You_Too I wasn't actually leveling my post at you as directly as it seemed :)  There's just been this general idea floating around and gaining legitimacy, and it needs to be stopped, that's all.  There are Tech prints out there, and they're just amazing, beautiful sources for restoration when treated properly.  Bottom line, even at their absolute worst, they're better than what we have now.

The more I read about the state of Star Wars' original negative, I totally agree with you. As it stands, the negative of the OOT is in piss poor condition. The negative of the effects shots have apparently faded into nothing and the rest of the negative is fading with each passing day. If the OOT were to ever be restored, it would either be from the seperation masters or from technicolor prints.

However, on a positive note, I read from one source that the O neg for Empire and Jedi was not used for the special editions and remains in its original pre 97 edition.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

Harmy,

I love your DEED disc images, but the black and white borders present around the edge cause some issues with my printing software (Epson Print CD) which automatically scales the whole image to fit the disc, and ends up printing a black ring around the edge of the disc, then the white border.  I'm going to photoshop the images to get rid of the black and white borders, which should fix my problem.  I'm just wondering if it is OK for me to post the borderless versions for download in case it helps out anyone else with this problem?  Thanks.

Hamry,

a member here posted a CD with 70mm scans from the unaltered trilogy some years ago. I still have this CD here. Maybe the scans could be used as colour reference. If you're interested I could upload the CD image, but I think your release comes very close to the scans I have.

Man, I'm HaRMy! I let it slide the last two times but I just had to say something this time ;-)

And they wouldn't happen to be these screenshots, would they? If not, I'm totally definitely interested in seeing them! Thanks :-)

Oh, sorry, sorry, sorry HaRMy! I think I need some glasses!

Well, yes these are the screenshots. I didn't know these are on jedi1.net...

Just downloaded the CD back then.

Shame, I was hoping for some more HD scans :-(

Well, thanks anyway :-)

Hey, green lights! :) Love your attention to detail, Harmy.

The color balance looks quite a bit warmer here than in 1.0. Is that by design or is there still adjustment to be made? I'm not sure which is more "correct" in regard to your sources. Either way, I'm excited, and it's looking great.

Take care,

Darth T.

Neato. I was just curious. I'm too new to the restoration aspect to have input on what is "right" regarding color balance; I'm just enjoying observing your process. I'm sure it will turn out great.

Thanks for being so open for questions. Carry on. :)

Nice wide saber and nice green lights! :)

Correct me if I'm wrong though, but shouldn't that upper button on Vader's "middle-console" be green as well? And you didn't use my render for this one, right? I checked mine and there's slightly more shadow detail and grain, and it's less cropped. Maybe this is one of those scenes you mentioned which you don't wanna remake from scratch?

Yeah, that's exactly the case. Rotoscoping the lightsabres was a huge pain in the ass and there's no way in hell I'm redoing that.

so how far off is V2.0?

All these minor changes have me stoked to get an even better DE, I didn't think V1.0 could be topped.

It's going relatively slowly since I have to colour correct from scratch, so my most optimistic estimate would be two weeks.

But yeah, I think v2.0 is totally going to kick v1.0's ass!

wow, that is a lot sooner than I thought.  I was hoping it would be out before the end of the year.

And I really understand that. I tried some rotoscoping in after effects a while ago and I found it very hard to get it right.

Love that screenshot. Harmy,  if I could I would give you a Oscar for best restoration.

looking for HDTV of the  Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.  Also HDTV of The Lord of the Rings trilogy

OK, here are the borderless disc images.  This is Harmy's original work completely unaltered other than being cropped to perfect 1810-pixel circles to remove the border.

I just used Epson Print CD on a Verbatim DL DVD+R with these images and the results are fantastic.  With those discs, I used outer diameter 118mm, inner diameter 37mm and a -1 color correction for best results.  I'm glad I'm able to make a contribution to this project, even if it is a very small one.

These are apparently high def scans of the original version and for some reason they are cropped to 4:3. They could be some promo materials of course but still.

Those ARE promo stills. Take a look here:

You need to purchase download credits though to download the files at high resolution. For color reference the small previews should be good enough though.

With pictures like this being there, I wouldn't trust any of these to be a reliable colour reference.

Yeah, most of those are not reliable as color references with their different tints and all. Still, it's a nice collection of photos! And there's this one again, well not the exact same shot as the one I posted before, but it makes me wonder how that scene looked in the cinema since there seems to be so many versions.

Yay! Green lights!

You_Too; the upper chestbox light is indeed meant to be a green one but it was never lit. It was just the plastic cover glued on there.

I am going to be a bit critical about one point. (for a change LOL)

The saturation and opacity of the green lights on the belt and Obi-Wan's saber are too much. Neither element looks like that in the GOUT or 97 SE. While those arent perfect I think they show just about how they should look. This is similar to the problems I have brought up about Vader's saber in other scenes and the ESB sabers.

Less is better. I know you are trying to bring back the brillance the originals might have had but I think it is too far. If you can cut down the color saturation and make the flare around the saber and lights less that would be better IMO.

Not trying to pick on you just thought I would bring that up for the future. Thanks again for making the color correct at least! I appreciate it.

That lightsabre is straight from 97SE without any major tweaks and I really don't think the saturation is too high on either the sabre or the lights considering the saturation on the rest of the picture. The GOUT is very wrong in that regard IMO. I had a chance to see some pictures that confirm this. I did tweak Vader's sabre in some of those shots you suggested before though.

Anyway, I'm editing the duel together now (no I'm not that far yet, I still didn't get past the first ten minutes. I just needed a break from the beginning of the movie and decided to put together the scenes where I'll be swapping a lot of shots - such as the duel but also the hologram scenes and the prison block shoot-out) and I'm having some serious trouble keeping the colours consistent throughout the scene.
