I just posted a comparison in my ESB:R thread of a shot of the Hoth battle between the blu-ray and a 35mm cell scan from the original theatrical version.

The blu-ray is just one smudged mess. Anyone that thinks the blu-rays are top quality and that a scan from the theatrical version could never look as good really need to think again.
