Best SW score

Time to take a little break from all this sad talk about LOC, Lucas or prequels. Although we all know that music (especially in SW films) is very important, we often don't mention John Williams as a man, who was one of the key people to make OUT so great (or in my opinion, the only man, who made prequels watchable). I would even consider, if he wasn't the most important of all key people (Kurtz, Lucas, Marcia, Kasdan, Kershner). So taking all this into account, I wanted to ask you - what is the best SW score in your opinion and why?

In my opinion the best is the "Force theme" - it is sad, but it also made me happy, when I had bad days. It gave me motivation to survive all problems. Original, it was an extended and little slower version of "Binary sunset". During prequels era, various versions of this theme were made. Some parts of it were used in "Battle of the heroes", "funeral of Qui-Gon Jinn" or during the beginning of ROTS, when Obi Wan and Anakin fly above the republic cruiser.

"The Imperial March". ANH was my least favourite film in the OT for many years partially due to it's absence.

So hard to choose. IMHO even the PT are superb scores.

My instints lean towards ROTJ?

I think I have to agree with the Force Theme.

I love Dual of the fate. Too bad it makes me think about the PT. lol.

Pretty much all of ANH is gold to me.  The end titles that go from the main theme to Leia's theme is incredible.  They repeated it with ROTS even though Alderaan was in the film for about a minute!

The imperial march from ESB is probably in the top three themes of the saga (with the Main theme and force theme above it).  Its as iconic as the indiana jones theme and is now in the pop culture.

Jedi has some nice themes.  For some reason I really like Jabba's theme, which is this heavy bassoon thing that is buried in the mix but you can hear it on the cds.  Williams lifted it from E.T. (when they are going trick or treating) but it works well for the tatooine overlord.

The prequel themes are a really mixed bag.  Qui Gon got the best theme I think (all 1 minute of it heard during his first confrontation with Maul) with the romantic theme from Clones and the Anakin/Obi Wan duel also being highlights.

The PT scores are quite good in their main themes. I enjoy them nearly as much as the OT scores. There's a lot of incidental or filler music. It seems the PT scores are generally "faster-paced" especially in the action pieces vs those in the OT.

I always laugh about the AOTC love theme. It's a brilliant, melancholic, ominous piece of music but it can't save the awfulness of that movie's love story.

My personal favorite is "Into the Trap" from ROTJ. I love this build-up. Williams stacks more and more on top of the same piece of notes. Another one is the Asteroid Field from ESB which is so wonderfully dramatic and soft at the same time. Third one would be the Emperor's March. I have heard that one so often that I couldn't stand it for some time.

The funny thing is the more I think about the more excellent themes there are. Williams really did a fantastic job in making it so easy to listen to that you sometimes forget that it's a score. While some scores just don't work without the movie attached to it, Williams' scores work without any visual material. Partly this is why they are so popular. I guess.

I can't pick one.

The Original star wars is my favorite album to listen to but, I'll just list all of my favorites.

Binary Sunset, Burning Homestead, Princess Leia's theme is a big one for me, Ben Kenobi's Death, The throne room, The Asteroid Field, Han Solo and the Princess has also always stuck with me, The imperial March obviously, Yoda's Theme, Attacking a Star Destroyer, Lando's Palace, Clash of Lightsabers, The Pit of Carcoon, The entire Battle of Endor, and Victory Celebration (Nyub Nyub)

hard to say because some scores are beautiful but the best parts are not really recorded in the movies. The completed soundtracks are always better than the music recorded and edited in the movie.  I had a 20-bit skywalker sound Star Wars Trilogy CD and lost it :(

overall, I still say the opening theme.  nothing comes close in any movie I have seen.  If the Star Wars opening theme is not the greatest score in cinema history, then haven't I watched a movie that has the better score yet.

ANH just has the best collection of scores and was put to use the best way:  force theme (binary sunset), throne room medal ceremony. 'Here they come'.  even the jawa theme!  we here stories of people that were inspired to go into filmmaking because of Star Wars.  I know a few people in high school that got into orchestra music because of star wars.

ESB:  if you listen to the imperial march on the soundtrack its awesome as hell.  but i always felt the movie could have utilized it better.  you hear the theme over and over again, but its always the same first dozen or so notes.  the SE made it worse.  Yoda's theme is just moving.  the little piece with luke encountering his projection of vader in the cave is excellent. as is the scene where frozen han is being escorted thru cloud city as luke watches on.

ROTJ: the music helps this movie a lot and has best collection of scores after ANH.  Jabba's theme.  LAPTI-NEK (flame away).  the litte piece that starts as soon as yoda passes away is just beautiful. JW had to come up with something more menacing than the imperial march for palpatine and absolutely nails it! The Ewoks have their detractors but the ewoke theme and battle for endor theme is great.  Last but not least - its not in the movie, but in the closing credits, the last minute when everything comes to a cresnedo. ROTJ may be the weakest of the OT, but certainly not the score.

TPM - duel of fates is probably the only piece of PT score thats as played as any of the OT scores.  augies municipal band was great too.  trade federation music was alright.  The funeral music is a hard one because I associate it with ROTS more even though it originated here.

AOTC - the scores start to become less memorable :(  the coruscant chase did not sound anything special.  geonisis had no unique theme, neither did the droid factory.  Some reports indicate this was due to lucas not having the film ready for scoring :(  some of the incidental music, like when obi-wan is spying on dooku and when mace/obi-wan/yoda are talking at the jedi temple at the end of the movie, creates great mood.  The only full blown theme was the across the stars love theme, and its great.   I really liked the part that starts at 2:27 - but its not in the movie

ROTS: the best scores of the PT.  I like order 66, obi-wan versus anakin.  My favorite is Padme's Rumniations but in the actual movie, you cant hear it very well - also feel there should not have been the voice over.  I like grevious theme.  But there is also music that I felt misfired.  I really don't like the mustafar music. In fact, the entire sequence starting with Obi-wan arriving on tantive IV all the way thru obiwan and yoda discovering anakin killed the younglings just dind't work for me.  came off as too operatic and i don't think it was the right tone.  would have prefered the music more like pschyo or omen or shining to create a true sense of dread and horror.  just like when obi-wan says "im so sorry" and we cut to a scene of anakin all alone in mustafar.  that was pitch perfect.

still amazing how JW went above and beyond the call of duty for Star Wars and created a score that just rocketed beyond anyones wildest imagination.  The above pieces would practically be a career for any other composer, but for JW it was all in the same saga!

If I absolutely had to pick one, probably Imperial March.  I'm partial to marches.  I agree with the above that the whole piece is awesome and a bit of a shame that more of it isn't incorporated into the movies.

Other favorites are the Force theme, the Asteroid Field, and the Return of the Jedi.  Into the Trap mentioned earlier is a great one too, I think it might be the most "narrative" of the scores, practically telling you what's going on as it unfolds.

I think my favorite musical moment in the entire trilogy is the subdued "Imperial March" that plays when Vader makes his 1st entrance from the shuttle in ROTJ.

No two ways about it, the one piece of music that has always been the most moving to me is The Desert and the Robot Auction.  It instantly struck an emotional chord in me when I was 15 and it still does now.  To me, it perfectly conveys the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere on a desert planet.

My favorite stretch of music in the series in in Revenge of the Sith.  Everything from the begining to Anakins downfall through the end credits is incredible.  Especially the reprased Throne room from the end credits, sound track only sadly.

As an overall score though, I'll go with ANH.

The franchises I get nerdy about are so obscure that not even most nerds know about them.

Luke leaving Dagobah in ESB is maybe my favorite musical track of the saga. The softness of the Force Theme gets me every time, especially at 3:15. It's filled with a combination of melancholy/sadness and hope. Absolutely brilliant.

Not the worst per se, but I never liked the vocal backing to the celebration at the end of TPM. Other than that I can't think of anything. Except Jedi Rocks.

The chorus is a little weird there... but it is the Emperor's Theme in a different key/octave/tempo, so that's pretty cool.

Also, what about Lapti Nek? Better than Jedi Rocks, but...
