Just wanted to say thanks for all the great hard work you've done Harmy.
Also a quick question, will 2.0 be out by January or later you think? Oh and are you thinking of releasing a trailer before?

Thanks guys :-)
@pop: With all the current development it could be as late as January but I'm hoping to actually get it done before x-mas :-)
And I don't know about a trailer, maybe :-)
Just tried viewing the newest version, but the file is temporarily unavailable... *sadface* Excited to see what's in store!
It's just that, temporary. Try again later. And try refreshing the MU page a few times.

My only question would be that the subtitles might look a little too bold, from what i remember of the original?
You need to make yourself more clear. Do you mean the subs in the video or on the picture? The subs in the video aren't final - they were so bold because I tried to simulate the subs in Puggo Grande but then I found some different sources, which I think are very reliable (one of which is the Baltimore screening video but mainly Mike Verta's picture, which I think can be deemed 100% reliable) which seem to point towards a slightly thinner, more rounded font (it's probably the same font in Puggo's but the overblown whites make it look thicker) hence Yoo_Too's adjustment of my subs, which makes it look almost perfectly like the original subs and that's what's in the last picture I posted :-)
I dont know, i dont currently have the gout on my computer to compare.
The GOUT wouldn't help you determine the right look of the subs, because it uses ugly selectable DVD subs, which make no attempt at simulating the original theatrical subs.

the greedo subs originally did sort of a morphing effect? Cool. Was that not present in the gout? I don't recall seeing it in that transfer. Was this on the 35mm print?
If you're talking about the fade in/out with a blur thing, all evidence seems to point toward no such thing ever being there in SW, so I'll probably take it out. I just thought it looked pretty cool. I've seen countless subtitled films theatrically and I remember this effect being there but as it seems it wasn't there in this case, and since we're getting closer and closer to the actual theatrical subs, I think I'll take it out.
You may also have noticed that I cut back on the shake in the last two videos - it's still there but not as much.

I don't see how a fade-in would even be possible using the hand-compositing methods used for Star Wars. The thing that causes subtitle shake also prevents the fade-in from being possible.

Good choice. The blue glow you had around the subs probably shouldn't be there either, since I think that's just an effect of the overexposure of the whites in that senator screening capture. I guess that's where you got that idea?
Anyway, I'll continue working on the subs now! :)
And I'll check the last preview you posted as soon as megaupload allows me to.
As to the fade in, why would that be impossible with optical subs? It would be done just the same way as any other fade - simply less exposure. But the fact remains that it wasn't done for SW, so I'll scratch it.
I got the blue glow idea from Puggo's transfer as well but yeah, I'll scratch that too.

yeah - was talking about the video. Thanks for the info.

You_Too, if you're still working on those subs, may I suggest to perhaps squeeze the letters vertically slightly, that's what I would do if I re-did my avisynth subs today after seeing better references, an easy way to see what I mean is the letter g for example. But yours already destroys my subs as far as I can see on that pic, great work. :)
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

The new clip of Han looks great! I would never be able to tell that clip was tweaked if I hadn't known it was!
Keep up the good work Harmy! And everyone else as well :)

MU finally let me download the clip! Looks fantastic!! Very nice job You_Too!

Fantastic! It really does look great!
Let me just pop in and say that I'm really glad efforts are being made to replicate the missing frames in the Greedo scene, because as the guy doing the 5.1 audio, I will not ever be convinced to alter the mix to accommodate the flaws of the SE. These things are designed for GOUT-synch and that's final. ;)
Although delays are frustrating for sure, in a way I'm actually sort of glad to hear that it will take a bit longer, because that gives me more time to work on the revised 70mm mix. This time I want to go all out and make it resemble the real thing as much as possible, so now I can perfect it some more and still have it ready in time to be included on this project.
I haven't been able to check out all the videos yet, but from the screenshots it looks like the latest version of the subtitles is definitely on the right track with its slightly narrower and more rounded look. I was able to view the most recent clip of the duel, and while previously I felt that the colours were problematic and made the different sources stand out from each other too much, they're looking much more seamless and better quality this time around. Excellent work on that!
When I was working on Greedo's subs, I thought why not have some fun with them too? :)
Haha! That's great You_Too! Those will make nice desktop backgrounds...
I don't have much to add, other than to say nice job all around. The colars are fixed, the subtitles look phenomenal, and the frame replication is completely believable and seamless. I'm very impressed with the ground that's been gained. :)

Here's another little something:
I'll render a video later today, so stay tuned :-)
I see you've even added that almost not visible transparent background behind the text. I'd say though, that without having any clean reference frames of the other lines we wouldn't know how it should look there. Like for example "Jabba's put a price..." has two lines, and we don't know if the transparent background was cut where the first line is shorter.
On the other hand I know nothing about optical subs, so correct me if I'm wrong.
What I'm sure it is, is a garbage matte, so I'm sure it would be around the whole subtitle. Now, for the final render, I'm going to make it even subtler, since this should be practically invisible :-)
Actually, when you look really closely at Puggo's transfer, you can just make it out (more in the movement of the compression artefacts than anything else) and it does seem to follow the shape of the shorter line.
Oh, ok. Then you'll be able to recreate it. :)

I never noticed it before... but what is that big green blob behind his head?

No idea, been wondering about that myself.

Mike Verta has a shot from a different angle in his References thread. It's a strange decoration on the wall behind him, maybe ceramic? Almost looks black in that photo.
Due to Mike's wishes, I won't link, but it's there to see if you're a member.

Here's the video as promised :-)

and here it is on You Tube but as usual it is ugly as f*ck due to compression and it might get blocked:
Edit: NVM, it did get blocked. F*cking YouTube :-/
