Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released) — Page 83

1.0 didn't use the full original matte painting, 2.0 did. Look at the stone walls.

Also, even with the GOUT's odd black levels, you can see darker shadow detail in the live footage than in the matte painting. And the original matte painting doesn't seem to have any black in it (though these tones aren't exactly what showed up on film, of course).

1.0 is too bright, 2.0 is too dark; maybe the answer would be to split the difference at something in between?

I'd agree with that approach.  Would it be possible to try for halfway in-between?

Thanks everyone for all the info on the subtitle shake, since this was on the actual film itself then I am for it being on v2.0.

Thats to dark.

I will agree that is one of the worst shots in the movie but thats the way it was in '77. Thats The way I personally love the movie.  I love Star Wars with its paper soldiers, rubber mask and fake ass Dewback.

I think the original matte as seen in V1 is best, V2 just looks like a 4x3 shot

But that's the problem, in v1, it's not the original matte. I'm working on some tweaks now but it will definitely be the whole mattepainting in v2.0.

Lest anyone not understand, here is the 1977/97 change comparison : https://picasaweb.google.com/102542760950977079734/StarWarsSpecialEditionChangesHD#5514976103623090866

The source for 77 is GOUT and the source for 97 is 2004, so colors, black-levels, etc are probably inaccurate everywhere, but you can at least see that, yes, it really is supposed to be pretty dark.

(Side note: When I saw the film at The Senator, I didn't know to look for the bad matte, and I never noticed it)

Of course you didn't, because when watching the film normally, your eyes are naturally drawn to the movement in the middle.

Oh, I wondered why it only said that the soldiers were new in the comparison comment :-) It's time to change it. Oh and the window is different and a lot of the soldiers inside the room were originally a matte-painting too.

I love you, I love you.   No I am not gay!

That looks really good to me.  If someone with a better memory of the film says it needs to be a touch brighter or dimmer, I'd say there's room for small adjustments either way.

Harmy,  do you plan to update your before and after screen shots on your DS page? How did you do that?

Can you still make Leia's tits bigger.  Just kidding.

By jove I think he's done it!

Looks perfect to me

To be honest, it looks better as a still (I'll post a video soon) but then I think we established that this shot simply never looked particularly good and what saved it was that people's eyes were drawn away from the bad matte-painting.

Next question: Are you going through the scenes you're working on chronologically?  Because frankly if that's true there's more to be excited about than a silly matte painting.

More or less. There are some scenes I'm still waiting for new materials for.

Did you get the matte of the Falcon docked in Death Star?

Anyway you could photoshop enhance the MF in DS....like the Throne room matte?

As I stated a few pages back, the problem with the Falcon docking matte is that it is not fully a painting. As Ellenshaw stated in his interview with Rinzler, he painted around a still of the model. You can see this painting, the one that was actually used, in the Art of Star Wars book - it's the hangar, and the *edges* of the Falcon.

You'd need a high-res film frame. The closest thing I know of is that screencap from the Senator screening, the one on zombie's site, and aren't you using that as one of the elements in your current composite?

Anybody got a 70mm frame of the hangar shot? :)

Fantastic!  And where it's not fantastic, it's still faithful.

Maybe.  Do you think it'd be in this 70mm Technicolor IB print I've been using as a paperweight?
