Let's get back to the problem: Gl refuses to give us what we want...

IMHO it's not about what "we" want. Some people want the oot, some people want a purist SE, yadda yadda yadda...

It's about what SHOULD exist out there, and what SHOULD exist out there is respect for film history and culture. Instead we get, in the words of Yogurt, "moichandising, moichandising, moichandising!" that's what it's all about!

I stand corrected, that the OOT should exist out there is what I meant.

The saddest thing is that is all hinges on a stubborn ass of a person, and with Katie Lucas' behavior towards us it looks like GL's stubbornness is going to continue beyond the grave.

I think what SHOULD have been done is exactly what (murder me for saying this) they're doing to Star Trek: The Next Generation. They're taking all the ORIGINAL film elements for the episodes and recomposing them from scratch. So we have the exact same episode, but with modern, HD composition. The result is a new, crisp, updated feel while still respecting the history.

Why can't we get that with Star Wars?

That's exactly what the Special Edition was supposed to be until someone had the bright idea of replacing a couple battle shots with CGI fighters. Most of the changes are exactly what they're doing with TNG.

It's the "most" that concerns me. It's what started Star Wars down the path to destruction.

Thankfully the people behind Trek know better, for the most part.

I thought this wasn't possible for many effects, having been produced on video, and so they're redoing things in CG?

As I understand it, only the optical effects like phasors, transporters, lights on the ship, etc. needed to be redone.  Everything else seems to be taken from the negatives.

I'd be very interested in that, if the original was also preserved.

The composites were done on video. The raw elements were shot on film. Scan the film in HD and digitally re-composite and you have something that looks incredibly better than 1980's 480 video.

Well, if that's so, then there is a huge difference between TNG and SW, because where on TNG it was completely impossible to have those original composites in HD without recompositing them, because the compositing was done at 480p (or probably 480i actually), with SW it is absolutely possible to scan the original composites in HD and there is no reason to destroy their original artistic and historic value by recompositing them digitally.

The fact that they're releasing even a sample disc of TNG episodes in HD is pretty ridiculous when the actual big-screen films are yet to get decent blu-ray transfers (Wrath of Khan's restoration notwithstanding). Star Trek VI is a 1080i-to-1080p conversion for crying out loud! Since they only released 2, 4, 6 and 8 individually and never got around to the other six movies, I'm still holding out hope that Paramount will do new transfers of all ten movies (well, except Wrath of Khan) and put them out whenever the next Abrams movie hits theaters.

Different company. CBS handles the Trek TV shows, Paramount handles the movies.

Furthermore, Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country are the only two of the bunch that are really watchable... ;)

I thought this was SW forum! I'm glad that Trek is in good hands, but that doesn't make the SW situation any better than it is now.

Here's what at stake: we have a man who has the power to order the federal government not to preserve their own copies of his films. Anyone who questions his destruction of the OOT is told to get a life, even though no other filmmaker tampers his movies like GL has and withhold the originals (the reason he is where is right now) from the public. He has groomed his children to ensure the disintegration of the original films for many years after his own death. He continues to show poor taste in creative decisions in whatever movie he is currently releasing or rereleasing, even tarnishing the careers of more talented persons (Crystal skull the prime example). Don't get pissed off when he updates the OT yet again for home video in 2018, 2025, 2032, 2039, etc. when we will sadly become nostalgic for the 2011 Blu-rays.

We should start preservation efforts now, before it's too late.

Having learned some new info lately, I must say that the situation about real SW vanishing from the surface of the Earth doesn't seem so dire anymore. At least for the original film but the situation isn't so bad for ESB either and hopefully in time ROTJ as well. And I'm not talking about my projects, which I only consider a temporary viewing supplement but not a preservation in the real sense, if only for the fact that they don't contain most of the original optical composites.

There's really only a semantic difference between the two when you're talking about film transfers - it's not like 1080i has half the resolution of 1080p in this case.

Since they only released 2, 4, 6 and 8 individually and never got around to the other six movies

Whatchoo talkin' bout? I can see 1, 3, 5, 7 all on Amazon.

Thanks to Mike Okuda, God knows how would the Star Trek BluRays end without him

I'm going to repost this, because people apparently read only the first and last sentences of my comments:

To imagine I almost didn't read your post for the first time... and even now, I find so much more subtext and meaning in there.... Thank you for reposting.
