I will agree that there are few other major releases out there that have been so badly tampered with that the fans feel the need to do their own work to correct it. There are many fantastic blu-rays out there, and many mediocre ones as well, and some are even terrible (Total Recall, the first release of Fifth Element, etc.) but none have been so badly damaged that fans can't actually enjoy watching the film unless they learn film-editing themselves and fix the damage.

I think that's generalfrevious's point - Lucasfilm is a mega-corporation - they are expected to put out a quality product. Instead, their blu-ray set is mediocre at best, with picture quality issues galore, not even discussing the latest and greatest special edition changes that we were subjected to.

Fan editing is one thing - many do it for fun to create alternate versions. But many of us feel the special editions are truly unwatchable - that's a problem considering it just got a major blu-ray release.
