Preserving the "German" Original Trilogy (Released) — Page 9

Once more nice work, but what did you change with this re-created crawl in comparison to your first version?

And another question, what german audio track do you use for your re-creation? 2004-DVD?

Author

The old crawl was put together from the German 1997-SE crawl (a HD version of it was used for the German 2004-transfer HD broadcast). This one is made completely from scratch (and the logo was made by TK-949).

Since we're basing our German versions on Harmy's Despecialized trilogy, this clip contains just Hairy_Hen's English 5.1 audio track from Harmy's release. For our final German trilogy we're still discussing which sources to use. The German GOUT audio will probably be one of the audio options (although SW goes severely out of sync in some scenes when using the German GOUT audio... TESB and ROTJ seem to be fine though).

My recreation of the German theatrical SW crawl:

Looks very good so far. Albeit, some of the lettering in the crawl (starting at 01:00 occasionally drags some sort of color-smear behind them (probably due to encoding problems?).

On a different note: Will you guys also add the german voice actors to the end credit rolls of the movies?
(It always kind of bothers me, that they were left out).

Nice work on the crawl. It doesn't seem digital-ish at all, if that makes sense. In any case, I'll be interested in the finished product. Keep up the good work!

Really nice job. The little movements of the gate add to the realism and analogue-ity. :)

Didn't occur on my system.

I've seen that too, but I think that's just the quick encoding to avi. The finished product will be encoded more carefully.

IF we do the german credits, there will be the studio and dialogue director, but the voiceactors were not in the original credits. We could add some text sheets that features them, though.

I am not sure if the speaker infos are listed after the credits of the 2004 DVD (when playing German version). The infos about the dubbing studios are listed definitely, but I am not sure if this is also true for the German speakers.

As far as I remember, you could see the german voice talent credits in the movie theatre back then (if you stayed long enough to see it and the projectionist didn't make you leave by closing the curtain early).

However these were put there as a reel addition, so those were not included in the home video releases.

EDIT: Just got an idea. What could be done instead of expanding the official credit roll, is some sort of content for the extra disc. A photo of the voice actor with a short bio and filmography of films they voice acted in (or something along those lines).

The former version was from SW:ANH SE. It had a different "Krieg der Sterne" logo and the text was reset (by increasing space between single letters it became rather less legible).

The new version was re-done by Laserschwert based on the original German text crawl appearance from the 1977 Star Wars and the old "Krieg der Sterne" logo.

The smearing is just some encoding bug, but it's not in my work files, of course ;-)

Although I've stayed true to the theatrical crawl, two things still bother me: The logo standing still for a few frames (what a stupid mistake), and the long pause after the crawl disappearing.

I'm thinking about fixing at least the latter problem, which would be rather easy, as the crawl speeds up a bit in the end... if I keep the speed constant throughout the shot (by taking out the speedup), the text would stay on screen a little longer, thus shortening the gap of pure starfield. Fixing the logo is of course just a few clicks as well, but I guess my project partners (especially TK-949) would kill me ;-)

So, are you guys planning on doing an HD version only or an SD DVD as well?

At this point we're not really talking releases yet... First we have to get the thing together at all! (especially the audio)

Any estimates when your 1.2 of SW would be done? Ideally we would wait for that (and its improvements) before "Germanizing" it...

Well, yeah, I was hoping you would. I'm hoping to get v1.2 done in a few weeks.

Actually, that was the case in the original German textcrawl - the logo was in fact standing still on STAR WARS for a few frames. I am in favor of keeping this for nostalgic reasons.

Same is also valid for the French version: there the logo also stands still for a moment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFg6iMK3ikM

I am rather displeased that the slight warping of the image (like a really tiny pillow effect) is not there.

I know that them standing still was in the original... that's why I've copied it. But that doesn't mean I like it.

I never liked it back then, but I think it's important now. :)

I'm really sorry to say, but there is a little Tippteufel in the ESB crawl:

The title says 'Das Imperium schlägt züruck'. I assume this wasn't in the original crawl? I'm asking because the original release of episode II for example had the title 'Angrief der Klonkrieger' printed on the DVD-cover.

Anyway, these are nice crawls. What videocodec did you use for this?

Obviously you're not THAT old school a jedi, as you nick claims ;)

As you must know the original German crawl to Empire HAS that typo. Even more: I am using the actual film transfer of that crawl (the Empire crawl isn't re-created by me... only the logo and the background were replaced by me), as it was used in the German HDTV broadcasts.

And since I've tried to re-create the classic German crawls, both that typo and the "belated" German logo for SW are included in these re-creations.

Hey, not on the topic of crawls/credits/etc., out of curiosity, do any of the old pre-THX German videos feature the orange burn marks when we first see R2 and 3PO?

Yes, I think most releases before 1995 contain the burn marks.

here's the thread discussing the topic, and TServoo2049's proposed hypothesis about foreign language versions:

and pics from various releases:

If anyone can provide pics from a german version, would be much appreciated.

Nice crawls, Laserschwert. Good job on them. I don't personally speak German but it's nice to see a preservation like this is being made.

Yes, the first time I had the chance to watch ESB was when it first came out in the video rental shops on video 2000 back then. I think it was in 1982 or 1983. It was so long ago, that I cannot remember how the crawl looked.

I have several other releases on VHS but I don't have a player anymore so I cannot compare anymore.
