Glee to resurrect Star Wars Christmas special

You may have thought that George Lucas would want the infamous 1978 Star Wars Christmas Special – a generally embarrassing music, comedy and dance “spectacular” produced for CBS TV in 1978 – to be buried, forgotten and banished from YouTube (uploaded from dodgy sixth generation VHS copies), but apparently not. Because presumably somebody at Lucasfilm has given the thumbs up for Glee to resurrect it for this year’s Christmas special.

“We’re doing a Christmas special within the episode of Glee and it’s a throwback and a tribute to the Star Wars holiday special and the Judy Garland Christmas special.”

Someone at LFL is allowing a popular TV show to acknowledge the existence of the HS. Between this and the cartoon being on the Blu-rays, I wonder if its coming...

Touched up and enhanced, I expect.
With new Life Day performances by Ke$ha and Justin Beiber that Lucas was unable to realize when he produced the Holiday Special before either of them was born.

fucking. hell.

still, as every character in glee is a one dimensional, cardboard cut out,  and with plotlines that make high school musical look like silence of the lambs they might be more at home with something from the prequels.

and before you lot start, the wife watches it.

honestly!

Mrs. O'Five and I used to watch it, until we came to the same conclusion that you did. Second season and they were already recycling plots from the first with opposite morals to the story... That's when I started to really lose it.

Morbid curiosity may draw me to this episode.

But will they do songs from "A Christmas in the Stars"?

Disney makes merchandise and built a theme park ride based on a movie they refuse to release on video in the U.S., so don't read too much into this. We've already had the HS Boba Fett action figure.

As Robot Chicken has already proved, all you need is permission, and cut George a check. ;)

While I'm not proud to admit it, Glee is definitely a guilty pleasure of mine. I absolutely hate myself for watching it, yet I still do... But still, I just can't wait to see some wookiee snuggies!

One of George's daughters (Katie?) is obviously a Glee fan; that's why we're getting this.  Same reason we almost got N'Sync in AOTC.  And let's not forget, she is going to end up inheriting the franchise.

I have never seen an episode of Glee and will never see an episode of Glee. I just know such teeny-bopper strychnine would send me over into a murderous rage.

I'm so out of the loop when it comes to these things, I don't even know what channel it's on! ;)

I still want to see Chewie though.

If I was younger and had wealth and influence, I would put MYSELF in these shows, not my father's over-exposed franchise.

This was probably done because of the Blu-ray sales dwindling, they're trying to drum up interest in the franchise before Christmas comes.

If you ever watched a single second of baseball or football on FOX, you wouldn't be able to avoid it.

only episode I saw was the rocky horror one.  the kid that played rif riff was pretty good.  too bad susan saradon couldn't make a cameo :(

as far as LFL involvement.  I guess it would depend if the producers approached them first or vice versa.

either way, its free publicity and keeps star wars in the public eye - so its a win win.  very few people have seen the holiday special since 1978 so from a newbies POV (do people still say newbie?), its another parody.

After TPM, i stopped believing lucas had nothing to do with the holiday special.  when you factor in the PT, howard the duck and a lot of the crap in IJATKOTCS, the holiday special is pretty consistent with lucas' true sensibilities - save for the cyber sex scene.

it wouldn't surprise me if the holiday special is one day released.  if reports are correct, the boba fett cartoon is an easter egg in the blu ray set.  sadly, apologists are probably spreading around the talking point that 'see - that cartoon.  thats the only thing lucas did for the special! everything else was not him!!'

I would not be surprised if that was also part of the deal.  Glee gets to use Chewbacca but Glee has to give Katie a grand tour and meet-and-greet with the actors.  (And maybe even let her be an extra in the episode.)

I've heard similar arrangements were made with the infamous N'SYNC incident and also George's appearance The OC.  Both times he whored out Star Wars to please his kids.

It's a holiday special, not a christmas special. It was broadcast on November 17th; so if anything, it was a thanksgiving special.

You clearly haven't seen THX 1138! ;)

I still enjoy Howard the Duck more than any of the prequels. Hopefully, Marvel will figure out how to do a more faithful adaptation of the comic someday.

My interest in Glee remains at absolute zero.

 lol,  good catch!!

but that scene wasn't played for laughs and thx wasn't a kids show.

then again, with howard the duck having lea thompson in her underwear....maybe lucas did have input in the HS sex scene....eek

anyways, i thought the n-sync rumor wasn't true? and what is katie lucas' role in LFL? i know shes a clone wars writer, and that she is apparently a d-bag on twitter (was that confirmed to be her?).  does she have a big say in LFL?  is she trying to use it to get attention?

The Glee Christmas episode is up for HuluPlus members. Anyone going to risk it, or do I have to?

It was on SKY1 tonight and i decided to check it out. What a mistake that was. How the hell can people actually watch this crap? Well, after all the hype about chewie being in it he was on screen for all  of about 3 seconds. It was a blink and miss it cameo. The only other star wars related stuff was the opening of their TV special, which was a nod to the holiday special opening titles and 2 characters dressed as Luke and Han. That was it. And boy was it cringe-worthy. I wanted to gouge out my eyes and rip off my ears after watching that.

They needed Lucasfilm's permission for that? There was more SW content in the film "Zack and Miri Make a Porno". ;)
