i saw TPM over the weekend.  was curious since i kept hearing that this had the most improvement over its DVD counterpart but it was agressively scrubbed.

I mentioned on another thread I was interested in learning if TPM would still be more pleasing than the other PT movies because of the look.  If I were to guess, I would have to say 'no'.

while the EE is gone for the most part, the DNR is laughable.  And I normally don't notice this kind of stuff as well as other home theatre enthusiasts.  The scene of TC-14 welcoming qui-gon and obi-wan is so blatant.  Its hilarious watching the first scene in the Jedi temple.  It looks like new CGI yoda is real with details and the actors and the set are all CGI!!

So as far as the 'film-look', this movie is a shadow of what it once was.  Its not identical to AOTC or ROTS, but it looks nothing like I saw it in the theatre. it would be easier to find out what shots still retain original grain and color as opposed to whats been scrubbed and washed.

yes, its true that TPM has never looked better on home video.  and im sure apologists are going to say that DNR on TPM is ok because its at the discretion of the 'artist'.  But this is yet another piece of ever-growing evidence that lucas' sensibilities are identical to that of a suit and not the artist he likes to call himself.  I never saw patton or predator.  perhaps TPM is not as bad as those movies, but i don't think its acceptable.

so AOTC has that utterly stupid re-edit of the yoda/dooku duel and TPM now has a sterile look to it.  If I was a big enough fan of these movies, this would really disappoint me.

Talk about nightmare fuel!

Anyway, I snagged Star Wars on Ebay. Part of my continuing effort to buy the set one disc at a time, avoid the crappy disc sleeves with hideous artwork, and spite Lucasfilm. ;)

I was amazed at the level of detail in the original shots if nothing else. (All the 1997 shots stick out even more now.) I swear you can see the crew reflected in Artoo's eye and even Leia's belt buckle at times. It's no wonder our shiny droid friends are so filthy for most of the movie!

You can't appreciate how awful the CGI rocks in front of Artoo shots really are until you see it in motion. The archival commentary was enjoyable though. Carrie Fisher always has interesting things to say.

Was also interesting to hear Ralph McQuarrie talk about the SF novel cover George brought him to use as an inspiration for Chewie. Probably the one in my avatar.

George makes more odd analogies to justify changing the films. I'm sure artists tweak their paintings sometimes, but twenty years after the fact? When he talks about movies being recut and rescored by others, it's almost like he's referring to fan editors.

I've actually got the ability to watch BD now on my new computer...

I see the "Trilogy Box Sets" for $39.99 and the "Saga Box" for $89.99 at Wal-Mart.

Now IF somebody offered me the bonus disc(s) with the deleted scenes, or Episode III separately for a reasonable price, I might get 'em, but otherwise I can definitely wait.

After watching the various changes and sample vids online:

Episode I: Don't care that much. I was one of the few people who enjoyed making fun of "stoned Yoda" now one of the few enjoyable aspects is gone (even if the replacement looks decent).

Episode II: Blue tints, who needs 'em?

Episode IV: More stupid changes (even if some of the crap introduced in 2004 is partially fixed), no thanks.

Episode V: Same old crap. Don't want it.

Episode VI: Since this is my favorite of the series, I'm extra sensitive about changes to ROTJ (one of the few I liked was the 2004 cleanup of the Rancor fx)... hating the "Noooo! NOOoooOOO!"

DO NOT WANT!

Most of the changes are either stuff I never noticed before, were unnecessary or just suck. In some ways (color-wise) the OT looks improved over 2004, but remember that 2004 was a downgrade in many ways from the 1997 editions. And they haven't fixed all of the problems they introduced in 2004 (though to their credit, many of the more glaring problems have been addressed).

As for the specials, I've seen 'em all before (other than the one on the 501st and as I'm not a member, I'm not that interested).

So until they release the restored theatricals in Blu-Ray quality, color me (not blue) unimpressed. And I'm also resistant, because I had people tell me "oh, you'll complain but you'll buy it again like everyone else," which is BS! Speak for yourself, fanboy... (just a little bitter, maybe)

All I can say at this point is, thank God for fan edits/preservations/custom discs to tide us over until Lucas comes to his senses.

Side thought...I was just going through the "Sounds of Star Wars" book released last year.  Sure enough, the sound of the Krayt dragon call was indeed the blue-ray version.  Must not have listened to that particular sound back then. The book states that GL wanted to change it because originally it sounded too much like a Raider, but also because it was an off the shelf sound effect from an existing sound library.  I actually think the new effect is better...not that it excuses LF for not fixing the millions of other issues.

The famous "wilhelm" scream is an off the shelf sound effect too.

There are plenty of other ones in there, but I don't want to aid George in any more anal retentive changes to a 34 year old movie. ;)

Enjoy the green tint on FOTR ;).

Usually hate tints but the green tint is slight and only makes the movie better, IMO.

I like teal snow, too.

The green tint in FoTR is nowhere near as noticeable as the comparison videos would have you believe.

To me it was. I was annoyed the whole 3+ hours when I watched the movie. It was almost painful to watch, hopefully they remove it if they release the movie on one disc some years later.

I watched the Blu-ray version of FOTR and was not distracted by the colors. LOTR is a heavily graded movie, intentionally so, and they simply brought FOTR up to the same level of grading as its sequels. I expect the same from The Hobbit (1 & 2, natch).

I don't think that's completely true, you watched the extended version, right?   From what I understand, it wasn't bringing it up to the same level as the others so much as adding a single, constant tint throughout the entire film, on top of the pre existing color correction.  I thought I heard speculation somewhere that perhaps it was a technical error because it would be such a bizarre choice to make.  I certainly hope it won't be in the hobbit, though luckily I don't think its very likely.
