I wish I could say this was made up, or even that the originator was joking, but I believe it was intended as truth. When there was a big debate on what defines a planet, there were several potential new entries to the list. When the IAU came out with its definition that excluded Pluto as well as the others on the list, many people were offended, including a columnist in the U of A newspaper (wish I could get access to the archives for you guys, but I can't figure it out. Their names of other candidates included Xena and Charon. The columnist was convinced that, and I'm quoting as best as I can remember, "In this era of Bush-dominated religious fanaticism, there is no room for a lesbian warrior or gods of the underworld in our solar system," or something like that. Ridiculous! George Bush and his open religious beliefs forced the International Astronomical Union (and Mr. Bush has always been popular among any international body) to remove any celestial body that might have a name offensive to Christians. If you were disappointed with Pluto's demotion, blame George!
