great but I was trying to come up with something that doesn't require any new dialogue from the stars.

Author

it depends how extensive new subplots are integrated into ROTJ.

i've always fancied the idea that it is lead from a new cast of characters, such as rebel command, or a second rebel group being integrated into the alliance. general nadine/mon mothma and admiral ackbar could be replaced for instance and provide the relevant exposition to tie the ideas in.

i suppose the best we can do is re-storyboard new ROTJ stuff and edit that into the original film.

Wouldn't it make sense if Lando was made an Admiral and Leia was made a General (she has been a military commander for two films it makes sense she gets a rank)?

Sure there is a gag there about Han being a General after pulling Lando's leg but Lando leads several attack squadrons and gives direct advice to the fleet Admiral so it makes more sense if he is an Admiral himself.

You know, that's something that annoyed me about JEDI even as a kid... why is everyone who is part of the A-Team a "general"?  Is C3PO a general?  Why not R2D2?  Hell, let's make Luke's lightsabre a general too.

Though I will say General Calrissian has a nice ring to it...

Commodore Calrissian would have been fun for alliteration fans (Admiral Ackbar must have made them smile).

A shady businessman who ran an illegal mining operation suddenly becomes a general in only 6 months.  This "general" also happens to have betrayed one of the Alliance's main leaders and made secret dealings with the Empire.  Lando must have been one sweet talker.

And who's to say he wasn't still in contact with Darth Vader?  Maybe Vader offered him amnesty in exchange for infiltrating the rebel's highest ranks?  I think I would have liked to see Lando's character take a darker turn.

When we first see the Sarlacc there is this weird looking crab claw thing flopped over to one side.

I think it's meant to be part of the creature but it's never been animated not even in any of the SEs.

Just now I thought rather than just animating it there might be more tension to be had by making it a snapped off limb of a former meal still flapping around.

When Luke looks down at the pit we could see some tentacles dragging the left overs into the mouth giving the audience a taste of the threat the pit creature represents.
