Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal — Page 28

I believe the mods should clear much of the evidence on this thread, since it may call undesired attention. Remember that these forums are public, and anyone without an account can read this thread.

Ignorant of many things, but still a real bro.

It is too late for that.  Now is the time to discuss things as we were asked and when trouble comes, we all figure out the way to help those who got poked.  This may not come to bad end, like all the other projects being discussed in these forums they could go ignored.  Right now the only SW issue the projects in these forums have run into was a perceived naming conflict.  Proceed with caution, set aside some pennies for a bad day, predicting future uncertain is.

I think its humorous that we're worried about this thread and the people known to each other only by screenname, but nothing has happened to Star Wars Legacy and we know his name and even that he's married to the girl from The Wonder Years. ;-)

I agree that we should try to stay as quiet as possible, yes. I think we all recognize this fact. If I am privy to information that someone wants to be kept private, I keep it private. I personally don't discuss these projects outside of this forum. But unless the mods see a need to intervene, it's up to the people involved in such projects to decide what should be discussed publicly and what shouldn't.

The mods haven't had a problem with this thread for the 5 years it's been around.

Would love to see what is going on at the -1 site. Hopefully in the future.

What an interesting thread.  I can't believe this has gone on for so long.  A testament to everyone's passion for sure.  Hopefully nobody gets in trouble.  It would be a shame.  But the hard proof is yet to be seen anyway.

Hard proof? What hard proof? :P

Hello, i have a friend of mine who has came into a 35mm print of return of the jedi SE, he has made some test scans that are misaligned and roughly done and this seems like the place to go.  It is insane to scan all the reels in and would take years if done manually , i am looking for some help on the issue.

here are some tests that are cropped and misaligned also a gif combining them () the anamorphic sqeeze is very rough )

I don't remember there being distinct matte lines like these in the SE recomposite of this shot...

After years of analysis of the SEs of ep 5 and 6, I've come to the conclusion that recomps were not done on all shots like they were for ep 4. Obviously, there are exceptions like the Rancor scene and the battle of Hoth, but I feel like in most instances, they left the original elements alone and just masked out mistakes and added in new cgi effects. You can still see garbage mattes in the space scenes in Empire (ie the asteroid belt scene) and in Jedi as well.

In my opinion, they probably felt the effects were too complicated to recomp (especially the final battle in Jedi which has over 100 different elements), and just fixed up a few things like TIE fighters flying through the falcon and called it a day.

Is this possible for motion film

Not an answer to your question, but the print your friend have seems to be the original Return of the Jedi not the SE.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

If they took a pic a couple frames after this, and the Tie matte blooper was visible on the Falcon, we'd know for sure!

Where were you in '77?

The clips in Empire of Dreams came from a source that looks more like the 97SE theatrical prints than the official video transfers, and the color timing didn't look like this. The version in the first SE trailer was still the original - it had the frame with the TIEs superimposed over the Falcon.

Here's your image (with aspect ratio adjusted):

Here's how it looks in the 97SE trailer:

And the 97SE:

Notice the matte line artifacts on the first two images, especially around the Falcon, and particularly around its radar dish. The 97SE frame doesn't have them, and also has additional motion blurring. And in the SE image, some of the elements are in different positions or aren't synched up the same way - notice the angle of the TIE right below the Falcon at frame right.

Your images look much more like the original than the SE.

Yes, I think this comparison proves it is without a doubt the original.

This is the best post I've read in a while. Very encouraging.  Just sent you a pm.  would love to check out the blog.
