I'm betting this is an angle Robot Chicken will explore someday. ;)

IMO, the one overriding reason that the set can be "worth it" is for the 3 old-school documentaries on Disc 9.  The prices on the secondary market for legit versions of "The Making of Star Wars", "SP FX: The Empire Strikes Back", and especially for the Japan-only "Classic Creatures" LD together rival the cost of the BD set.

Yes, I know that almost everyone on this site has at least on LD-to-DVD transferred version of each of the documentaries (Rowman's for me) but to have a proper release is nice in itself.

How are they encoded? AVC? How high is the bitrate?

Not sure how they are encoded on the BD since i don't have it.  I do know they are from the digital video masters from the 90's, probably the self same as those used on the japan laserdiscs without the burned in subtitles of course.

These are not proper releases because not only did Lucas not go back to the negatives, he did not scan 16mm LPP prints either.  Dump to disc just like the gout.

Silverwook i read about Luca$h adding fake grain to the blu ray but i thought it was another internet myth, sigh.

It's MPEG2 encoding for the old docs. I've only watched MOSW all the way through. It's obviously an old video master, (with the 90's Fox logo at the end) but more watchable than my rotted Laserdisc at this point. Thankfully, William Conrad's narration is there.

SPFX and Classic Creatures seem to have more grain or video noise than MOSW does. Still need to dig out my LD's for a real comparison.

Where they got the different video master for Classic Creatures is anyone's guess.

Don't forget Lucas is always mining ancient mythology. Young heroes falling for slightly older women is nothing new.

He should have mined the Oedipus myth, though. It would have been juicier for Anakin to have boinked his mother.

No.

Give yourself to the weird side.

Speaking of weird: Any german BD set owners here, who can confirm that Luke's missing lines from the german dub of SW (ANH) were put back in?

Quote from Schnittberichte.com:

1:35:06

kein Zeitunterschied

Just in case of anyone wondering about this... three lines are missing from the german anh-dub (very much like the "Close the blast doors!"-thing in the original):

Leia: "They're tracking us!"
Luke: "You know what's about to happen, what they're up against?"
Luke: "Well, take care of yourself Han."

So does it really look terrible? Because I've read a few reviews that were pretty positive about the OT image quality.

I've only seen bits and pieces, but it the Greedo shoots first actually looks somewhat kinda 30% natural now. We all know that's not how it went down, but still, it seems ILM has put a ton of effort prettying up that one particular travesty.

I thought the image quality was amazing. a big step up from the DVD versions. Unfortunatly, i saw no difference in the Greedo shoots first scene.

Yes, Greedo may have shot first, but Han has shot TWICE since 1997.

I've only seen the 2004 version once. I'm probably remembering the baffling first try.

Seems like the lightsaber color issues were fixed a bit. A lot of shots are still hella contrasted out though. I guess an attempt to give things the "definition" of CGI sets?

Vader's sword still looked pink, Luke's looked white. And they had that stupid cut between the activating and deactivating the light saber in ANH when luke is using it.

I thought this would've been fixed by now.

It has been...in SW:Revisited. ;)

I was refering to the creator. But yea. That's the only way you can see them fixed.

I'll never get over the fact that an average Joe with no budget and a simple computer can go in and heavily restore the image quality of two films (and counting), add his own little effects and alterations, etc. but a billionaire with state-of-the-art computers and typewriter monkeys at his disposal can't even get lightsaber hues to match between shots.

Luca$ - and Luca$film by association - have become the posterboys for incompetence.

It's not an issue of ability - it's lack of interest.

Lucas prefers to add rocks over R2 or make Wicket's eyes blink. He knows about the color issues - he just doesn't care because people will buy the discs anyways, since...wait for it...it's SW on blu!

“Grow up. These are my Disney's movies, not yours.”

Rocks over R2? Where was that? i noticed the Wicket blinking though.

A lot of things i've never noticed. I guess he did improve the movies somewhat. There are still issues with the Lightsabers. i wonder if he got the blinking from Ady. Anyone else notice the Tuan Taun blinking, (once), also?

The Taun Taun actually always blinked, as far as I know. I thought it was a change back in 2004, but it's a good old practical effect.

Yes, people - alien creatures can be made to blink without CGI ;)

Taun Taun always blinked, actually. And most of the "improvements" done to the Blus are things that were fine before the DVDs came out.

there is a software for that.

Anyways, i just wish that the BOE was a lot more intense. i still feel its lacking fighting. Especially when you only see one SD explode before the SSD crashes.
