Anybody got a 70mm frame of the hangar shot?

Maybe.  Do you think it'd be in this 70mm Technicolor IB print I've been using as a paperweight?

LOL. There's no such thing as a 70mm IB Technicolor print. :)

I put a smiley in, but actually, it's a serious question. Remember those limited-edition 70mm film cells that were available back in the mid-90s? Quite a few of them show up on eBay, I was asking if anybody has come across one of the Falcon hangar shot.

The closest thing I know of is that screencap from the Senator screening, the one on zombie's site, and aren't you using that as one of the elements in your current composite?

Yeah, and I think that one looks great for what it is (one of my proudest moments in v1.0 actually) but there are two different mattes and I don't have the other one in any better quality than the GOUT.

It's the bottom left one in this picture posted by Laserschwert:

The picture comes from Rinzler's making of book and he actually used the GOUT for those too.

The one on the right is an unused painting.

And I saw a production photo of the actual prop from that angle and they clearly painted over the whole thing, because all the little details are different.

Oh that painting. The one in TAoSW is from the first shot - I don't think I've ever seen the blank matte painting of the second one anywhere.

My question is still valid though - anybody ever come across the second hangar shot in that series of limited-edition 70mm film cells?

Its rough....and its not the original, but as a concept??...maybe not

Oh, I wondered why it only said that the soldiers were new in the comparison comment :-) It's time to change it. Oh and the window is different and a lot of the soldiers inside the room were originally a matte-painting too.
That was the official description. I modified it.

When all of the soldiers pivot towards the front after the shot, the throne room is A LOT less wide, and the pillars look like neither the SE or original. Nothing you should fix though...

Looks really close. I actually thought about that but couldn't find any picture of Falcon similar enough. Anyway, once again, this is not the one I need.

Sorry,if i'm going off in the wrong direction Harmy, but the photo on the cover of the MPC/AMT/Airfix model at the time is of the 5 foot filming model....I have high res scan of this image.....it could be used to enhance details to the "you're braver than I thought" scene.

If this ends up being usable, I nominate this for the Most Awesomest Source Material Used in a Film Restoration Project.

I actually already tried with this picture ages ago but couldn't get it to work, it was too different.

Just for the record, I thought the Falcon DS matte looked really good in version 1.

looking for HDTV of the  Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.  Also HDTV of The Lord of the Rings trilogy

OK, I've got some bad news. I got the scans of the Falcon matte (from a 35mm print) I've been waiting for. Unfortunately, they are very blurry and aren't really an improvement over the GOUT (they are possibly even worse). I'm not sure whether this is due to the print (which is very faded) or due to the way they were scanned (more likely) but there it is.

It's not our last hope though. There might be another. ;-)

But it would still take some time before I can get that. But in the mean-time, I can finish the last few shots and start editing.

OK, so I accepted the challenge and put my sources together and came up with this:

1. A frame of the 35mm scan I got.

2. GOUT

3. v1.0

4. v2.0 (unless I get my hands on a better source)

Sorry but I think V1.0 looks better.

V2; I think the contrast and sharpness are far too much. I know what you are going for but I think it makes it look more out of place than a blurry washed out version.

What is going on with the starfield and window sils? The stars are very faint and on the window I see that you have incorporated the 35mm look but it looks too sharp I think.

Sorry to be critical.

^I heartily agree with you, sirs.

Yes Version 1.0 is a lot better and more natural.

Don't know if your v2.0 Falcon matte is final or not but it lacks the reflection on the floor the original have, so do your v1.0. Just an observation.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Well, I like the new one waaay better, so though cookies ;-D

You have to see it in full resolution - and it also looks a bit better than the old one in motion when you add grain too. It's far from perfect but it looks less like 90s video and more like film IMO.

What do you mean about the top edge of the cockpit window? That looks way better in v2.0.

Author

You're doing great job, Harmy. When you're already going through the trouble, maybe you could try to restore the missing reflection to make it even closer.

Maybe it has already been pointed out.

I'll see what I can do. The problem is that the stromtroopers cross that area as they walk, so I'm not sure I'll be able to pull it off convincingly.

Actually I think the cockpit on the V2 is the weakest area. It looks the most out of place to me.

The interior is too dark. The pitch black window cut outs although sharp, do not look like there is a cockpit behind them.

Some of the subtle depth details have been lost with the increased contrast.

I won't deny that there's room for improvement and I'm working on it but I had to crush the blacks a bit because in case you guys didn't notice, I'm trying to fit it with 2004 SE footage.
